Guitar lessons going back near 100 years good stuff
I was the technical director for this TV show. It was recorded on March 27, 1979 for Iowa Public TV.
Mr Ellis has a steamrolling Capo on that Gibson! This is a joy. Three total musicians.
I love these guys. These folks have officially put Jazz on the map for me. Not that I didn't think Jazz was cool; I just slept on it for awhile. And Jazz can be a bit scary too because it's baffling how they're able to stay together doing all that they do.
These five guys are locked IN! The tag team work by the guitarists is awesome! And I'm here for ALL of it!! 😁😁😁
So good so sweet like honey, Great guitarist. Thancks very much.
MUCHAS GRACIAS POR ESTA MARAVILLOSA MUSICA
The three guitarists are beyond great, but Joe Byrd on bass is wonderful, and the drummer is just fine, too. And when you consider what 95% of the public today thinks is music, doesn't it make you furious?
indeed
Agreed
Very much so!
Ehhhh......I wouldn't say it makes me furious. Lol. I listen to just about everything.
These guys are nothing short of incredible. These folks are one of my key forays into jazz, and I'm here for it! These guys are the goats.
That said, music today is kinda awesome to me. I can get down with The Great Guitars, without question. But I've also been able to get down with some Yeat, Tate McRae, Lil Wayne, Arianna Grande, and Lil Tecca, among others. I listen to everything! 😂😂😂
Also, look up Cory Wong, Eric Gales, Kingfish Ingram, and Polyphia. Let them bless you. 🙌🙌🙌
@@Six3rdy always scouting for talent. Thanks.
I like this genre of jazz. The cameraman is obsessed with the picking hand. Guitarists tend to watch the other hand to see which notes are in cool chords and slick riffs.
Thanks a lot for your sharing. BARNEY KESSEL is not dead!

Great technique and expression
I was there behind the bar at the Maintenance Shop in the basement of Student Union at Iowa State University during this concert performing my "mixologist" responsibilities. We saw so many great groups there from 1976-1980 and it would be great if Iowa Public Television (the sponsor) would post more of these videos. It was a real joy to hear and see so many legends of jazz and blues pass through Ames and play one or two nights there. Thanks for posting!
Masters of their genre. Sweet as honey.
This is such a great recording! You can see these players' picking hands up close in some shots and really get a good look at their picking technique!!! Praise for the cameraman!!
Yes. While my ear is not as jazz tuned as I wish, the guitar clinic in me agrees with your observation. I'm workin' on the ear.
Brazilian songs: 06:00 O Morro nao tem vez + 30:00 Meditation + 33:10 Carinhoso + 36:20 Agua de Beber .... after that ... Nuages 43:00 (Django Reinhardt)
This kind of music will always have a special place in my heart.

Saw them live in Montreal in the 80's. Fantastic show.
Thank you for posting this. I saw this on public television in 1979, have always remembered this amazing performance, but have not been able to watch it again since then.
Just so great to hear that. 👉👍👈
I have an LP record of these three legendary guitarists,...it's just wonderful.
Awesome!
Great recording of some of the greatest jazz guitar player ever much thanks for uploading this 👍👍👍👍👍
énorme Charlie Byrd
absolutely brilliant
This video is excellent. The best rendition of 7 come 11. Herb and Barney are on fire in that one. I prefer it over the one with Joe Pass.
Such joy to hear and watch great music being made. Thank you for bringing this our way.

Does anyone know what is going on at the headstock of Herb’s guitar? It doesn’t appear to be a capo, but is it and what is it doing? These guys really are GREAT guitar players! So thankful this was recorded and posted. It is one thing to hear, but another to hear and see…wow!!
I think it a mute that gives a soft sweet sound.

What is the name of the second tune?
Look at the setlist in the description every tune is there even with timestamp.
@@notorious.shadow The setlist is pretty wrong - the name of the second tune is Favela by A C Jobim
