  • Can you write on, stamp or otherwise mark up a 2 dollar bill? How about other currency, like one dollar bills or twenty dollar bills? Learn what you can and can't do to your cash money with insight from a former Treasury employee as well as ben cohen of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, who stamps them in his traveling mission against money in politics. Will the government come get you if you mark up your banknotes and make them illegal tender? In today's economy, find out if there's worry about this numismatics issue. The federal reserve knows.

    It's hard to imagine that anyone would want to mark up such a pretty two-dollar bill. But, then again, people
    deface many things in life in the interest of "art"! An individual choice, but I won't accept a funked-up $2 bill.
    Just a personal preference.

    I use two dollar bills to buy stuff, in fact the 1928 two dollar bills had its corners ripped to avoid confusion of other denominations. A couple of weeks ago, Burger King inside Walmart in Brownwood,TX “checked” the two’s I used with counterfeit markers! Even the manager wasn’t sure they were real! My understanding is when those marked bills go back to the bank, they are sent to the treasury to be destroyed. I very seldom see any marks bills now in circulation. Have not seen a "Where's George" in quite awhile. Plus where are all those Clemson $2 bills?

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary

      You are 100% correct. Bills that are marked up will almost always get sent back to the Fed for destruction. I originally included a few lines about that toward the end of the video, but it seemed to make the video lag for too long, and I cut it. The point was to explain the rules without getting into what happens after. Thanks for the great comment.

    Can you find a two dollar bill at any foreign country

  • @furonwarrior
    @furonwarrior 2 роки тому

    It is illegal because it would remove it from circulation. Think accounting. If money goes missing, the book becomes unbalanced or unaccounted for. Technically, destroying bills would physically deflate currency. If you have $100 and destroy $10. That $90 that you have suddenly becomes worth more in value, but less than what you’ve originally had.

    I’ve been struggling with the idea of money for a few years, and I’ve been able to conclude that the monetary systems of this world will not cease until they have destroyed every human being. That’s unless we can reveal money for what it really is: paper.
    Money was originally a commodity, meaning it had value in itself (gold, silver, shells, etc. ), but as travel and bartering progressed, paper money was commissioned as a representative money. This money gained its value from the commodity it represented. Therefore, this paper money became a symbol for value. If you are not familiar with linguistics or semiotics, it is important to know that a symbol can be attached to several different connotations, which can compromise human beings’ perspectives, motivations, and behavior depending on how they communicate with this symbol or how the symbol is communicated to them.
    In 1971, Richard Nixon, through several economic measures, revealed that US currency was in fact fiat currency, meaning it was not backed by a commodity. For years, Americans were lead to believe that the dollar was backed by gold, meaning money had real value (although I never really understood why shiny rocks held so much value either. I suppose all paths lead back to the main economic tool of profit, scarcity). No Gold Standard meant no real value, leaving us with bank vaults, wallets, and mattresses full of paper.
    So if the US dollar, along with most world currencies, didn’t have any value then what’s the point? First, let’s remember that paper money is a symbol, a symbol which originally had the connotation of “commodity” attached to it, but like all symbols, it can have several connotations attached to it. With the paper dollar’s original connotation stripped away, we are left with the predicament of the symbol: the symbol had been compromised, so with no real commodity value, money has become a tool used to manipulate human perspective, motivation, and behavior.
    It’s not real.
    The most powerful people in this world aren’t rich because they have money; it’s because they have the power to control money, and with this power, they use money as a tool to control human energy for their own benefit. Money merely shadows the currents of human energy, but that energy is there regardless of money. Humans need to wake up and realize that every creation, good or bad, has been done with human hands, and we can continue to progress, innovate, and improve the quality of the human existence with our energy, independent from the compromised and corrupted symbol systems of money.
    “But we need money; how will thing’s get done?”
    To those asking this question, I pose you this counter question: What really needs to “get done”, and what is money’s role in this?
    So what does need to get done. My answer: end the wars, stop poverty, save the environment, cure diseases, end racism, end classism, end sexism, educate our children, find clean energy, stop crime, end the prison industrial system, stop (real) drug abuse, etc.
    When I look at this list of problems, I realize that all paths lead back to money. Money compromises the human existence. Money feels no human emotion. It forces us to fend for ourselves, turning us against one another. It feels no love. It feels no pain, fear, or hate, but it creates it. “Tough” business decisions may lead to a loss of jobs, foreclosed homes, or even a war, but business, markets, and money have no conscience towards the domino effect of anguish that they push into motion.
    So, here’s my call to action: WRITE ON MONEY. Use pens, Sharpees, paint, whatever. Send it into circulation. Be creative, funny, political, enlightening, optimistic, informative, but most importantly help those who communicate with it realize that it’s only paper. Once that idea is made clear, we can begin taking exponentially faster steps towards a more relishable human existence.
    Please Submit your bills to the blog for posting, and make sure to write the website on the back of your bills to direct others on how this project works. Or start your own write on money campaign. Either way, write on money!

Heck, why not bring in one-third of the bill three times and get THREE bills for it? I would think you have to have at least half of the bill to get it replaced. If you want to write on your own money that no one will see, I'm sure it's fine. Similarly, if you defaced a $5 bill in front of a policeman, you would not be hauled off to jail. But generally, the "law" is that you can't deface U.S. currency. It probably applies to large bills in mass quantities and the ramification of taking a large amount of currency out of circulation.

      Try a local coin & currency dealer. If your bills are in good condition and are actually old (and not, like, 1995 or even 1976), you may have something. Not as sure about the coins. You can try eBay - look up similar bills and see what they go for. Then either sell them there or as I said, find someone local who has a coin & currency shop. They'd take them if they were good items.

      You mean the people on the back of the $2 bill? Those are members of the Continental Congress who approved and signed the Declaration of Independence. They still exist, except they're all dead now.

      Legally, yes. They are regular currency which just so happens to have been "decorated". But will a store accept it? My guess is no. $2 bills are already looked at apprehension - try presenting one with Darth Vader or Snoopy on it and it's highly unlikely they'll take it unless the cashier intends to buy it out of the register with her own money.

    Why was the two dollar bill made?

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  4 роки тому

      Back in 1862 when they made the first Federally-issued currency, it was the natural order of things. Stuff didn't cost much, so a $1 made sense, then a $2, and they were going to make a $3, but never did. The simple answer is that was a logical bill to make considering the relative cost of items.

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary

      Good question. They have actually have less since they are handled less. But it's tough to get facts on that without testing a whole bunch of bills.

    • @damantioworks
      @damantioworks 5 років тому +1

      @@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary well, getting a hold of 2 dollar bills isn't very hard for you, since you already have many. For the testing part, there are various methods for sampling large amounts of banknotes.

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  5 років тому

      I don't do anything different than anyone else can do - I just go to the bank and ask for them. If you want more like I do, just go to more banks (or tell 1 bank how many you want and they'll order them for you). I could test bills of all denominations, but it'd be such a small sample size compared to the true number of bills out there, that the results would be anything but conclusive. A different batch of the same denominations could yield an exact opposite result depending on where those bills have been.

      Technically it is, but the word 'defacing' is taken very literally. So writing your phone number on a bill is not really defacing it. Still, police have better things to do than arrest you for giving Thomas Jefferson a pair of glasses and a mustache.

      Did you say donuts?? Anyway, if you want to see some, go to the bank and get them. Have the bank order them if they don't have them handy. Then use them. The reason you never see them is because people think they're rare or valuable, and so they hoard them. $2 bills are regular currency which should be treated as such. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they didn't make more last November. They did.

    Decoration? Sad to think that this character made a business out of rubber stamps to exercise their "rights" of free speech by "decorating" any currency,. I wonder how other countries (EU for example) handle this kind of decorating. Maybe this hints that keeping a stash of virgin bills might make them of interest downstream when the world is polluted with cartoonish currency. Hell, keep a stash anyway, in addition to spending them at the local McDonalds (which always throws the young counter-clerks into a tizzy). They thought my Kennedy 50 cent piece was a dollar coin last week.
