- Steve plays an improvised solo on "Building the Church" at Guitar Center in Hollywood, CA. The audience included 10 courageous and talented guitarists who entered the Guitar Center Private Sessions contest. Each winner was hand-picked by Steve.
When I pick up a guitar, I am honoured to be holding the same instrument as Steve Vai.

The thing I always liked about Vai is how relaxed and unforced he sounds. Hes just noodling around here and Christ....its just so smooth. Awesome.
Arpeggios, improvisation on just one string, joined, alternating picking, tapping, sweeping. A genius.
Hey Steve, I'm 38 and from Tasmania, Australia. I've been enjoying your music since I was 10 or 11 years old. There's something spiritual in your playing that sets you apart from everyone else I've heard, I just dig it. Such a pleasure to see you here on UA-cam. I love how he balances technical flash and whammy bar insanity with melodic portions, so it's not all "nonsense" and there's something for everyone to grasp at one point or another.
Just think a little moment, what would be passing through Vai's mind while playing an improvisation? damn, every note from him, its pure gold

Spot on. I actually can't believe people argue this. I went to a Steve Vai masterclass a few years ago where he talked for 3 hours. It was extremely inspirational. He rightly talked about that being the worlds fastest shredder is just as valid a goal as wanting to play a few Bob Dylan songs on the beach. What matters is what YOUR goal is. Steve's goal was to find his own unique voice on the instrument. He succeeded. STEVE VAI WINS!!!!!! lol

When I play like this, I don’t know what I’m doing. When Steve Via plays like this, he’s a creative intermodal genius.
Yep. Just human bias at work. Though I think parts of it work because Steve mixes in simple diatonic melody lines along with the weird and wacky stuff, as if to remind the listener that he does know how to color inside the lines before going right outside them again.

Exactly man. Glad to see someone who agrees. I would love to be in a masterclass with him. I saw the vid of him at guitar center talking about musical goals and he inspired me to play five hours a day despite having exams. He has taught me to look at the guitar in a different way. He also made me want to study a lot of differen't genres and incorporate them into my playing. Couldn't agree more mate! :)

He was in Frank Zappas band from 1980 - 1984, replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in Alcatraz and released an album with them, then he joined the David Lee Roth band after David left Van halen, releasing 2 albums with him. Then he toured with Whitesnake, and then went solo! :D (went solo in 1992)
This actually sounds nothing like the album recording which is incredible, he never ceases to amaze me
