David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer, Numbers) joins us this week to candidly share his experience overcoming thyroid cancer, the difficulties surrounding this disease while working in Hollywood, and how it was preceded by a nine month panic attack. Later, David talks about the validation he received from Christopher Nolan after landing a prominent role in Oppenheimer, his humbling first day on set, and a crazy story of how auditioning for this part evidently led to him becoming sober. We also talk The Santa Clause, pivoting on Numbers, and a horror story of a honeymoon.

Met Robin Williams while working in a comic book shop. He wanted to open an anime artbook and I told him I need to ask the front counter. He threw his arm around me and said "then lets go ask!". I asked my co-worker and her only response was "Dude...that's Robin Williams, he can open whatever he wants." and Robin proceeded to shake me a bit and say "LAY OFF THE GUY HE'S JUST DOING HIS JOB!". This was a year before he passed. Wonderful experience.

I met Jack Black in the Starbucks across from my apartment here in Atlanta. He was so friendly and happy to chat, and the minute I mentioned that I followed his UA-cam channel, he didn't want to talk about anything else BUT video games. After that, he asked me to recommend him games to play, and before he left with his coffee, we took a photo together. Dude was an absolute delight.

I was at LAX waiting to pick up a friend once when Kiefer Sutherland walked into the terminal. He saw that I recognized him but I didn't want to bother him so i just smiled, pointed at him, and nodded my head to acknowledge him. To my surprise, he came over and shook my hand and talked to me for like 10 minutes before going to his gate. By far the best encounter I've had with a celebrity

I met Kiefer and got a photo with him a few years back. He was in the corner of a local dive bar in my town, and was probably a little drunk, so I’m not sure how much that had to do with his kindness… but he was super nice. He saw me hovering around the 3-4 people he was talking to and acknowledged me, invited me into the circle basically as he finished his story. Then when he was done I told him I didn’t want to bother him but just wanted to say I was a fan of his work, and he left the group he was talking to and spoke to me solo for like 5mins. He asked me what my favorite film of his was and seemed genuinely interested haha. We spoke about Stand By Me and Dark City (he told me those were his two most personal / meaningful films he had done) and then he took a photo with me and my then girlfriend. I let him go after that and we hung out around the bar drinking and an hour or so later as he was escorted out a back entrance by his security, as he walked past me he literally stopped, reached out his hand to shake mine and said “it was a genuine pleasure,” then left the bar out the back. It was crazy. I think he’s probably so used to people only recognizing him as Jack Bauer that a younger guy geeking out about Dark City stood out to him, but who knows. Either way he was really cool towards me.
Oh and I also offered to buy him a shot and he almost said yes but then told me they had a tab open already and he didn’t want me to spend my money. Class act haha. He was in town with his country band and they had played a show earlier that night.

I was working film security overnight in Toronto as a shy teenager. Standing around in a vest by a barrier in cold and wet. John Ritter went walking by and noticed me on his way in, stopped and chatted. 30 min later he came out and brought me a chair and an umbrella. An hour later came out and brought me a hot chocolate and a sandwich and was telling me and a cute girl I was working with hilarious jokes and stories and started asking us both all about ourselves and started talking us both up to one another and suggested we should go on a date since we were both single and nice kids.
I never would have asked, but she said told John she’d say yes if I asked so I did. We went out a few times and had fun, but it didn’t really go anywhere, but what an amazing story it would have made if we ended up together!

I met Eddie Van Halen back in the early 90s. He was fueling up his Lambo at the gas pump across from me. I immediately recognized him (he still had long hair), and was wearing sunglasses looking like the ultimate Rock Star. I completely froze and he waved at me, I waved back. He then hangs up his gas pump and waves me over. I cannot believe it and he waves me over again, so I walk over to him, shaking I extend my hand and he grabs my hand and pulls.me toward him like if he knew me LOL!!! He then says ... "You look like you like to rock, want some guitar picks?" I said "YES SIR. I SURE DO!", and he reaches into his tote bag and HANDS ME 3 BLACK AND GOLD VAN HALEN GUITAR PICKS. !!!
I still have them. All 3 are black with VH Logo in Gold with Eddie's Signature and the letters f.u.c.k inside of his signature. On the back side, it has F.U.C.K stamped on it in capital lettets. It was their "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" Tour. He spoke with me for a while and almost lit up a cigarette right next to the gas pump and caught himself and said "Oops, oh shit, bad idea next to all these gas fumes." We laughed. He asked where I was from and he said he was going home to get ready to go Golfing. I will never forget that day. It broke my heart when he passed away. For me it was Danny Trejo. I was working at a Comic-Con in South Texas back in 2014 and he was on a panel for something, I forget what it was. I was in a backroom taking a break and eating while watching a Game show on a TV when he came walking in asking if it was OK to take a breather. Dude was super chill, like I was talking to one of my uncles. he asked me about what I did for fun and about his family. Dude is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet despite his rough appearance. Even after that he spotted me as he was walking by out of the hotel that the con was in and gave me a high-five. And him and me, we both grew up with Desperado and Vice City. So the man with the big cojones, Danny Trejo, walks in his store, cause he was shooting a movie in town. I have a gig the same day.
My best friend invites Danny Trejo to my gig at a local pub. Danny Trejo says he would love to, but he has a very busy schedule because of the movie and writes on an A4 piece of paper "Dennis, Thank You! - Danny Trejo Machete"

Then someone else went up to him and said he was an aspiring actor. Bill invited him to sit down and they had a full thirty minute conversation where he gave him acting advice. Made me realize he was incredibly nice and generous. Then someone else asked for a picture, which he was happy to do, then I finally asked him for a picture and told him how much I liked About Time. I met Chris Reeve twice during the summers of 1984 and ‘85 while he was appearing at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts. During our first encounter, he signed my lottery ticket that I had purchased that morning ( I still have it!). He was the kindest celebrity I had ever met. He was smart, charming, and very giving of his time spent with fans. The following summer I met him again after a thunderstorm cut the power during the end of the first act of the play. Theater management made the announcement that refunds would be available at the box office. As my girlfriend and I were college students at the time, we opted to wait at the box office with about 12 other people. Most patrons had left and I was so glad to have stayed behind. A side door in the lobby opened and who stepped through- STILL in his theater wardrobe was Chris Reeve. He approached our small group and APOLOGIZED to us for not having the chance to see the entire show! He was absolutely wonderful. Spoke to each of us for a few minutes, then bid us a good evening. @mznxbcv12345 yes, he didn't give strange children that he didn't know, food. One of them could have been allergic. Most, if not all parents, don't want strangers giving their kids food, either. Just because the 5 year old wants some doesn't mean that the correct response is to give it to them. He was then forced to parent De Niro's kids because they're hanging around the elevator, and he did what he considered to be the right move as a 21 year old with limited experience with children. De Niro wasn't "tactful", he walked away because he was sorta called out for being a shitty parent that just left his kids outside to harass people trying to use the elevator. No idea how any of this is indicative of Krumholtz's character. What I do know is the experience I had when I met him. 🤷‍♂️

Robin was the coolest person out of everyone on set. Nobody was nicer to everyone than him. And I mean everyone.
During breaks in shooting he would entertain the extras, even strangers walking by - he was so kind and funny and would make everybody laugh and had unlimited energy. He left you smiling. My favorite photo that I have from that week is one where we were posing with the girl lead in the film, for just an on set photo, and guess who ran up behind us and photobombed us - Robin Williams - and he was right behind me in the photo, copying me with a peace sign just like I was doing. His two body guards sat right across a tight aisle from our group, so we were talking with them while people started to recognize J with his managers at another table. (Funny thing is, they said how people would assume they were like ghetto thugs, but they were Div 1 football players with college degrees...) Time starts to go by and J is beset by autograph seekers, literally people handing him babies while he was trying to eat, the restaurant staff started coming out to meet him- and he could not have been nicer or more accommodating to all of them while trying to eat. But our table left him alone.. He was floored that this 20-something kid with a flat bill hat would reference anything other than LOTR. I was an extra on the movie Chaos walking with Daisy Riddley, Tom Holland and Madds Mickelsen and we had orders not to talk to them.
I remember at the cantina Madds was standing behind me waiting for his lunch and talked to him and I even let him pass in front of me.
For the remaining of the shooting each time Madds was seeing me he was always saluting and have a small talk with me.

James Caan had a vacation home in the area. We were both pumping gas and he asked me if I knew about cars. Given the broken down wrecks I drove in college, I said yes. He asked me about noise from the front brakes as he was driving a friend's mini van. I told him it could be the wear sensors or could be dust from driving on gravel roads. A quick car wash should eliminate that, if not time for the shop.I explained the mechanics behind the sensors and how they worked. He thanked me said I was a very nice young man. I knew he looked familiar and I recognized the voice but could not place it. Only when I went in to pay did the station owners, father and son, tell me who he was. Even more curious is that their first and last names were the same as mine. Rod Serling must have been somewhere near by.... ;-)

Mine was in 2007, Mark Hoppus from Blink-182. At the time Him and Travis where in a band called +44 and they were on the Honda Civic Tour with Fall Out Boy. I had just graduated Highschool, stuck with no one to go to the concert with because me and my gf broke up because I graduated and she was a year younger and blah blah. So I'm there at the show alone because most of my friends at that time were only in to rap, I get to my seat and a beer gets spilled on me during Cobra Starship's set. Great. After +44's set I went outside to chill out and eat a hot dog while they set up for FOB. I notice the area was right next to the band's buses. I see Travis Barker walk out and I ask him to sign my CD booklet but he either ignored me or didn't hear. Mark and the rest of the band walk out at that moment and saw. Mark says "he's tired he had 2 sets" (his side project Expensive Taste also played) they sign my CD booklet and we talk about graduating an my breakup, art and junk food for like 10 minutes. Some other people show up for autographs and he tells me to wait while he signs some people's things. Comes back and asks for my CD booklet, runs inside Travis's bus and runs back out with it signed. Also gave me some guitar picks. Mark Hoppus is the NICEST most genuine famous person I've ever met. Great guy, the +44 guys where chill as hell too.

DeNiro moves at a different pace than a lot of celebrities. Years ago he was filming This Boys Life in Vancouver and a major location was in a forest area where cast and crew had to pass through this narrow road and gate to the park parking lot. It was in the winter and the rain was in hard and for the production assistant at the gate, it was a pretty miserable daily gig. Anyway, one week of filming comes to and end and everyone breaks for the weekend. They come back Monday morning and lo and behold, a little wooden shelter is now beside the gate. DeNiro had seen the production assistant in the rain in each day and felt bad for them. He organized and paid for the shelter to be built for them. That shelter was there for many, many years and was always known by film folks as DeNiro's shack.

I would imagine the film set persona for actors is very different from their normal personality. From what I understand, Anthony Hopkins never spoke to Jodie Foster on Silence of the Lambs but from what I’ve heard he’s a nice guy.

We have TONS of stories about De-Niro being cold etc, so i'm not going to make any excuses for him. Some of his movies are great, but that doesn't mean he's a good person. To be honest he seems like a dick in a lot of the interviews he does.

Well, I have to say… “I’m gonna take the stairs” it’s a WAY better, cooler and “De Niro-ish” response to your joke than an awkward laugh and a “no problem, let’s take the elevator together”. For God’s sake, he gave you the “Meet the parents” treatment! 😂

This story is a bit confusing to me.
DeNiro held a grudge because someone wouldn't give his sons pizza?

I saw Bruce Willis with his wife and kids at Century City in LA about six or seven years ago. As he passed me I said "Hey man, big fan". He just looked straight ahead and said in monotone "Thanks" and kept going. I guess he just didn't feel like being social that day.

I met my hero once. I won't say who it was, but he was a very famous actor. I'll never forget what he said to me. He said, 'hey you! Get out of my trash can'! It was magical.

I absolutely loved David's role in The Newsroom. It wasn't a big role, but the way he played the character of Will's psychiatrist made him so memorable in that show.

I met David in 07 when I newly moved to LA. Couldn’t have been a nicer dude! Worked at a shop he was a regular at and surprisingly made small talk with me. What stood out to me was how genuine he was being. Funny coincidence to chance upon this interview. Cheers David!

I have a cousin who used to work as Alec Baldwin's personal assistant. One day, she was home visiting my aunt and uncle in Ohio when the phone rang. My uncle answered and it was a man asking for my cousin. My uncle asked who was calling and the man said "Steve." My uncle handed the phone to my cousin, who spoke very comfortably with the man for a few minutes, and then hung up the phone. My uncle asked her who that was. She said, "Dad, that was Steve Martin."

Like, where did Steve Martin come from in the story? Why was Ohio mentioned (it’s like a red herring that distracts my brain and throws it off of the main trail)? And why doesn’t Alec Baldwin come back up!

    • @caelachyt
      @caelachyt 7 місяців тому

Martin being unassuming by identifying himself simply as Steve, and being a comfortable conversation for the cousin, seems the focus of the story. The Ohio reference is inconsequential background info. Baldwin doesn't come back up because he is only mentioned for context, helping explain why the cousin was acquainted with Martin so that he would call them. You are probably one of just a few who found this nonsensical. @@college54114
