I can just see the fight now: Hard Man's in rare form, the best of his life, he's fighting like a demon and all Mega can do is shell up. He wants the knockout, the photo, the glory, he can taste it, he's got the most skill he ever has and Mega's hanging on the ropes just to avoid punishment. But in that moment, in that glorious moment, he realizes that Mega Man played him. He knew that Hard Man wouldn't be able to resist going all out like he was in his twenties, he knew that the thrill of the fight would go against his judgement... and he gasses out as Mega Man guards. He's not the champion, then. He's an old man, and it's all he can do to keep his fists up. Mega's combinations aren't as skilled, but Hard Man can hardly block, and that iron jaw of his is getting hammered. He misses a big right hand that he could have countered, that he should have countered, and the ring is spinning. Mega's got a merciful streak, he doesn't pounce on that, and the ref doesn't have to pull him off. The ref only has to count. Hard Man is TKO'd and everyone knows it... everyone except an old fan who starts to sing, just like in the old days. "Harder than Steel!" The crowd chimes in. Even Mega's corner can't help but respect the guy, still on his feet. And his fists crawl back up to stance before the count can end. He's back. It's a miracle. He throws another combination, the blows are incredible, the slips, the parries, he's back at his peak, and it's a miracle.
Mega Man takes it by decision, but he holds Hard Man's fist high as the bell sounds. Mega takes the belt, but Hard Man's legacy is harder than steel.
You paint an incredibly vivid picture. It's got all the right fight lingo and metaphors. It follows the story of the match beat-for-beat and it's amazing reading it during that segment of the song. Just thought to give some words of appreciation; a tumbs-up just doesn't feel like enough.

This is pretty much how I saw it, but Megaman sticks Hard Man with a Magnet Missile for the dirty win and walks out the winner under a chorus of boos. Though this ties in more to how I viewed History Repeating as lines being blurred and Megaman being perceived (and perceiving himself) as much less of a hero as the war with Wily drags on. Also 'cuz Magnet Missile is Hard Man's weakness.

I remember before the album came out and I was like, "What are they going to do for Hard Man??" Then you guys dropped THIS and I was just totally blown away. Still so good.

Gotta say, headcanoning freaking Hard Man of all people as a past-his-prime fighter who's been pulled out of retirement for one last go at it is not something I would have thought of, but I'm glad someone else did.
Everyone always makes fun of Hard Man because of his name and weapon, and I got a feeling that the band members felt sorry for him. Which is why they gave Hard Man one of the best songs on the album! I really love the characterization they gave Hard Man in this song.
Best song on the album? I'd say it's the best song they've ever made.
Everybody got "That" song, that one song from the album they love though it might not be what is commonly considered the best song. I'm so happy to see so many people who feel the way I do about Harder Than Steel. This is the song that gets me up in the morning and keeps me in shape.
Gotta say, fellas, it would have been too easy just to pepper a cover of Hard Man with sexuel innuendo and double entendres, heck, that's arguably part of Hard Man's name as it is, but instead you chose a much more creative route, and I applaud the four of you for it.
The mad lads actually managed to make me like a boss enemy I didn't care for in a game i didn't particularly like (controversial opinion there I know)
The first time I heard this song, it was just background noise while I was playing some online games with my friends. I didn't give this song much thought at the time. I just remember the part with the crowd singing standing out and that was about it. Recently I was listening to the album while working on some assignments. I had to stop and pause when I noticed a tear running down my cheek while this song was playing. That was the first time I actually looked up the lyrics to this song and now it is impossible for me to not get emotional when listening to this song. This is a beautiful story, and I thank you for sharing it with the world. Keep being awesome

As an older gamer and a fighter, this hit all the right spots for me. Great stuff.
I love this song
This song has grown on me so much. I kept skipping it because I didn't like it, then at work I found myself humming the tune. Now I love it.
I can picture the ending perfectly.
Mega Man, after a close brush with destruction pulls an upset, giving Hard Man back all the hits he landed and then some and the crowd can see it's too much for the champ. What was once a stadium of rabid cheers is now a dome of stunned silence.
Everyone knows what's happening and only a few Hard Fans can say it. They plead with him to call it quits, but Hard Man, too determined to stand down refuses. He rises from his corner with eyes locked on Mega Man's, the young robot through his battered frame beams an unwavering stare to his opponent. One is running on Empty and the other running on Fumes, both machines signalling that neither will leave until the other is destroyed. The crowd can only watch in horror..
The Final Round begins. Mega Man wastes no time dismantling his aging foe. He ends his flurry with a signature uppercut that sends Hard Man to his grave. The old warrior has met his end. Irreparably damaged, he lays on his back as his systems fail. With Hard Man's shutdown imminent, Mega Man, with exposed wiring and leaking fluids musters the strength to raise his arm high for a triumphant cheer to mark his victory, and the crowd obliges....

The lone chant startles Mega Man. His eyes widen as he turns around in shock to see his opponent a lifeless heap.
"Harder...Than Steel...!"
The chant joined by more voices. Alarmed, Mega Man stands frozen in the ring. He looks around seeing rows of spectators rise from their seats as he lowers his arm and his head dips remorsefully.
"HARDER...THAN STEEL...!"
Mega Man's shoulders droop as he accepts the realization. He exits the ring with a solemn weight pressing on him. As he does so, the fans pour into the ring to surround their defeated champion.
*"HARDER...THAN STEEL..!!!"*
The fans rush past Mega Man to lift their idol. Hard Man, before powering off for one final time is comforted with the sight of hundreds of adoring fans; their tears, excitement and howls were a sight that none would ever forget, not even those watching the live broadcast from elsewhere.
Mega Man, with a deep mournful sigh walks out the stadium. He fights back the tears welling up in his eyes and keeps his gaze forward. His body damaged with chipped armor, exposed endoskeleton and sparking circuitry. He had just had one of his most heroic fights of his lifetime and took a crucial step towards Everlasting Peace.
But after tonight, he had never felt more like a Villain.

It ties in to the idea of Hard Man being outdated as the song itself relays themes of an old boxer coming back to fight.
This has such a Ashita no Joe feel to its narrative. Hopelessly tragic.
This might be my straight up favorite song in History Repeating. It's so great.

I remember my dad showed this to me without the context of mega man, and i was thinking the whole time: "oh man, what's the comeback gonna be like? Surely this champion can't lose to a newcomer!"
