Up until the 1972 season the Lakers hadn’t won a championship since they moved to Los Angeles in 1960 and the fans were growing restless after making it to the finals a total of 8 times losing every time. The worst loss came in the 1969 finals. In the first season with Wilt Chamberlain the Lakers cruised through the regular season and after dispatching San Fransico and Atlanta in the opening 2 rounds of the playoffs the Lakers prepared for a highly anticipated rematch with the rival Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.
