Lo'dochka. To pronounce it correct with the stress on the 1st syllable. It means 'boat' in translation. That is why only one half of the hot dog bun is used to keep it in the shape of a boat. Yes, it is very popular. I saw tries to repeat the success by other people in other parts of Belarus. But they all fail so far. The secret of Baranavichi lodochka still remains unsolved.

Those old Soviet trains we’re neat. It makes me think about what a crazy massive undertaking it must have been to build railway tracks from the St Petersburg and Moscow area of Russia that reached all the way to Vladivostok. Pretty epic when you think of it.

I'm glad you've visited the land of my ancestors. My grandfather was from town Liakhovichi, Baranovichi rayon. He started life as labourer in a rich Polish mansion (it was part of Poland until 1939), fought in Civil war in the 1st Konnaya/Cavalry Army, and after WW2 reached the rank of General.
Baranovichi, like all of Belarus, suffered terribly during WW2. All Jewish population of this town - 30,000 people - were put in ghetto by Nazis in 1942 and killed.

When you mention that western Belarus was the territory of Poland until 1939, I ask you to add at the same time that since 1921, as a result of the Riga Peace Treaty, after the armed seizure of this territory by the Poles. In 1939, western Belarus was returned to the historical homeland of the Belarusians.

No it isn't part of Kraków cuisine Khosrow. I lived three years in Kraków and 5 years in Poland. This way of doing it is not part of Polish cuisine at all. All hot dogs there are standard. The standard Polish street food is Zapiekanka or else typical international stuff like kebabs and ordinary hot dogs and burgers. This way of serving a hot dog is so unique, it is a genuine reason to go to Baranowicze tbh.

Because of little people use cafes and restaurants to have a bite. Plus a tax burden of 70% of income for these places. Then when Belarusians happen to be in LT or PL cafes, they traditionally order salad, soup and 2nd meal like meat with some garnish. Then they desperately realize that one of those is enough to get full.
