Met him in the late 60's. I had heard my parents talk about him since I was a child. He was a true legend.
yes sir
Any man that spends his life in poverty and still preaches the word of the lord is a Perfect Saint and my Hero. God Bless his precious soul.
*Absolutely! Amen.* 🤗 🙏
*And God Bless you my friend.* 💫💖
Amen
The Goat Man was the first story I heard when I moved here in 1982. Wish I could have met him.
Indeed, me too my friend
I remember seeing him in Manchester TN when I was probably 9 or 10 years old early 70s
It's a shame people felt a need to attack a harmless man and innocent goats....
May he rest in peace. Thank you for sharing this story with us. 🙏
Yes ma’am, he was such a kind soul
indeed it is.. unfortunately people are still doing so to homeless people.. no not all homeless people are good people or innocent but people randomly beat them up.. urinate on them while they sleep.. set them on fire.. all just for laughs
@Big iron88
EXACTLY! 🤦🤷🤦🤷
People are so cruel & evil😢..smh🙄
This story is a wonderful but heartbreaking one
❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔
It broke my heart at the very end of this video💔...abt sum1 stabbing goat man then I really got so sad wen he said they "slit the throats of sum of his goats." That really brought tears to my eyes.
😭😭😭😭
I jus do NOT understand people 🙄...wat was the reason for any of the cruelty they did to goat man & his goats!!!
🤷🤷🤷🤦🤦🤦
Awww, so sad to hear how cruel and mean people where to this man that never bothered anyone, he was just trying to spread the gospel.
Thanks for sharing and hope you have a blessed rest of your weekend.
Indeed- people
Can be the cancer of the earth
I lived in Athens Tennessee every time he came thru my dad would take my brother and I to see him, the good old days.
Ah, the good ole days
He passed through Monroe and Conecuh County, Alabama enough that several generations of people remember seeing him over the years.
man, seems he walked everywhere
I saw The goat man as a young child in north Georgia. What a sight!!!
Awesome
I can remember this man when I was a little kid.
awesome!
As a child I first met this gentleman when he passed thru my Hometown of Milledgeville,Georgia....My Grandfather always allowed him to stay a few days on his property and we fed him and us kids always were fascinated with his stories and the chance to play with his baby goats.....he was truly a part of a Lost Americana, but, still remains one of my earliest childhood memories.
Thanks for sharing this
That's pretty cool!
How awful that he was beaten up and his goats attacked. What's wrong with people.
I have to admit, this story made me a little bit sad...I can not believe someone would attack this man and his goats. It had to be satan, because he was doing the Lord's work. I admire that the Goat Man lived his life the way he wanted and didn't care how people thought of him. We need more people like him. I have no doubt in my mind that God was waiting for him to say, "Well done MY good and faithful servant!" Thank you for sharing this story... it's one that will stay with me for a very long time.💝💘😔
Yes indeed- it was a very evil act
My mother, who is in her mid 80's, & her parents saw the goat man many times years ago. I live in the mountains not far from Chattanooga, & it made me sad & mad that somebody in my neck of the woods would do that 2 an old Christian man. Ur rite, it was the work of the devil to stop God's Word.
@@sambarnard9628 indeed my friend
@@sambarnard9628 the Devil thought he had stopped God’s Word when killed Jesus, but we know how that ended.
I’m sure the Goat Man entered into heaven with pure joy.
I read Voice of the Martyrs. A lot of hate for Christ and his followers all over the world.
What stings us, when things like this happen in the so called Bible Belt.
You are absolutely right.
I saw the goat man as a small child while traveling thru North Carolina. I still remember the smell. Being an animal lover I wanted to approach but my parents wouldn’t let me. No air conditioning in those days and the trip to Florida took 3 days. I think they didn’t want to smell me in the car. Still a good memory.
That smell was legendary
It is quite a shame that anyone would want to hurt the Goat Man, prejudice is an evil thing.
Thank you for the story of the Goat Man.
Indeed- lots of evil out there
I went to rural grammer school in East Tennessee. Every year the goat man would come by our school. It was such a big deal, the principle would let all the kids out of class to go outside and see the goat man. He would always stop and talk with the kids and answer questions. I had completely forgotton about him, until I ran accross this video. I could never understand why someone would attack this sweet old man.
💜
Met him one night in Resaca Georgia, he was camped along the old 41 highway at the civel war cemeratary, talked to him about two hours, that was about 1960.
*He would have been a very interesting man to talk to. I bet he had a lot of*
*stories.* 🤗
Wow, how cool was that!
You share such incredible stories! Imagine this man traveling the States in today's world!
Thank you !
I live not far from Chattanooga Tennessee and I can remember when the goat man came through Fort Oglethorpe Georgia that is where my grandmother lived thank you that is one memory I had forgotten about
Indeed my friend, thanks for watching and sharing your memories
As a child I remember the goat man well, as he traveled thru Macon Ga. my hometown. It was always, a treat to see him with his goats and that old wagon. I remember seeing him on Jeffersonville Rd. I asked him what he did when it got cold, he said he would just pull up another goat! RIP Jess!
Amen my friend
I had a dream about an old appalachian family that raised goats. They were very close to nature and in this dream I was trying to let a daddy longleg spider outside. The spider was strong and fought me to come back in. When I got frustrated, the old man said "we should say grace" and I started praying. ❤ 🐐
I vaguely remember hearing about him... Thanks for the rest of the very interesting story ✌️😎👍❤️
Yes ma’am
Daddy took Sis & me to see him long years back; yes, the goat odor was strong. He was camped behind a small store (outside Lexington, SC) where 278 & #1 met. Daddy's sister remembered seeing him travel up 278 toward Leesville, SC - she said the billy goats would push the wagon going up some of those steep hills. Husband remembers him camping on their place in Redan, GA. Yes, he sure got around. Rumors were that he was a rich eccentric; that his wife would meet him on some of his trips.
Enjoying your "stories".
Thanks so much
I met the goat man many times when I was a kid.
He was always extremely nice to us kids that would go up, pet the goats and follow him aways through town.
Later in the early 1990's I used to travel each week along the highway where he lived in his bus.
The bus, like his wagon, was very distinctive.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your story, I enjoyed reading it, god bless
You asked if I remembered The Goat Man, well yes I do. Right now I’m 78 years old living just on the outskirts of Chattanooga, Tennessee in Rossville Georgia. When I was about 16 years old, I lived in Adairsville , Georgia. The Goat Man came through our town and had decided to take a rest just north of Adairsville, on old 41 Hwy north. I remember going to see what all the ruckus was about and why everyone was talking about him being in our area. I remember how the goats smelled and was very concerned for him. Not necessarily for his safety but what he was going to eat, take a bath, get food for his goats and stuff like that!Just wanted you to know I enjoyed your video!!
Thanks for sharing this memory
I remember my dad telling me stories about the goat man. When he come through Summerville GA. years before I was born. From the stories. It sounded like the goat man was a pretty interesting man.
indeed my friend, I would have loved to have met him
This guy was in Cleveland a lot, very cool story!
Thanks my friend
Cleveland Tennessee, or that other one in Ohio?
So interesting to hear and learn about thanks
Yes ma'am, thanks for watching and commenting 😊
Thanks for sharing this story man much appreciated man interesting video
Thanks Cade
Your welcome man
The Goat Man came through Cleveland Tennessee when I was growing up in the 60s.
how cool!
He would park his goats in front of my uncle's store in westville fl. He always grew a crowd where ever he went.
Thanks for sharing that Sarah
I just will never be able to understand why anyone wants to hurt someone that isn't hurting others. They will surely answer for it when their time comes. This man hopefully lived his life to the fullest the way he wanted. I hope he is in Heaven with Jesus.
Amen
I remember seeing him on the side the highway somewhere between Georgia and Tennessee when I was about 8 years old
💜
I remember distinctly the Goatman. My family lived on the Stateline of Al/GA on the main highway. To me,he was just a part of life,he would pass through every year. And he was a typical old Southern character. I didn't know he was assaulted and I can't imagine why because he was a harmless, old man.
Indeed- folks can be so cruel
He traveled on hwy 41 from Chattanooga to Nashville
I truly hope that whomever harmed this very harmless man, along with his goats, received a HUGE swift kick on their backside from Karma!
This wonderful and gentle man reminds me of another wonderful and gentle man - I think, but don’t quote me, this occurred almost at the same time, who was nicknamed “The Leather Man.” Both men never bothered anyone, and both lived a happily nomadic lifestyle.
Why must some people find it necessary to attack those who are not causing any harm, or trouble? Thank you for bringing this wonderful, gentle, and loving man’s story to us all. Like the old saying goes: “never judge a book by its cover,” and people, who never took the time to get to really know the man, judged him by his appearance than what he was like on the inside.
Well said, agreed
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Thank you, JD, for taking the time to read and reply to my comment. I’ve been binge watching your videos, and I’m loving every single one of them. I can easily envision everything that you narrate, and they’re such beautiful stories.
Thank you for bringing Appalachia to us!
Awesome story.❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
I meet the Goat Man in ‘85 at the “Million Pines festival” in Soperton Ga.
thats cool
Man I have not thought of him in years! He use to come through Dallas Ga when I was a kid! He would come through stay a day or two then we'd see him again a year or two later. Everyone would say the Goat man was back! Lol!
💜
Howdy- this is the first time I’ve ever heard about this gentleman. Thanks for sharing this. God bless
Yes indeed, a very interesting fella
There is a man in Oregon that does this on a smaller scale. He has a channel Free123 uses sheep , claiming the milk is much better. He is committed at spreading his message to have us all become a Shepard!
What’s his name
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Arron is his first no idea about last I did get the channel name a bit wrong it is "home free 123".
I have a picture my mother took when we met him near Virginia on a trip to see my grandparents.

I remember seeing him, his goats and wagon in a small town in north Florida near the Alabama/Georgia line when I was apx 5 years old. Seems the goats had bells round their necks. He was at a station just up the road. That has been 60+ years ago
Thanks for sharing your memories
Live and let live

I have seen him many times here in Georgia
I think he lived there
I was blessed with seeing the goat man twice when I was a child in Lenoir city TN.
I live close to there
I saw him in Vonore, TN
Awesome story JD. Wished i could've met the goat man. I bet he had some wonderful stoies to tell.❤
Thank you Judy!
I remember seeing the goat man from childhood though my teenage years. So many people look forward to him coming to our community. Many of us would take him fresh baked goods, breads, fried fruit pies was one of his favorite. He drank the goat milk most of the time if he didn't have food. He also would gather wild food and plants for medicine for him and his goats. Occur there was some who didn't want him around. But many adults and specially the children love seeing him. The first year he didn't come into our community. The local newspaper owner started to investigated. And everyone was sad to find out he wasn't traveling anymore because he had been injured so bad. But the newspaper owner did receive an address were we could send him postcards. Im sure he wished after awhile that he hadn't okay to give his address. Time went on and postcards were returned. We found out he had passed away. We still after all these years remember and bring up the goat man in our history channel on UA-cam. Overton and Clay counties in Tennessee. He was a gentle and respectful man. And we always had some apples for him and his goats.
Thanks for sharing that
Wow! That's a neat story!!!
I know- he was such a sweet man
I fondly remember when The Goat Man came through Monterey, TN. Maybe in the 60’s?
Thants great- it’s amazing to see how far he traveled on foot with goats
I remember him stopping in campton ga near Monroe Ga at my house he was nice ask my if he stay two or three days I remember him cooking in a pot more like a soup he washed some clothes and bath in the creek there my dad gave him a little feed for the goats best I can remember he stop 3 or 4 times after that people would stop and have a picture made
Thanks for sharing my friend
What a wonderful story, and man! I would have loved to meet him and his goats 🐐
Thank you 🙏
His was, indeed, a life well lived.
People can be so cruel but he was Gods own! 🥰 and I think he was ready to meet his God! Another great story.
Indeed- people are the cancer of this earth- he was a good man
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I have to agree, not all, but still too many! And definitely not you!
Another amazing story, what a sad end though people can just be cruel..he lived a long life that's for sure
Lots of evil in this world
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller +Unfortunately there is, you'd think by now people would of matured and learned to be kind to all.

Спасибо! Какая удивительная и красивая история, очень жаль, что так трагично закончилось его путешествие с козами. Очень добрый человек и в сердцах людей оставил о себе добрую память. И его козы просто замечательные.

Yup- that was his home base
My Paw used to take us to Marrietta Ga when he would come through
Awesome

Oh yeaaa Great story of a man of God!
I had my own goat named Pepito !
He was my best friend !
We grow together!
But one day pepito got killed by a car.
Ever since I never wanted to have more friendly pets.
But between us there's not a healthy milk like goat milk 😕 🤔

Ah the goat man never got to see him but i remember my parents talking about him and read about everytime theres was newpaper article about him here in houston county ga.
Someone wrote a song about him
Its here on youtube its called goats
In the wagon
Ive forgotten where his property was located here in ga. But he owned property and had a son
Years after the goatman passed his son was found dead on they property with a bullet wound in the chest
Lastly theres an actual video of the goatman here on youtube its appears to be an 8mm recording
And its low quality video but it appears as if the goatman is doing some sort of repair to his wagon
Thanks for uploading this the goatman is one of the people that shouldnt be forgotten
Thanks for all those history tid bits
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller hey i went an found an article online about albert gene mcartney the goatmans son the article
Was written in 1983 it mentions alberts murder
Ches mcartney had already went into the nursing home but albert gene was still living on theyre bus
police seem to think alberts murder was a gang initiation he was shot in the chest while in bed by a .22 bullet he did manage to run and attempt to hide but was shot a second time and that one done him in
Also the article made it seem as if albert gene may have been slightly retarded or afflicted with some other mental illness
But also says he was a harmless gentle soul of a person

My dad told me of seeing this guy
Seems he went everywhere
Such a sad ending to a good man who only meant good horrible but anyway thanks a lot man you're all right
Thank you my friend
What makes ppl to be so cruel?! If the ending of this story doesn't anger you & make your heart ache for the poor Goat Man then you have no heart. I can't imagine being that cruel, heartless, & evil towards another human being that's done nothing to you & in addition to also being the same way towards innocent animals as well. Thank you for telling this story though.
He was a good man
Iv read of him in the foxfire books good story.
Thanks for watching my friend
I remember when he passed through Columbus GA
Awesome!
Go to a channel called 123homefree he is doing this with sheep. When I saw his channel I thought of the goat man. Up here on the cumberland Alvin c york is our local hero and the goat man passed through this region.

I couldn’t listen to the last 40 seconds. There’s a lot of evil in this world and I suspect his haters were extremely jealous of his happiness and free spirit. May the Goat man and his beloved goats forever Rest In Peace and allowed to roam without harm or hatred.
Indeed, there is real evil in this world
I’m an empath and free spirit myself. For two years, I had a reg job and money for a house after splitting up with my fiancé, but I had two elderly dogs. I couldn’t abandon them at that point and no one would rent to us. I even offered to pay 6 months ahead and finally, we found a home for the last year and half of their lives. Like the Goatman, we visited many states (not as many as him, lol) but they were well traveled. Anyways, being homeless was the best thing to ever happen to me. I learned how to be grateful for everything and stopped wanting.
God bless Appalachian Story Teller and I listened to the end today.
Very much like John the Baptist.
👍
Why can't people just let others be? Damn shame.
Amen
Appalachia is not where The GoatMan was from. He was from Jeffersonville Georgia in Central Georgia.
indeed, he roamed all over Appalachia and retired to Georgia. Thanks for your kind words my friend
I live in Twiggs County between Macon and Jeffersonville,Ga. and that's where I remember him from as well.
Did you know goat meat is delicious?? A little tougher than lamb but has a better flavour. In olden times it was known as the poor man's cow and early settlers had lots of them for milk and stew I guess too.
😮
He's partial to the purdy ones.
😂
Well there is definitely a place in hell for those responsible in Tennessee that did him, and his goats that harm.
Well said
Lots of folks in the comments discussing who would do something so terrible to a man just living his life against the grain. I'd look to the folks making a buck off christ as most modern "churches" do. The biggest threat to their heretical way of life would be a man living closer to the way Jesus did without the pomp and circumstance provided by a nice suit and well-fed congregants.
Live Free Or Die !
💯
Damn hateful people working for Satan that attacked that poor man. No need to rob him, he had nothing.
People nowadays that work for the Lord and are loud about it are always getting attacked. Just last week Mar Mari Emanuel was stabbed while giving a sermon. He’s recovering well, “praise the Lord”, but still shouldn’t have been stabbed like that.
Be prepared to meet thy God indeed!
