2015 elantra 1.8L: Pulled my engine this weekend due to knocking. all cylinders are showing piston slap; cylinder 2 and 3 are the worst. Everything else looks great, no play in any bearings, no debris in pan and no sludge in block. There are several different sized OEM pistons for these blocks that would have been used in the factory; the idea being that they could bore the cylinders with a large tolerance zone then match cylinders to 3 different sized pistons. I think that the assembly line decided to use what ever pistons they had on hand for the blocks they were building and put small pistons in large cylinders (the piston to wall clearance spec is .0012" +/- .0004"). This would have been an easy mistake to make for a lowly un-professionally trained factory worker.
Thanks for the video 👍 My son’s fiancé KIA has the infamous rod knock and probably piston slap. Will be doing the troubleshooting to find the root cause. If the engine is bad, where do you purchase rebuild engines or what machine shop would you recommend?

there is a class action law suit on 1/21 for this problem Hyundai solution is replacing motor.
