Sean Schemmel was asked what does he think of Team Four Star. Sean doesn't like how TFS uses someone else's animation for their own business model. He stated that Toei and Funimation don't support it and told them to stop, they don't.
2020 Edit: Well Team Four Star has announced that they're stopping Dragon Ball Z Abridged after 60 episodes and are now doing Parody Shorts. I wish them the best.

If only TFS would encourage people to support the official release.
I'll give them that they do encourage support of the official media, but I think the issue is probably that the TFS version is just better than the original, and while it wouldn't work without the original work having been made it still improves on it. It's the definitive version of DBZ

To be fair I did support the official release as I did by the manga and I think that some parts are better in the real release and some in the abridged

It's called working for a corporation. I don't get why people are so mad about what he says. It's obvious he can't endorse it, but even in the situation in which he is, he says it's kind of funny.
And it’s ironic that in the past couple years teamfourstar has really grown as a company and blown up into a high status, successful financially company and all that, in part because of there connections made with Chris Sabat and funimation in Texas. Heck they even all moved to Texas and have a huge office close by funimation hq.

Yeah i get not being contracually allowed to approve of vocally but he went on to basically down it as if he genuinely doesnt like it. He didnt have to go that far to avoid breaching contract. Plus hes the same guy whos on youtube also having a very different opinion from a few years ago, and saying "muffin button" with no problem, a line from tfs.
He expressed in that interview however that he was then worried that funimation would eventually make a stink about tfs

Sean had actually supported DBZA prior to this referencing their jokes and saying he enjoyed them. He only backtracked after finding out Toei didn’t like DBZA and kept taking it down. Which fair play to him I wouldn’t want to lose my job over something like that either
Absolutely. Sean is stating his opinion from a professional standpoint. he admits it's funny but he seems like a careful guy and is trying to choose his words carefully to not piss funaimtion or toei. Even if it is legal it's still mabye a sour subject at either fo the studios and while other actors do like it, Sean seems the type where carefully sdes but no way he's being an asshole here.

I’d believe that if Chris Sabat didn’t whole heartedly support/love TFS. Sounds more to me like Sean is a bit of a egotist and thinks he’s the only one who should voice Goku, the fair use comment is bullshit as otherwise dbza would have been taken down a decade ago.

He doesn't give a damn, he's seen the parodies and laughted like we all did but he's a business man and has to act in a certain way.
I thought he gave a smart answer where he clearly shows he's on the side of his employer, but also gives credit to TFS without undercutting those who sign his paychecks. He could have very easily have just said "screw TFS I don't support it" and left it at that.

Não é que o Sean Schmell fica sem comer quando o team four star posta um ep de dba, a questão é que nesse momento ele tava em um evento público onde os fãs faziam perguntas, e que tava sendo gravado. Ele não tem controle do que os fãs vão perguntar pra ele. E quando um fã faz uma pergunta do que ele acha sobre o dba, ele simplesmente não pode dizer que apoia, sabendo que a empresa dona do programa de mais sucesso que ele provavelmente ja dublou é contra. Ele pode literalmente perder o emprego dele.

When you go against what they have told you in that piece of paper, you could lose your job, why? Because of a question a fan made and you were too eager yo reply to it. You should look into how many times Christopher actually said that about Abridged, if he said it only once that would be the reason Sean said all of what you disagree with, if he said it more than once, then my whole argument goes in the trash bin.
I met Sean in person at an event in Toronto. I thought it was strange that his line up was exceedingly shorter than Christopher Sabbat’s. After listening to him give these two fans in front of me a pep talk on why to not do steroids it was my turn to meet him. It turns out he’s an extremely normal person.. which is perfectly fine, I shouldn’t have put him so high up in my expectations. We had a boring conversation about nothing and that was that. I grabbed a picture and went on my way disappointed. And then I met Christopher Sabbat after sitting in his huge line up. Oh my god was he the coolest person ever. He stole my phone from me and recorded a video of himself forcing me to scream as if I was transforming into a super Sayian, and then he joined in with me. Chris then asked about the woman with me being my wife and I replied that she was indeed. He then said in his Vegeta voice “as the prince of all sayians I now bless your marriage”. We talked even more about a couple different things and I left with my faith renewed. Incredible experience.
Tl;dr Vegeta is a better character than goku both in show and reality.
In other news, water is a liquid.

It also depends on what version the character he’s talking about. His dub version is WAY different then the original Japanese version and Super is different from the DBZ version. DBZA is a parody version, but even the most hardcore fans adore the parody version. Sean’s logic is is horribly flawed.

I full on believe Toriyama likes DBZA, he even used their "Piccolo is bad at naming things" joke to name Piccolo's new form.

Pros:
- Admits Teamfourstar is talentated despite disagreements.
- Legal contract to being Goku is also his personal loyalty because he loves the character as he is, which has some honor.
- Asks fans to refrain rather than being disrespectful like telling them to "seriously just shut up about this" or "I'm annoyed of people asking me because I don't care."
- Goes into detail so he gives legitimate reasoning and avoids assumptions.
Cons (no pun intended):
- Doesn't acknowledge (or perhaps know about in his defense) the opening of each episode giving credibility to every production studio and Akira Toriyama as well as Teamfourstar stating they're fans parodying the franchise.
- Doesn't acknowledge longtime friend and co-worker Christopher Sabat (Vegeta/Piccolo) supports the franchise.
- Doesn't acknowledge Kyle Hubert (Gohan) works with them. Although in his defense he may not know this.
- Funimation was impressed by voice actors from Teamfourstar and hired them for dub characters, a major contradiction to his word on legal reasons when it comes to certain production studios.
Conclusion: Sean Schemmel answered fairly and clearly has a desire to be faithful to the character's accuracy and legal circumstances, but lacks perspective in regards to Teamfourstar and how much they love Dragonball being a parody that's entertaining but overall respectful to the franchise.

It may be, but they were making money off it through the youtube infrastructure. That's why they got shut down twice for copyright infringement. It began as nonprofit, but they started making enough money that they turned it into a business.

The whole English DBZ fandom revived because of TFS. At the start of every effing episode they state that DBZA is a fan-based parody, and encourages us to support the official release.
Sean should be thankful for TFS doing what they did with the series and gave us quite honestly a better quality product than the OG.

I don't understand why Toei doesn't just give TFS the right to use their animation. TFS can create content without the fear of having it removed from platforms, and Toei, I'm sure, can receive a percentage of whatever TFS profits. I don't know. I'm no business man or anything, but I feel like this would make things easier for everybody.
Japan is weird about copyright and parody law, they don't follow the American laws for it for some reason and follow their own laws, but UA-cam follows the American laws for it so that's why DBZA wasn't cancelled until the end of the Cell Saga.

It's illegal, which is why none of team four star will ever be a part of something official because they stole clips from a show. If team four star had a case they'd go to court. They don't because they know they'd lose with that bullshit fair use argument..

The argument becomes pretty simple when you factor in dbza consisting almost entirely of Toei's animation. Like, the only thing keeping this case from being easily shut is the fact it's international.
I like dbza. I'm also pretty sure it infringes on copyright. I think most people can't take the step back and think about it objectively because most people arguing one way or the other are either big fans or haters. Ask a lawyer if a fandub consisting of 80-90% animation from a company you did not ask for the rights to use is "fair use". I doubt they'll say "yes".

The law is not opinion. And most certainly is not yours.
That's the thing. Fair use is entirely opinion of the court at the time, as it has no clear legal definition. It's also a US copyright term only, consider that this case can be brought in any country in the world were youtube is available, and nearly all those countries lack a fair use claus.
Then they could just fight the claim on the artwork, the characters, the trademarks, all of which they would win hands down as they have no been altered significantly enough. Then there is the obvious case that this never really went to court, as youtube would just pull it to cover their own ass nevermind fair use or not, they aren't ever going to risk making themselves liable for someone else's sake. That said, I love tfs.

Genís Sastre Borras well they aren’t using entirely legally with fair use. Fair use covers the use of a portion of the material to criticize, educate or parody something. Now you might say well they are parodying dragon ball z and I agree with however the definition of a parody could either deny it completely or validate it. It requires criticizing the series which it does, but not in review type of critique. I love DBZA but I understand why they had to cancel it( yes I know the burnout is a big factor too).
@@kevinstephenson3531 DBZA is a parody and it does use excerpts from the show and not full segments. It is covered by all aspects of fair use protection. Quite frankly, it always pisses me off when companies like Toei do this shit. DBZA helps DBZ persist, it doesn't detract from it.

Even though, TFS is legally warranted as they make no money off their content. Not that the company man, Sean Schemmel, would ever get that. Same guy who pissed away a friendship with Vic and threw him under the bus so Funimation could save face.
Most of the reason he feels this way is because how he feels about Goku. Sean is very protective of Goku from what I've heard and read. I guess it might also be his job to say he doesn't like TFS.
Convinced he HAS to say he doesn't condone TFS because of Toei. They really hate them and he's probably just scared of losing his job or something because his statements here don't line up with, say, him saying in Goku's voice what a little shit Gohan is when playing Kakarot.

Now, I don't really watch dragon ball z, but Sean really strikes me as a high and mighty prick.
If anything, TFS makes people rewatch the old original dragonball stuff, or it even attracts new people to the dragonball franchise in general via UA-cam... So in my opinion it is a good thing
Also: DBZA wouldn't even work in the first place if you haven't watched the original. So many jokes would just fall flat

The sole reason I decided to get a funimation subscription and rewatch DBZ, as well as pick up DB and DBS was because TFS got me back into the series. I love his work, but fuck Sean Schemmel.

i can get that. idk if i’d agree completely but abridged is awesome and helped me through some dark times when i was down. so did the original dbz animation as well it’s just tfs content takes wild turns that i love. i don’t wanna say i’d rather have the abridged version forreal(even tho i wouldn’t mind) i wish these actors had the opportunity to do what tfs does to an extent. couldn’t imagine sean schemmel telling frieza he looks weird. or vegeta calling 18 a washing machine.
