David O'Connell, that's what I love about Irish Folk: it's not about how good you are at singing, but it's all about how much you enjoy singing. In general in singing the main thing is how much you enjoy singing, but in Irish Folk in particular, most of the songs are simple, easy, you don't need to be Pavaroti to sing them, but if you enjoy singing the audiabce will love your performance and in a pub or concert hall, which you are performing at will be such a great atmosphere, which can not be found in La Scalla or anywhere else.

As a Turkish guy, I find Irish folk culture fascinating. Universal, true compassion for the fellow men and the beauty of our nature are underlined in subtexts in every song. This type of music has simple, pure human emotions vibrating all over the notes.
Especially Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem performing feels like they are taking you to a trip. You are visiting the small towns in plains and hills of Ireland, smelling the grass and fresh breeze.
One thing that single handedly adds so much authenticity and quality to the Clancy Brothers' songs is, that specific banjo-like instrument which sounds like cow bells at times. Its resonation is very authentic and drops you right into the old times, old towns and old tales.
While these guys are the best in my opinion, also Luke Kelly is the closest one to give rise to such a feeling. And others are not even close in quality, at least the ones I already discovered. But, I'm sure of that this culture has many hidden treasures that can't be discovered over the internet.

Tom was the "hardy heart" of the Clancy Bros. I loved when he introduced himself and his brothers on stage.... "..and last but 'most" I am Tom Clancy!"

i know this a 7 years late response stomach cancer is a bitch , it's has high rate as it suffers from the same issue many gastrointestinal cancers suffer from complex Lymphatic drainage .
The best country performing against this stomach and Oesphogaus cancer Is Japan ( the most country affected with 2 times western rate ) ; and they do it with aggressive early screening and fibroscope . some Irish guy in the 80 ies stood no chance

What a great period of time it was to grow up hearing the Clancy Brothers, and the Irish Rovers. Sadly, it was also a time of conflict in Ireland known as "The Troubles" (see Wikipedia). But the Clancys' music stands the test of time. And I think the "Troubles" are over (or just dormant ?)

While going to the fair of Dingle
    One fine morning last July
While going up the road before me
A red haired girl I chanced to spy
I went up to her, says I "Young lady
My donkey he will carry two
But seeing as how you have a donkey
To the Dingle fair I'll ride with you"
Now, when we reached the town of Dingle
I took her hand to say goodbye
When a tinker man stepped up beside me
And he belted me in my left eye
    Chorus:
Keep your hands off red haired Mary
Her and I will soon be wed
We'll see the priest this very morning
And tonight we'll lie in a married bed
Now, I was feeling kind of peevish
And my poor old eye was sad and sore
So I tapped him gently with my hobnail
And he fell back through Murphy's door
A policeman came around the corner
And he told me I had broke the law
Then, the donkey kicked him in the kneecap
And he fell down and broke his jaw
Then he went off to find his brother
The hot biggest man you ever did meet
And he gently tapped me with his knuckles
And I was minus two front teeth
The red haired girl, she kept on smiling
"I'll go with you young man" she said
"We'll forget the priest this very morning
And tonight we'll lie in Murphy's shed"
    (last two lines of chorus):
We'll forget the priest this very morning
And tonight we'll lie in Murphy's shed
Now, through the town we rode together
My black eye and her red hair
    Smiling gaily at the tinkers
And by God, we were a handsome pair
    (last two lines of chorus):
We'll forget the priest this very morning
And tonight we'll lie in Murphy's shed
