Love this! I couldn't imagine doing all of this every day! Are you going to do a series of these? Like different decades?
+Heather McCarthy ooh that’s an interesting idea!
I love this idea too!
There seems a fascination for younger ladies to fixate on what the 1950’s were like, so since I am a direct “descendant” of that time period, I can honestly evaluate all of these videos. First, houses were half the size that we think is normal now. There were a lot more children. All children were expected to share bedrooms, not just with one sibling but often more. In my neighborhood, no one had more than one bathroom (at the most, one and a half bathrooms), never mind a bathroom with two sinks. Many of us remember cleaning ourselves daily with a washcloth by the sink, and not “bathing” everyday (sounds awful, but we somehow managed to survive). We did not have the massive closets-didn’t need them because we didn’t have the massive wardrobes that is present now. We all wore our clothes often, over and over. And we didn’t toss them into the dirty clothes hamper after just one wear. We wore our shoes over and over. My mom had a few purses, but nothing like women have now. Aprons were a must because you wore your dresses over and over, you didn’t toss them in the washer after one wear. You really cannot compare cleaning routines given these factors. I never saw my mother with a bright red scarf around her neck dusting. Dusting was mandatory for most houses, because they were fueled by gas/oil heat or even coal (yes, still) which made the house very dirty daily, especially in winter. No one had water softeners, so It was very important to keep kitchens/bathroom clean daily because of hard water issues that would build up on the fixtures. I never saw my mother wasting precious makeup during the day, maybe a little lipstick. Back then, hosiery was a luxury and they had seams-running down the back of the leg, seamless hose got more popular during the late 50-s and 60’s, so I never saw my mom putting on hosiery for daily wear around the house. She never wore heels around the house like I’ve seen some of young ladies “impersonating” the 50”s are doing. Everyone, both men and women wore hats outside, shopping, church, etc. As for hair, to manage those curls, many women would give themselves a “Toni” permanent. Most women set their hair in pin curls with Bobby pins, hair rollers were not used until late 50’s - 60’ (and the foam rollers did not happen until the 60’’s).
My mom was a very young housewife in the late 1950s and I, her youngest, came along in the 1960s. A lot of what you say makes sense, especially growing up in the same house that my grandparents built in the late 1940s. Like with anything, there were a few differences from what you describe simply because, like today, families weren’t exactly alike. We bathed daily but I do remember being stood on the toilet lid while my mom “topped and tailed” me…lol I did share an attic bedroom with my sister My mom had fixed it up really pretty with eye-lit lace curtains and skirt for our little vanity table.
I get what you mean about young people “impersonating” someone from the 1950s. That’s often the way with retro or vintage inspired, probably because they take a lot of information from all too perfect ads, how-to films, and old movies. Lots of these vintage ads and how-to videos can be found on UA-cam. I think it’s really neat, though, that younger people have an interest in the past. Vintage is very popular right now as far as influencing home decor and fashion. People may not want to embrace every aspect of the past but there’s an appreciation for the aesthetic, even if, at times, it’s a bit exaggerated.
Can I just say, I love how you kept it so real. You were really cleaning up your house not just tidying over an already camera ready house. 👏🏾
Aww thank you!! My house is hardly camera ready! I use my cleaning videos to get actual cleaning done! Makes much more sense to me lol
I grew up in the 60's and we did not even dare leave our toys in the living room.
they actually did have dishwashers in the 1950s! dishwashers have been around since as early as the 1860s! dishwashers became more widely owned post-WWII II.
Our home was built in the 50's so it's really cool to see this type of video!
Dishwashers were absolutely available in the 1950s, though it’s fair to say they weren’t necessarily a common thing in many households depending on income. You can Google vintage ads for them.
I think the routines that a lot of people follow are suggested tips from magazines and books of the day so it’s likely they weren’t followed exactly by every housewife. It’s still fun to give them a try and maybe take away what works for you.
I have never had a dishwasher before and now that I have one It’s like a privilege 😂😂🤷♀️ but I cannot imagine being in the 1950s and not having cleaning motivation videos! I love them especially, this style!! I watched lovemegs a lot! It’s crazy! Great video!! 💗
Love your kitchen - love the color and especially the black counter tops.
I noticed you use blue glass cleaner, I live in Pittsfield Township where there is two major universities on both sides in an apartment complex with lots of college students who own cars. On occasion a full gallon of windshield wiper is left. This cleans my huge bathroom mirror very quickly and sparkly clean. Thank you for this video.
Loved watching this. The music was fantastic.
I LOVE this! My grandma would clean like this (I grew up with her.) but you should do more of these. It’s actually really interesting 😂😂
I remember seeing Love Meg do some videos like this. So much fun! Loving your outfit😍 i never knew all these things they would do especially take off sheets too let the bed air out. Boiling water down the pipes, nice one. Oh i really need to go sweep my front entrance too. Nice touch with the music👍 full view and liked
+Home with Mrs. Colunga yes she was totally my inspiration!
I really enjoyed this one and that’s right if we keep on the dusting I guess it wouldn’t get too bad
Great video Contemporary Mama! One of my friends had a weekly schedule with daily cleaning chores, so cleaning the house was broken down into chunks to keep it from being overwhelming. I must say I never fully implemented it, and our home shows it! We are about done with the yellow film from the bad pollen so time to tackle! And you've now inspired me to get at it- starting with the Kitchen, as I need to stock up on groceries, but first....I'm making your chopped salad with the cilantro yogurt dressing so dinner can be prepped early on! Thanks Contemporary Mama - maybe you can bring back that 50s style!
This video was super fun and cute. I'm definitely motivated to clean after watching how hard those mamas used to clean. I've also taken the flow of the cleaning video and incorporated it into my cleaning routine. Your house is beautiful btw.
I seriously had been talking to my husband about doing retro cleaning since forever. Great job! Love the intro!
+Bettysmiles my husband came home and I’m pretty sure thought I was insane 🤣. You should totally do one too-it was so fun!
Electric dishwashers were manufactured by Hydro-Electric Manufacturing Company in Milwaukee in 1930, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society (almost forgot credit).
I absolutely love your videos and the way you present cleaning. Makes it not look like a chore just fun. I always love coming back to see what else is new.
+Dot ACHERU thank you so much that is soooo sweet!
My mom would dust everyday! The more that you do the less likely it is to get bad. Unfortunately I only do it once a week. Lol!
Automatic dishwashers definitely existed in the 1950s. Not as commonplace as today, but still utilized by many a homemaker.
+Polly Wollydoodle oh wow I definitely thought they came about in the 60’s! Thanks for letting me know
Contemporary Mama It was actually invented in the late 1920s but only the very very wealthy were able to afford it and it was usually like the maids using it then another model came in the 40s have that top washer look for a a while and I was circular through our archive videos about it to from that era it’s pretty interesting seems like they used to work a lot more efficiently and actually got them clean and less time than now three hours and they’re still being gunk on it
I remember my grandmother being in the newspaper for being one of the first in the city to have a dishwasher. Lol... My mom said her friends thought she was rich. That was 1963/64.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasss I love this! You should do all your cleaning vids like this. How fun. Donna from “The Empty Nest” dresses from the 1950’s lots. Ya they probably only had a few toys that they really appreciated unlike our brats today 🤣🤣 loved this so much
OMG 😮 I love it Carolyn!! This was sooo much fun to watch!!! Love everything about it from your outfit to the soundtrack. I realize my mom still cleans like this, the other day she was looking for a sweeper in my house lol 😂. Can’t wait for next one!
Wish I could clean that fast!
This was so fun to watch.I loved the vacuuming w a corded vacuum and sweeping with a broom. Funny how that’s “outdated” now.
The Reynolds Fam I still use both 🤔
That was neat. I could never keep up with those women, they are hero's in my book. Loved this video.
+MomOfBoys NOLA thank you!!
Love this so much. I just love all things retro. The dress and scarf with the glasses just perfect. And great cleaning as well.
Hey thank you. Good insight into the housewife cleaning routine in the 1950s.
Thanks so much for watching!
What a fun video, it's so interesting to see how they lived back then. Cant wait to watch your food one.
+Rebecca Shepherd thanks!! Ahh I gotta finishing editing it 😱
Such a fun idea! Didn't realize they poured boiling water down the drain! Haha I still sweep my house :P
Omg i wiSh i have all the energy to keep our house clean
Thank goodness for dishwashers! And I still sweep haha! But this was totally cute and cool to watch. Now I want to start airing out beds and putting up the windows.
Kristie Felice TV those would be pretty easy to start doing!
So fun! You’ve definitely motivated me! But first I have to shop for a cute outfit to wear for cleaning 😄
Hilton Woodcliff Lake let’s go shopping!
I LOVED this. Especially the black and white touch in the intro! You look so cute. Can't wait to see the next one! We have that same mickey mouse plush, lol. The music is super fitting too!
+Schell Lifestyle thank you!!
Your music is so fun!! This was an super awesome twist on the normal clean with my videos here on UA-cam!
+The HomeSchool Hippie thank you! The music is my fav too!
This was such a great idea! I am so glad we have dishwashers now a days! I would hate to not have one!
+Shawna Rae omg same! I run mine every day 🙊
I don’t have one. I so grateful to have food to eat. Sometimes I think, “ boy am I sick of washing dishes.” I have a family of six soon to be seven. My husband doesn’t believe in paper plates. So a lot of time he washes the dishes.
Love this Carolyn!! This was so unique and so fun to watch! I can’t imagine cleaning all dolled up everyday lol. The music and intro were a nice touch also! Looking forward to seeing your 2nd video!❤️
+Just Sydney thank you Sydney!! ❤️
Why a fun video!! I mean, cleaning like that while fully dressed and put together, omg! I wouldn’t have made it as a housewife in the 50s (leggings are a necessity in order to function lol) Looking forward to Thursday!
+Jovie's Home same!! One day was enough for me 😆
Your closet looks so neatly organized Carolyn❤
+Harleen G thanks I just redid it! You should have seen it before it was a disaster
Carolyn I love this video, yes I would love if you decide to make series of these. I was thinking when I was watching this how do South Asian moms clean lol, point is I had so much fun watching this.

+Ashley Hunt not without dishwashers!
What a cool idea 💡

Really neat idea ! Love this Video and Channel :)

I loved this, would you do this one again. It was so much fun watching you. Thank god we have dishwashers because that's not my favorite cleaning task. Loved those glasses on you.

💜💜
Omg! I love this video. This is so awesome. New subby here for sure. ❤️
Some people had dishwashers.
Hi first time see you.what vacuum you had?I need get a new one!will be ur new subscriber
Yes there dishwasher but you buy one you see people would buy the stuff but had put a down payment for it
PS what do you use for cleaning your appliances?
+Knitting in the Park if they are quite dirty I use an all purpose spray to get off any gunk and I use the weimans stainless steel spray to polish them!
@@ContemporaryMama hmm that's a good idea!
😍❤
How long did this take you?
+Kiwi & Rocky about 2.5 hours it it probably would have been quicker if I hadn’t had to move the camera around
Always wear an apron and gloves. There are so many germs when we clean. Try to protect yourself as much as possible.
You don't really know how to swip the floor. Oh.
The only thing "50's" here is your outfit.
And even that isn't very accurate. Akin to something you'd see as a party city costume as opposed to what clothes actually looked like.
@@atomicgoblin True☺️👍
