As a drummer of 63 years of age, the three most influential drummers to me; Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, and Billy Cobham. Billy is the only surviving one, but the guy is still a bad MF'er!
Alphonse Mouzon Dennis Chambers Billy Cobham Lenny white and Narada Michael Walden are the cream of the crop when it comes to African-American drummers these guys set the stage for big bad fast and aggressive drumming in a progressive Jazz that needed an injection of this mind-blowing drumming.
I fell out of touch with Cobham's career 3 decades ago. Like all world-class musicians, I knew he wasn't just replaying his hits, but instead was evolving with the times and changing the way he approached his past songs. I say all this to explain that - despite knowing the above - I'm happily surprised by this arrangement. It's totally fresh and new, and Cobham is still on top of his game. Love it!
Still in the pocket as ever. Took my girl to see him in Orlando the Carr? on Orange. This girl required lots of atttention that I could normally do but not Billy Cobham night. I was attentive to one thing and it was on the stage. He had those thundering basses over floor toms. Thanks.
@@GarthWatkins-th3jt i am enjoying him since the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ....and i met him after a very nice Concert here in Hannover ...Northern Germania ...
He is amazing the level of energy and how he keeps the groove second to none. I saw him before the pandemic at blue note revisiting crosswinds withe the likes of breaker at trumpet and an outstanding baboon keyboard etc. Honestly I agree he merits a better band much punch and more fidelity to the original composition
Retired professional drummer here, Cobham is a lot like Gadd imo, was extremely influential many decades ago, but fast forward to today and they haven't progressed or grown any as an artist, playing the same old patterns, fills and beats. If you disagree, I don't care, I respect your opinion, so respect mine please.🙏
Well, what artist still grows at 80? Or even at 60? Some indisputable examples, please? Having reached the point where what you play is the final version of your art shouldn't be judged negatively. Plenty of other people, younger people, can do new stuffs. As long as Gadd, Cobham, or any other old legend feels the urge to play, they shouldn't retire just because they don't produce anything really new.
I don't care if the drum set was backwards and inside out it's Billy Cobham and he's jamming on the one and annihilating his drums like he always has... and if you've never had the opportunity to see him live then you don't know what you're missing
