    Totally different situation for me. My daughter loves school but I'm not happy with the rubbish they are learning. I desperately miss spending time with her during the day and I want more freedom in our lives. Finances holds me back, and as I'm a single mum I'm not sure how to balance homeschooling. I'm determined to get her out of school soon. Thank you for a great video ❤

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  7 місяців тому +3

      Ahh that is a really nuanced situation. I guess the fact that your daughter loves school at least buys you time to get everything figured out. Finances is a big one, indeed. We really rely (too much) on my Husband's income, but I do hear of a lot of single parents who make home ed work. Facebook groups would be a good place to connect with other single parent home ed families and get different ideas of how they make it work. Best wishes to you and your daughter 💟

    I love hearing “do nothing” when it comes to parenting! How rare 😂
    We are in the do nothing position. I had a feeling home education was a good idea, but now I feel like it’s the elevated path, so to speak. And the default - how wonderful! I wish more people viewed a child being with their parents as default… or maybe even good!
    😁

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  8 місяців тому

      😆 I hadn't thought about it like that, but you're right - it is rare, and sometimes the best method! It's a bit sad isn't it how normalised it is for kids to leave their parents so young now, even though I know it's a necessity for some! How old is your child at the moment? Are they coming up to compulsory school age?

    • @zoem1859
      @zoem1859 8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, 1 & 3. Already had a lot of attention regarding the fact they haven’t been and won’t go to nursery. There has already been comments to my eldest “Oh! You’ll be starting reception soon!” Neither of us being any the wiser as to what reception was (I’m from NIreland and we didn’t have reception in my toddlerhood!)
      One person kept saying “I can see him at school” when I said I wanted to home educate. I was like “good for you, I can’t” (in my head) 😂
      There was a recent article in the German news (we are a mixed family) about how nurseries should be better preparing children for the workforce. WHAT?!? 😅

      Welcome! Thanks for being here! I can understand it's overwhelming. Do you think there is anything in particular that is concerning you? I presume your 7 year old is already in school? With regard to your 3 yr old, just keep doing whatever you do now, nothing needs to change for them right now unless you particularly want it to. Feel free to ask any extra questions you have!

      @@nurturingdiscontent my 3 year old is amazing and I'm confident that he lives a full and happy life and is constantly learning but I haven't been happy with my daughters school since day 1 really and have never quite had the confidence to remove her . We are hoping to gather lots of info and deregister her when she finishes for the summer in July and start afresh with them both from Sept. I'm just worried I won't be able to forfil her needs as a 7 year old as it seems abit more daunting then for my younger child.

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  7 місяців тому

      Sounds like a good plan to finish at summer to give yourself time to get your head around everything if your daughter is happy to keep going until then. If your 3 year old leads a fulfilled happy life then there is absolutely NO reason why your 7 year old won't be the same. She can still do so much learning through play and living everyday life with you, attending home ed meet-ups etc. If you want to take a more structured approach to learning there are plenty of resources out there too, and may even be tutoring groups in your area. Here's hoping she already has a foundation of the basics from school, which you can expand on. Then let her explore her interests and see where you go from there. Think of yourself as her facilitator rather than teacher and it will seem less daunting. But don't get me wrong, there will of course be time where you doubt your decisions and feel like you're failing your child. We all go through that and it's good to know it's going to happen ahead of time 😊

    I am nearly at my year for my GCSEs however I want to be home schooled as I feel that a lot of time is wasted in school and that I can do more at home but it is quite confusing what exactly I should do when picking subjects and how the home schooling system actually works.

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  Місяць тому

      Hey Mathew thanks for watching. Hope school is going well. Doing GCSEs as a home educated student it absolutely possible, and many children do them this way, but any GCSEs taken have to be self-funded. My children are still young so I don't have too much knowledge on GCSEs in this respect I'm afraid. You could take a look at the @yesyoucanhomeeducate channel as she has children who have sat GCSEs, or I would receommend joining local or national home ed facebook groups to find out more. There is also a good book called Expectations vs Reality: The Home Ed Guide You Didn't Know You Needed which goes into a lot of details of Home Ed in the UK. Wish you all the best whatever route you take!

    This video was needed! I'm intending to home educate my 3 year old and her nursery teacher has been discussing the option of flex-schooling (which works great for some families) and I guess I've been feeling a bit wobbly about my decision to HE. But the advice about attending meet ups leading up to HE has given me a bit of confidence back

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  8 місяців тому +1

      So pleased that it's been helpful to you! It's great you're able to start looking at home ed so early. I've found most home edders at meet-ups are super welcoming to parents whose children are below school age and happy to share experiences. You might even find in your area there are a few home ed parents with kids a similar age and going through the same wobbles that would like to get together. I hate to say, I'm not sure those wobbles ever go away but maybe you just learn to process them better 😄
      There is also a FB group called "Home Education as First Choice Education" you might like to join for people with a child under 5 not in school. Wishing you all the best over the next few years, and thanks for being here!

      Hello, sorry your son has had such a bad experience at school! Obviously there is a lot more to it and individual circumstances, but your first step will be to deregister him from the school by sending a deregistration letter/email. I have no personal experience of this as my children have never been to school, so I highly recommend joining Home Education For All (H.E.F.A) UK facebook group as they have templates available for you to use. Once you have sent in the instruction to deregister he no longer needs to attend and your Home Education journey can begin!

    Great video. Thinking of putting my 2 year old in nursery for a morning a week, so if he goes to nursery, can I still not tell the LA when he gets to CSA? Never wanted or planned on him going to school. And would you still recommend de-schooling after nursery? Thanks 😊

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  5 місяців тому

      It’s not your job to tell the LA that he’s not going to school after nursery but you may find it’s passed on from the nursery. I think that’s what happened with us for my twins. They can find out other ways too though, so I wouldn’t let that influence your decision too much if you think nursery would be good otherwise (which it absolutely can be!). Always recommend deschooling for the adult if you went to school, to change our expectations of what “real learning” looks like. Whether your son needs it would depend how school-like the nursery setting is I suppose. Hope that helps a bit. It’s great he is only two and you are getting ahead of things 😊 it wasn’t even on my radar when my twins were that age

  • @Sophie.Punter
    @Sophie.Punter 7 місяців тому

    Why is it you wouldn't inform your LA about homeschooling? My council website says its not compulsory but recommended to I form them. Could this actually be problematic?

    • @nurturingdiscontent
      @nurturingdiscontent  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey, it's a great question, thanks for asking. Firstly, there is no legal requirement for you to inform them. If you are deregistering that's the schools responsibility, and if your child has never been to school, well, also you don't have to. Whether it's problematic sort of depends on what your LA is like, and your personal views really. There are LA's that will pretty much leave you to it and just ask for an annual report on your child's progression, but there are also LA's that really overstep their remit and try to ask for all sorts of things that they aren't entitled to (like home visits, speaking directly to you child, asking for samples of work etc) and can be hard to satisfy. It's worth asking on your local home ed facebook group what your local LA is like if you don't know already. I can also really recommend the book *Reality vs Expectation: The Home Ed Guide You Didn't Know You Needed* by Elen Morrigan, that has a great chapter about local authorities. Are you currently home educating or thinking about it?

      So sorry to hear your daughter is going through this and the school isn't doing anything. That's completely unacceptable for your family. As to how much it will cost, it's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' scenario, and will vary from family to family. You can absolutely Home Ed on little to no budget, it's really up to you how much you would want to spend and there is SO much out there for free. The biggest impact financially is usually if one caregiver has to give up or reduce their working hours and whether you can get by on 1 salary. Please let me know if there is anything else I can answer to help your decision, and don't hesitate to join the big FB groups for advice before you officially are home educating; everyone is very friendly. @nurturingdiscontent  7 місяців тому

      Hey there. Sorry I'm not 100% familiar with what trust schools are, so don't want to give you any wrong advice. Does your child have SEN? As far as I know the only time you need approval for home ed is when your child is in a special school. I can highly recommend asking on the H.E.F.A facebook group, because there are loads of amazing admins there. I know it's hard not to panic when someone at a school with supposed "authority" is telling you these things, but in a lot of cases, schools don't know the correct procedure to follow. Again, if your child isn't in a special school you don't have to provide plans. If you haven't already, join H.E.F.A facebook group and ask there, I'm sure one of the admins will be able to put your mind at rest. Best wishes to you. Keep us posted how you get on 💟

      @@shakubhat650 hiya, it should just be a case of ticking that you agree to read the guides etc, no? And answering the questions. I wasn't aware of a password. Is it asking you to enter a password?
