Great job on this! I grew up about 40 miles north of Magic Mountain and remember riding the Revolution and the Colossus when they first opened. The coaster you see behind them when they are on the Carousel was called the Mountain Express buts its long gone as with a lot of the old rides. I was 10 when this premiered on TV and couldn't wait to see it and really wanted to go to the concert they had in the parking lot at the park. The rock station KMET was giving away tickets on air. I love the movie has well and watch it every Halloween
Jesse Wray ah man, that is so awesome! I can’t imagine the anticipation back then, bring that age, and so close! So cool. My goal is to go back, and do a real location video. I have to. It’s too much fun. Haha. I live amusement parks and KISS, so a quick vacation there is a win-win. Have a great week. Thank you fir sharing your memories!
In 77' I was 3 years old. My Dad's brother, Uncle Dave, was in High School. He lived in a house on the same property as us, just separate dwellings. So I spent a lot of time out back following him around and thought he was the coolest person ever. He was awesome. Most teenagers would have told a preschooling pest to get lost. But Dave took me under his wing and exposed me to KISS, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath (I can still remember staring at the gatefold picture inside "WSOSFRR" of the woman in the coffin and being scared shitless), Led Zeppelin (who as a 5 year old I told my kindergarden teacher were overrated and were nowhere as good as KISS. Interestingly, I still feel the same.) etc. KISS, since my uncle first played 'Alive!' for me and I would stare at the booklets that came with it while listening to the record imagining a KISS concert at age 3, have been my favorite band ever. People that love KISS embrace them differently than fans of other bands. When they did the reunion in 96', I remember feeling like it was truly an act of a higher power. There's a concert clip of '100,000 Years' live in 1976 on one of their longform video releases from the late 80's early 90's that used to mezmerize me. When they played Boston Garden in 1996, I got 5th row, center floor seats. It was like time traveling back to 1977. There was fucking KISS, the original band, looking healthy, sounding amazing, bringing the best live rock experience in the history of modern civilization back 20 years later but looking and sounding exactly like they did in their prime. It really was remarkable. They played 100,00 Years and when Paul does the whole, "Do you feel rightttttttt....." with the pyro, it was like I was in the video I had watched for years. It was identical in every way and it tripped me out. Im slightly off topic here, but I understand the love for KISS minutia. When "Phantom of the Park" was released on video, I somehow got my hands on a rental in the mid to late 80's (before Exposed came out) and my Dad hooked up 2 VCR's and dubbed it in short play so it sounded and looked perfect. I used it to do a project on KISS in school and the day of my presentation there was a buzz around school this was happening. When it came time for me to present KISS, 2 other classes asked if they could watch. It was fucking awesome. It became KISS day at my middle school and everyone was loving KISS. I made 2 huge poster boards with pictures from various magazines like Circus and Metal Edge, brought my prized Paul Stanley action figure in, and gave a verbal presentation. I had written down specific times on the Phantom tape to FFWD to. I played "I stole Your Love" and "Shout it out loud" and showed the scene with the talisman. When I was done, I got a standing ovation and kids were approaching me asking me to borrow my video. Nope, you cannot borrow my rare, hard to find copy of a cult classic, sorry. My music teacher, Mr. Horan came up to me afterwards and said, "Great job Mike. I bought Alive in college and always thought KISS were underrated as musicians." That always stayed with me, my music teacher acknowledging KISS as being underrated musicians and seeing their musical chops. Enjoyed this video and I apologize for the scattered novel down memory lane. Thank you for posting!!
I love every word of this. Every last one. Thank you for sharing this. This is the kind of magic, I love hearing about. Especially the school project! How awesome! This was perfect! Great way to start off a weekend. Take care!
Thank you!! Your response just made my weekend!! Your channel is awesome!! Your unwavering, uncompromising dedication to KISS is like finding someone who finally speaks my brethren language. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you for writing such a kind response to me. PS...off topic again, but, how incredible was Tom Morello's speech when he inducted them!? Goosebumps!! I felt like a proud family member. Have a great weekend, talk soon.
@@madmichaelmathieu Thank you again for the kind words. I still very much feel that spark of fun, I felt when I was 14, discovering this whole thing (Phantom was a catalyst). Glad to meet and talk to someone who 'gets it'. Take care.
I wish it were better (like actual film footage), but back when I took the trip flip phones and digital cameras were all we had LOL. Seems like prehistoric times. Haha. Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
@@ItsAllForYouDemon totally understand... I’ve got regrets like that about a lot of things. I was fortunate enough to work the Farewell Tour in 2000 as local crew. I really wish I would’ve had an iPhone for that. I was there unloading trucks, pushing the stage into position & backstage with everyone. Not one picture from that day. One day of like to try to get out to CA & see what remains from KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park. I know theme parks are in a constant state of change.
Saw it on TV with my dad in '78 bought my copy from a discount bin at Walmart back in 1988. Pure Hanna-Barbera cheesy nostalgia Thanks for sharing your memories and photos. BTW, audio is weak after Radioactive, had to crank up volume to hear ya
Thanks for your video! Today, 10-28-20, is the 42nd year of the movie's release on tv back in the day!!! I remember watching it when I was 12 years old. There were no VCR tapes of concerts at that time and the only way you could see them was in concert or on live tv, news etc. . I was in awe when I saw the movie. It's one of my favorites!! Thanks again!!
This movie is what made 8-year-old me a lifelong KISS fan when it first aired all those years ago. I still remember after it was over, I started drawing pictures of the band members' faces. The makeup and superhero persona they made for them in the movie sent my 8 year old mind running wild and wanting more. It was a great time to be alive and a KISS fan.
@@ItsAllForYouDemon I also remember a year later when my older brother (who also became a fan after seeing the movie) bought the DYNASTY album, and both of us being fans of disco really enjoyed the album. My brother (who unfortunately passed away this past January at the age of 58) must have played I Was Made Fo Loving You a million times. LOL I miss those days when you didn't know what new thing KISS was going to do next. We were also huge fans of Music From The Elder. You take care as well buddy. I love your channel!
Daniel Preece agree. It’s so much fun. I have a fun bit of merch coming soon, and a new vlog about my days renting this from the video store. Thanks for watching. Have a good week!
Awesome video! I absolutely love, love, love this movie. I saw it the day it came out. I was surprised my mother let me stay up to watch it. I grew up in CA; however, I never went to Magic Mountain primarily because it was in southern CA and I grew up in Northern CA and we just didn’t travel that much back then, if at all. Cool that were you able to visit the park. Good stuff Ric. I really appreciate you putting this together. -Nick
Thank you for the kind words. I was just on a Columbo binge one day (I'm a very old soul....Murder She Wrote, Matlock, Columbo....that's TV viewing for me LOL), and I was like...."Holy crap!" That's pretty fun. Shame that place has been completely bulldozed. Would have been a cool spot to still find today. Totally agree with you....PHANTOM (especially during the Summer), is what it's all about!! Take care
That's absolutely awesome! I can't even begin to imagine the impact that would have back then. Such cool memories. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week!
Thank you. Need to do one “all proper”, to quote Clockwork Orange LOL. But wanted to show old pics from our trip Pre-smart phone. Haha. Have a great week!
I've always wondered that as well. I guess looking at the "Lobby Cards" from when it played in theaters over seas, that pic was a highly used one, and most pics of all four members are live shots? (Minus the chairs or fight scenes)? Just guesses? Great point, and fun to think about! Take care.
The mansion used in the film, now long gone was also featured in 'The Rookie' with Clint Eastwood, and Charlie Sheen. Also in an episode of 'The Six Million Dollar Man'.
Dude this is pretty cool!! Yeah I remember it like yesterday when the movie was gonna be aired and know exactly where I was at that night with my family I was only 4 years old. It was also reaired later when VCR home units came out and still have the VHS I recorded it. Hilarious I totally always said the same about the vendor looking into the camera 😂😂 KISSARMYFORLIFE 🤘🏽🤘🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I've always been infatuated with Magic Mountain ever since the making of KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM! I wish that I had went to that KONCERT! I took my two teenage kids back in August of 2018. We we're riding the New Twisted Colossus! While on the ride I was trying estimate the location as to where the KISS KONCERT was taking place!
Oh yes, I'm totally agree. I tend to look at any amusement park as containing a little 'Phantom' magic LOL. But Magic Mountain itself, is pure magic. I have to get back there again, and do a proper location find. So much fun. Thanks for watching and commenting. I love to hear peoples thoughts on the movie and how it has impacted them. Thanks for sharing. Very cool to be united by a fandom for (not only KISS), but this movie as well. Pure magic. Take care man.
Demon Dude, you should call these early videos your 'BTD period'. BTD being 'Before The Dogs'. To be honest the '78 KISS TV movie was truly cheesy in its storyline for my 15 year old self as it played more like an original Scooby Doo episode. Yet it was the mesmerizing combination of KISS, an amusement park and the evil scientist in Anthony Zerbe (the Omega Man) which lured me in. I've never seen the European version 'Attack of the Phantoms' and I'm told it has solo album music in the soundtrack. Oddly my first trip to Canada's Wonderland the year it opened was the same day (June '81) KISS Meets the Phantom was replayed on American network TV. The father of the girl I took to the park said he would record it for me on his Sears Betacord video tape deck.
I've always wondered where Deborah's been all these years. It seems like she hasn't made an appearance since the late 70s. I figured at one point she'd maybe show up at a Kiss Convention or something but at 70 years old, that seems less and less likely these days.
Watched it on tv as a kid. Loved it. Have it on vhs also. KISS #1
