Get a really good listen as to how effects were used in a primarily analogue domain. It’s fun hearing these older tracks and understanding how far we’ve come in terms of what we have access to these days!
We have lists of different plug-ins that we can use to get the sounds that they get - but none of that matters if you don’t approach it methodically and with attention to detail. Their mastery of lower pitch and raspy sounds can be linked to the various elements found HERE! :)
James Hetfield has such a pleasant voice, still that warmth and tragedy even when he's shouting. I think that's one of the reasons why I love that band
Please do Outlaw Torn. There are decent vocal tracks for both S&M and S&M2. Would be really interesting to hear from you the changes and evolution in James’ voice 20 years apart.
"Notice that I'm a slightly different version of insane, everytime." I have a feeling this line will resonate as I produce vocals on my album, thanks Chris.
I thought the backup vocals in the bridge at 23:40 were done by Cliff, he had a neat, deep growl.
i also think they are
Howdy, Chris! Really glad I discovered you, as '86 Hetfield and Corey Taylor both make me 'squee!' like a wee lass, and I dig your approach! Hey, at ca. 32:40, you mention that Jaymz goes a bit (half-step) sharp on the second 'Master!.' He's actually just going for the roots of the E5 and F5 chords played respectively. Kinda sounds like he nails the F, but with him tapering off so quickly, it's hard to hear! It certainly doesn't help being a half-step ABOVE the E he's coming from, especially after filling out the surrounding notes right before, ie G (Obey) - F# (your) - E (Master) - F (Master).
Also, if anyone is gonna get all Internet on me, I was a college Music Professor before COVID, with three Masters' of Music. I'm not trying to be a dick, simply helping a fellow professional, just like his videos are a help to me!
These vocal isolation vids is top shelf content 🤘
Within the first 10 mins, I feel like you have unlocked all the mystery and answered all questions i have about the way i sing...i was always so afriad i was singing in a way that was damaging my throat...at the start i would cough and get the "tickle" buy after years of singing now, its like second nature. I always learn something from you my friend! Thanks for all you do!! 🤘🤘
This is great to read! I'm so glad you've unlocked some cool stuff in your voice!
@@chrisliepe you are definitely one of (if not) the best bro!! 🤘
“I like going more extreme, it helps me learn 😈.” -Chris Liepe 2021
Your doubled vocals really show how doubling can make a vocal line sound more interesting. Some people say it adds weight but I think it’s more those moments where the vocals are doing slightly different tones that make it have some magic. The more vocal breakdowns I watch from you and others makes me realize that nearly all my favorite vocalists doubled their vocals.
Thats an amazing one! The way you present both singing approach and production is sooo good!
A lot of people dont look to Metallica for vocals but Papa Het has quite the range and his tone fits their sound so well. That little alterboy plugin is insane. It reminds me of the bad guy in The Mask, when he gets the mask itself. Thanks Chris.
I thought it sounded like it was Cliff just speaking in a really deep voice very close to the mic, proximity effect and all on the Master master, laughter laughter part.
Also, James' doubling is pretty damn good!
Sounds like there a phaser or something on the delay?
Master is supposed to be a half step up the second time, he follows the guitars.
Ok, enough over analyzing lol. Great video! 🤘🤘
Great Video. I love his distortion voice. Can you do Nothing Else Matters? He can sing so softly and I don't know how he got this "know" in the chorus. It sounds so superhumanly.
James wasn't even supposed to be the singer of Metallica, actually....
Wow! Really been waiting for this kind of stuff! Amazing job Chris!
I didn’t know before, but I really needed this… this is amazing, one of my favorite songs
Please do one Isolated Vocal Analysis for Robert Smith of The Cure, please.
Yeah, that would be great!
@@intelligentfilms2551 He has a weird yet interesting voice and till now I haven't heard any other singers who have this singing style. Would like to know what Chris has to say about his voice 🙂
@@dookhynabeelah4897 I don't think his voice is weird, but i do love him as an artist. And this band really has their unique sound, which is so lovely for me. One of my favourite bands ever.
@@intelligentfilms2551 Yeah definitely. Haha..maybe 'unique' is the word and not 'weird' but I think that the weirdness of it makes its beauty and uniqueness 😜
Definitely!!!!! Love the cure
Disturbed - Voices or the sound of silence would be really cool :)
Been waiting on this one for a while one of my most influential guitarist and singers.
People need to see this masterclass. Comment for that algorithm.
Benjamin Burnley (Breaking Benjamin)- Wish I May
Phil Collins- I Don’t Care
Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach)- Thrown Away
Corey Taylor (Stone Sour)- 1st Person
Shaun Morgan (Seether)- Pig
Fantastic series Chris! This deserves way more views!
I just noticed, he might not necessarily be forcing non-rhyming words to rhyme! It looks like he might be using an ABAB rhyme scheme for the chorus, which is a lot more common in poetry. Every other line rhymes instead of the usual way of doing it. That being said, he's totally annunciating every line in the chorus as if they're all supposed to rhyme! Metallica was my introduction to rock/metal music back when Guitar Hero was popular lol. I love these vocal breakdowns you do possibly more than any other content on youtube, ty!
I forget where I heard it, but at the time James was more focused on the percussive aspect of vocals which is why he didn’t care so much about pitch
For doing specific delays on only one word like that, I get lazy and just create a new track with the delay and cut the part of the take and move it down. It’s easier in my mind for some reason even though I’m pretty sure it’s actually not
Metallica posted a video half an hour ago
Good timing lol
Ooh cool... Hopefully that helps this video take off!
You should check out some stuff from Trivium's in waves album! Has great dynamics from ultra clean to some sick growls
Great video and introspection vocally and on the recording aspects too.
Thanks Chris. That 90's reverb trick is a revelation. I always wondered how the vocal sounded so deep and precise without being too wet. I finally know how what pre-delay can be used for.
Thanks, great combination of teaching/learning singing and mixing/production. Love this vids
Cool, looking forward for this lesson
So cool with the delay effects and than the low doubles in the Bridge with the pitch effects
Great lesson again Chris, thank you so much
Chris,I really appreciate your channel.
It's help me so much for me to learn about singing.thanx man..and your spelling speak so clear and help me so much to understand.greetings I'm from Indonesia🙏🙏
Such a legendary song, this was awesome to hear!
I would absolutely love to see a Vocal Analysis of Ross Jennings from Haken
This is great content. Much appreciated.
I'd love to see you talk about Ian Kenny from karnivool in one of your videos sometime whether it's a sing like or an iso vocal video. He's just got such a clean well developed mix and really has some interesting styles he does with his voice
I’d pay millions of dollars to see you do one on Peter Steele from Type O Negative. Specifically, something off the album October Rust
The deeper master at 24:35 is actually backing vocals from the bassist
Would love to hear what you have to say about how Fat Mike from NOFX sings/screams.
I think more emo-esque songs would be very interesting to watch. Like maybe Deftones, nine inch nails, smashing pumpkins, Bring me the horizon, a day to remember, or always more Slipknot.
After watching your left behind breakdwon the ending of the song gives me goosebumps listening to it now. I no longer hear him laughing I hear him desperately calling out for help. I don’t know how to explain it but the breakdown and how you were explaining it all in that specific video was amazing to see you fit the shoes of that character. And I feel like more painful emotional songs would bring more of that “energy” I suppose you could call it
Hey Chris!
I would love to see you do isolated vocal track on Disposable Heroes or maybe even rather Damage Inc. There is such an awesome scream in the "Blood will follow Blood" part.
your videos? the higest level of learning... I´d love if you analyzed live versions, also without effects for appreciating true singers techniques
Hey man, I love watching these iso vocal track reactions, and love hearing about the production and how the sounds come about. Your channel was recommended to me by UA-cam a few weeks ago, and I subbed pretty much immediately. You have such a calm and cool way of breaking everything down, and it's very clear that you're passionate and knowledgeable about your work.
That said, I was wondering if you could try to find some songs from Seether (especially from the Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces album if possible) to analyze and break down. The vocal distortion seems so easy and painless, but such an iconic style, and the production that goes into the vocal work is very interesting and unique sounding. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Thanks for doing what you do, and I look forward to ever more entertaining and educational content.
loving these videos so much. very helpful
LMAO the captions say "beans and pump with fear sucking duck is clear"
haha... excellent!
You should check out tom ellis version of wicked game.
Damn, chris been doing some curls
Twice a week! :)
I accidentally had the captions on. They transcribed the "ritual misery" line as "Rachel Missouri."
Something from Maynard James Keenan would be great, his voice is so soothing

Skillet will be releasing a new single in the coming weeks, so I think it might be a good time to analyze John Cooper.
What about Shannon Hoon!? Great singer! Thanks for sharing, Chris! :)

Please do Grey Daze - Morei Sky 1994,isolated vocal Chester Bennington
Hi Chris! What about an isolated vocals from a Dream Theater song? Love your content
Do a live version like maybe Seattle 89 but do four horsemen? Vocals on that are class
Amazing video as always, Chris. What about an analysis video of Tom Walker or Dan Reynolds, these guys have a cool different style. Cheers,
It would be cool to see/learn how you find or create these isolated vocals
I enjoy you Chris
would love a breakdown of any song by smashing pumpkins
Yes! "Soma" goes from super soft to super hard. GREAT song. Enjoy the bass... after listening you'll need to towel off the reverb and ambiance.
"Geek USA" has a small laid-back part too and so does "Mayonaise" (yes, I'm all about the "Siamese Dream" album).
Whatever you do, DO NOT DO "Tonight". That's the worst vocal tone to ever be recorded by anyone. :)
hetfield had such a unique which is hard to imitate
Matt Barlow from Iced Earth! Please!
Yeah. The coming curse or when the night falls. Song which show his variety and his epic blendings.
@@fallinghausen2707 his power in Dracula was just amazing
@@TheHellZone99 yes. Absolutely unmatched. I saw em on that tour. It was amazing.
I love the gang of devils in the background lol
please do some tips on how to sing like Dustin Bates from Downplay and Starset
Please do one for Warrel Dane, from Nevermore. Any song is good with me...
hey, Chris ! do you have the songs on your intro available anywhere, if yes could you tell me? I’d love to hear them! I love hearing your intro it is so cool !
Some are on Spotify. Some are work for hire for radio programs and I don’t have the permission to release them
alright! thanks, I’ll make sure to check the ones out on Spotify ! can’t wait actually
Thank you for these videos! Can I just ask which software you use to separate the vocals?
You should really do Type O Negative’s “Christian Woman”
Thanks 🙏
I just find them on UA-cam :)
Can you do Andy Biersack?
i agree do this one next please☝🏻
20:00 RREEEEEEEE
How do I know if I do something wrong in terms of grit or compression? Are there any particular sensations that can indicate poor technique? Or should I analyze the sounds I make? The problem is that whenever I try to sing aggresively it doesn't feel right and it kind of sounds weird too and I am not sure if I do everything correctly
Love your channel by the way Chris, very informative :)
Check out lots of my other videos on compression on the channel for answers to these questions. I talk a LOT about how to feel it correctly!
Comment for da algorithm
