Very simple and high quality engine. Sand/dust in the intake air has ruined the rings in many off highway engines. You can never spend too much money replacing air filters in these little engines. They can’t tolerate being ran hot due to stopped up radiators. Heads will crack if they get too hot.
Your alternator/generator is permanent magnet, rather than an electromagnet. The magnets are causing the cogging, as they're attracted to the steel laminations in the coils. Whether it's an alternator or a generator depends on if it's outputting AC or DC (before the rectifier/regulator). At a guess, It's putting out AC, just single-phase(2 wires) rather than the 3-phase of automotive alternators.
I understand your learning about engines you need to learn about making sure engine is in proper top dead center and timed correctly before disassembling., but please learn when you use a hand tool to install things and when not to use a Milwaukee driver..reason people cross thread stuff
