When I taught electronics in a state tech center, a farmer donated a Ford tractor that had spent 35 years underwater in a farm pond. Our Farm Implement students did a miracle complete restoration. Driving it around the parking lot, I drove it up the front steps onto the main building porch and left it there. I turned on our school's PR dept. and they made a display for it showing the fore/during/results the teens had done. After it stayed there a few weeks, I contacted local schools and we made a show 'n tell driving it around to the schools. The farm program got over 150 applicants the next year, saving the program.

I've been working on these older diesel tractors for years, they always had little smoke to them at idle. They were never designed to idle for long, they were built to get hot and work for hours on end with little to no breaks. Great work so far, its a beautiful tractor.

The thing about borrowing tools, when you break them You have to pay twice, 1) Replace the tool you broke and return it, 2) Buy your own tool.

You did an amazing job on this, you should be proud. These are never quick restorations/fixes, and yes, you have an amazingly understanding wife ( that she gets why you do what you do), treat her to something nice. I restored a 69 Z28 years ago. I too had two young children…spent many a late night in the shop after helping my wife with the kids ( she got it too, like yours ). You’ve got a new subscriber. You done good.👍

I grew up in Warren. First 2 jobs were at two gas stations at 11 mile and Dequindre. Looks like you are in that area so I gotta ask what are you planning to do with these larger tractors?
I have a old L2900 dt Kubota diesel 4wd I did similar overhaul as yourself.
I loved your comment about time for the tractor to graduate. My tractor graduated with B minus grades.
The red epoxy paint? What kind? The fasteners are going to rust. I think you should paint them. Too nice a job painting everything else. Keep these coming, very good to see.@dieseJL

Even my nicest old naturally aspirated ford diesels smoke like that, the best ones do clear up when they are working running a chopper or pulling a disc. But on a calm day with the rear exit exhaust, you have a hazey gray cloud following you around the orchard.
Hit some thick grass or put extra load to them and they let the black smoke fly.
However, i have no experience with those pre 65 diesels.
But it doesn't sound bad to me!
You did a nice job on it, and whatever you spent would not buy half that much tractor new.

After asking around some old timers they all agreed the US market has almost all gasoline motors and the UK market has mostly diesel motors as the rest of Europe. Fordson, Ferguson shared some components but I’ve heard the motors were more diesel designed. This is all information I’ve heard from older retired farmers.

Great job on the tractor. I have an 801 Select-O-Speed diesel that I inherited from my dad. He told me that he bought a gas tractor first but it used too much gas so he took it back and traded it for the diesel. Also, my tractor has a metal bracket that goes from the exhaust pipe over to a bolt hole for the hood so it doesn’t vibrate.

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 4 місяці тому

Our 801 had the exhaust that exited under the running board and to the rear. It was a smooth running tractor unless it got a tiny slug of water in the system. And in Florida there was no way to prevent it as our humidity is so high. The problem with a Select-O-Speed transmission is that as soon as the engine stops, it goes into park.

Your manuals are what us older mechanics wished for. We asked someone who like ourselves, had done it before so information was handed down just like the tractor you will let one of your kids have. I pity that you have to pick who gets what as I am at a age of letting things go to who I think will treat it with respect. I am so happy to see you learning this even tho there is no need for this trade of old equipment on the whole as they are limited to who still has one and whether they need that help or not. You now have information at a punch of a button and to me is the greatest thing happening now.. very nice work and keep doing it as your going to get this kind of respect at some point in time

When I saw you take the power steering pump apart I thought you'd end up with a different pump. I had a pump like that and took it to an older Ford tractor mechanic. He said he couldn't reassemble the pump without the jig that you 3D printed. I'm impressed you got the pump reassembled and working.

Being semi inflated the tyre irons have more chance of sliding on the rubber rather than trapping it😮. Hope you and your family have a great new year😊
