    BONUS "DO" OF REPORT WRITING: I meant to include this one in the video and somehow lost half the clip, so here it is: DO...brag about your child! Your report is the chance to really big up your child and their achievements, so don't be afraid to do so!

    As always, I recommend the H.E.F.A Facebook group for all things report writing. Just by following their guides, I got the thumbs up from the LA on the first attempt. I also used their report-checking service (it's completely amazing that admins give up their time to do this for FREE) but I didn't require any changes (because I followed the guides). Honestly, couldn't have done it without that group (sound like I'm accepting an oscar over here 😂)

    Thank you so much for this video. Just starting to write my daughters first report and I had all her learning documented but did not know how to show her progress. The structure you gave to evidence progress has helped me so so much. Can not thank you enough!

    Brilliant video Cathryn. This is really helpful. Report writing has been my biggest fear when it comes to beginning my son’s Home Education. This really puts my mind at ease though. Thank you so much for the video and I love how you included us veggies (the tofu of the video gave me a good chuckle) 😂❤

    Mine was super easy: basically I just mentioned what activities we do outside the home and what we do to cover each subject including book/curriculum name if I have some. My LA contact has been lovely and encouraging.

    Great video! I really like the point you made about finding out what level of reporting the LA in your area are happy with. I can see how offering too much can cause expectations to creep higher and higher, making things harder for others. It’s so important to know our rights and to let the LA also know that you know. In my area they are pretty good, but their standard form does seem to ask a lot of questions that are not required by the actual guidance/law. That’s why I prefer to do my own forms too.

      Thank you Jenni. Thank goodness I've got that one done 😆. That's great you live in a pretty chilled area; ours aren't too bad all things considered (from what I've read of other areas!).

    Such a good video! It can be such a gnarly subject (different LAs trying to define evidence differently for example). I home Ed my son for his secondary years and then some years later worked for an LA as a home Ed officer. It was a genuinely good LA at that point, and we were there to assist and advise (if needed) and our understanding of home Ed was full and accepting of all styles of HE, from formal to radical unschooling. Sadly it didn’t stay the same for my role, so I left but for a time it was a lovely job and I feel I’ve seen HE from both sides!

      Ohhh that’s so interesting. Thanks for sharing. I think it would be great if all LAs who had someone with actual experience of home educating and knowledge of all the different styles. It’s so hard when all the different LAs have different interpretations of the guidelines!

      @@nurturingdiscontent yes, there were two of us with home Ed experience in the department. It was always so wonderful to visit or speak with people who clearly thought we would not understand an informal education, and then to be able to compliment them and tell them they were doing great! Favourite part of the job by far. You could practically see the stress leave people!

    Thank you so much for making this video. I am actually excited to put my first report together 🤗 Question- how many examples of progression would you suggest per 'subject' area? Thanks x

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  2 місяці тому +1

      Wow, excitement for a report; that has exceeded my goal of just reducing the anxiety of report writing.😀 Good for you! I would say a couple of examples per area should be enough. Remember to read up on your local LA and get a vibe for how strict or relaxed they may be, which may give you more of an indicator. I don't think I used any more than 1-2 examples.

      It is usually advised not to invite the LA into your home, and while it's worked for some it's also backfired for a lot of people (such as them appearing lovely and helpful and then writing to say your education isn't sufficient). They have no right to be in your home, and see your children or your work. It's always best to keep things in writing so you have a paper trail. There is a really good post on H.E.F.A going into the reasons more, if you're on that group. But, indeed, each to their own. It's up to the individual to choose who they want in their home. 💕
