Trump called Veterans losers & suckers, told McCain he was not a hero for being captured, the 20 year retirement is gone, we could always go anywhere for healthcare nothing new. This man is almost eighty years old, his mind is sharp and clear and full of wisdom his heart is full of joy. He knows who he is and what he stands for. These are things money will never buy. He is a very rich man .

You mentioned how poor Appalachia is a couple of times trying to get him to talk about how hard it is to live there....didn't phase him....he's not poor, He grew up rich in memories and a simple life.
Ive lived in East Kentucky my whole life. Here’s the facts. There are no middle class folks here. Youre either coal mine owner rich or youre coal miner middle class. The average miner here makes 90 grand a year. They work so many hours that when they get off they go apeshit and spend tons of cash in local businesses. I am part owner in a local tattoo shop in Pikeville Kentucky. We are the heart of Appalachia. In a predominantly rural area, Pikeville is booming. The college with its med schools, tons of other courses of study and their willingness to give out tons of athletic scholarships make a very diverse population. On top of the athletic folk, there are the med students. This adds a lot of Indian, Muslims, Europeans and various other American influences to our collective whole. Pikeville is a very diverse town. Sir, as a native Appalachian American, i ask you to show the positive in our community. This man is a perfect example of what i consider “positive”. I know that you’re just showing reality when you show the methican American element of our culture, but, please continue to show this type of hillbilly. The truth is this, theres more good than bad in these hollers.

I could listen to his stories all day. lol. He reminds me of me grandfather I lost 3 years ago. Pepaw would tell stories like this guy. Miss him lot. My family is from Kentucky too. I currently live in Ashland.
These are my people. I live in southeast ky and have my entire life. To me there is no place better
I would like to go, is it dangerous? I am amazed by the mountains, but i don't know if racism is a thing over there.

If there were no more food at the grocery stores or medicine at the drug stores...I'd me dead in 3 months.

I’ve driven through Appalachia many times. The closest gas stations are 30 miles away spread apart. There is NOTHING up there except Timber Rattlers, Copperheads, and Moonshiners. The only way to get supplies is driving into town which can be MILES away. Driving down those 7% grades is a little nerve wrecking and god forbid you get caught in that mountain fog in which you can’t see headlights 4ft in front of you. The mountains are a rough environment to live in

I’m from Atlanta and live in Prestonsburg Ky that’s definitely true for over 90% of the people I’ve met here for sure

This is the kind of man we should all listen to. One of the happiest men you’ll meet. Poor, yes, but he clearly understands what truly makes a person rich.
These people will have more money that we'll never know about. Buried in deep freezers incased in concrete.

But otherwise absolutely, he seems like a very wise old timer, probably has hours and hours worth of stories to tell and wisdom to share, makes me wish I had my grandfather here to pick his brain. He passed when I was 12

Poor is so relative. He has a home in the hills and loved it enough to stay.
I’m visiting Harlan county because it’s where I was born and we just met Gary coming down the side of the road to Evarts. He was so friendly and kind. His buddy who was with him said “that’s mountain man!” And told us how he was famous on UA-cam and now I’ve discovered one of my favorite UA-camrs made a video about my people from where I’m from. What a small world. Love to see my hometown getting some attention and the kind people of my hometown made being the kind and friendly folk they are. Just love this video. ❤

Being “poor” is a relative term (not having what you need or not having what others have). This man has all he needs, he appreciates what he has and everyone around him is the same. He is rich in everything that matters!

I LOVED this interview (I’m Appalachian too, WV.) After college we moved around the country, lived in cities etc then returned home to the mountains to raise our children like most Appalachians do. God bless you Mark Laita for bringing so much positive attention to Appalachian people, we appreciate your work SO much ❤

@Fred Garvin ... Very true. I grew up in southern VA and what this man is saying resonates like crazy. I didn't know we were "poor" until we moved away when I was 11. We lived off the land and had everything we needed. I got my first job when I was 6, raking leaves and picking pecans for the neighbors. I'm 39 now and been working ever since. Good, good times. Wouldn't trade it for nothing.

The interviewer mentioned "poor" a few times. This man has had a richer life than a lot of folks with big bank accounts for sure.
You hear a lot about poverty but you’d be surprised at the older men around here that can drop $50K cash on a brand new F-150. I live the next county over from this man.
The interview needs to speak with an anthropologist on how to do respectful interviewing (ethical ethnographies). Even if you don’t have money, no problem be likes to be called poor. It seems as if the interviewer isn’t listening at all to the responses and simply has an agenda of pointed questions. Good interviewing isn’t just asking thoughtful questions, it’s about listening. If he was listening he might have had encouraging comments and better, more relevant follow up questions. These people aren’t here for our amusement, to be gawked at like a circus act or animals in the zoo. To the interviewer, do your homework, learn more about properly interviewing and be more respectful.

That old man has more knowledge than most people today. You can tell that was a tough old man, but you can also tell he has a heart of gold. The world 🌎 would be a better place if we grew up like this old man did.
I live in a prosperous part of the world with a lot of wealthy folk and I can tell you most people who arn’t one thousandth as wise or happy as this man.
This man is a history lesson in himself. Absolutely correct that you treat others how you want to be treated. I love that he pointed out to leave history in the schools we cannot erase it. What a wonderful man!!😇 Folks like this are so rare let us learn to be more like them. Marvelous Gems!!

This is one of the most interesting “interviews “ I’ve ever seen. I’d LOVE to sit with him for hours. No offense Mark, but Mountain Man didn’t need your questions! His stories are so RICH, nothing “poor” about this! This is proof that relationships with our elders are so important.

Almost sounds like the interviewer either wants to bring some false awareness of poverty and need in the life of this man or he is just too envious about how collected, peaceful, and happy this man is without today's so called "advancements". I don’t think the interviewer brings up “being poor” to be negative or to “bait” the people he’s interviewing, I honestly think he does it intentionally to show the majority of us viewers that being “rich” or “poor” is subjective and for a lot of people that may not have substantial financial resources can still feel and actually be rich. This man in this interview is rich, regardless of what he does or doesn’t have in monetary value. I wish I could relate, but materialism has destroyed my views and feelings of what being wealthy means. I’m sure I have more money and material possessions than this man has ever had, but I wish I had half of this man’s true wealth and happiness.

I’m damn proud my family roots are planted in Harlan, Kentucky. Even more proud to say that eastern Kentucky is my home. Like this man, I’ve been all over the country from coast to coast, as high as you can go from Michigan to the southern parts of Florida. No place is like these mountains.

I grew up poor, it was one of the best childhoods ever. We had neighbors who cared, friends who helped, and plenty of entertainment that cost us nothing. All we needed was a dryer drum and a good hill!
We used dry drums too for family and friend get togethers which was about everyday or atleast every weekend

People living in the Appalachian mountains may look poor but have lived fulfilling lives, growing up and working hard to provide for their families living off the land...life wasn't easy for them but it must have been worth it regardless of their circumstances...it's been great listening to their stories, thankyou for sharing.
It's worth more than city folk can ever know. We might not have much to the outsiders looking in but the love in our homes and sense of community we share with our neighbors make us some of the richest people in the world.

That's not an accurate characteristic of Mark. He did that on purpose to show us how wholesome these people are. Everybody is talking about how rich in character this man is and that's exactly why the interview was conducted the way it was.

I live in Appalachia. I am a proud, die hard Mountain Mama. I am college educated, hold 3 different degrees and work in medicine. But the things I've learned from the old timers, like how to hunt, kill, field dress and butcher my own meat, how to grow my garden and can my food, how to survive in these wild woods is the richest education I could've ever had. I routinely spend my time with my elders (I am 48 now) this man's age. This is wisdom, and it's dying. I will carry the mantle, as much as they'll pass on to me. I love my life best when I am barefoot with the sun on my shoulders, living as close to the earth as God intended.

@@alfredschnozzenstein1657 the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving will teach you everything you need to know about canning, in the absence of having an old Gramma to watch. My dad taught me how to hunt and field dress my kill, I learned a rough butchery from my anatomy clases in college,( where I had to skin every one else's cats because no one else in the class had grown up skinning wild game). There are many helpful reference books as well on the subject of wild foraging. IDK where you live, but my best advice is go where the game and land are. Find a piece of land with a water source and you'll be set no matter what comes.

I sincerely hope someone sits down with this man and writes down his memories for future generations to enjoy. That is a huge regret of mine- not writing down my mom’s and grandparents memories because now it’s too late.

I heard a memorable quote from mountain folk once saying, 'we didn't know we was poor until the government told us so'.
My favorite interviews are with the older Appalachian people. For the most part, they make me happy. Such gratitude for everything.
Dude Born in 1941... dude was raised to respect everyone. Don't steal, no drugs, don't steal and what he said whipping didn't hurt him, it made him learn to respect his elders and other's. Plus he said get a job. No excuses...
My Grampy was raised exactly the same. The only thing he did differently with his kids was ....he used no physical discipline. Somehow his boys still had the upmost respect for him....and they raised us without using their hands as well. They never had trouble with any of us being disrespectful, using drugs, stealing.....or ANYTHING.
I understand so many people believe that the reason kids are disrespectful today is because they did not have their asses beat, but I beg to differ. That being said.....discipline was VERY much a part of our lives. We just never needed whipped.
The problem with kids today is the device their parents are holding in their hands. It has robbed kids the attention of their parents.....
That is not how this man was raised....how my dad was raised...or how I was raised. With no attention comes...no real consistency or discipline.
I believe very much that consistent discipline is essential.

Live in Indiana but have visited family in southeastern Kentucky since being a young boy. Spent many summers down there as a kid. I’m born and raised right here in franklin county Va~ I’ve grown up around many men that was raised this way including my dad~ I can sit all day and listen to these stories drinking Budweiser from morning till night~ my favorite are the moon shining stories, no power steering, oversized windshield wipers, & bored out ashtrays!!! 😆
This man is from a different time a simple time a peaceful time. I would give anything to be able to sit with this man and walk around with him and listen to his whole story. Thankfully there are still people like this kind and generous. Nothing wrong with his way of life it’s a true way of living.
This guy isn't in the same category as the troubled person on the streets. He's salt of the earth.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how exactly he fits into the normal M.O., of broken people. I sure did enjoy his story though. I'm very happy to have heard it. I enjoy these interviews. My hearts breaks for most of the interviewees. Not this man. I feel nothing but respect, and pride for him.
People often mimic this accent as a joke or an insult, but I think its so wonderful. Love that twang.

I once spoke to a guy who grew up in a refugee camp in Sudan. They had food and water and a school. They played football and were safe. By our standards he was poor.
He said he never thought of himself as poor until someone told him he was. I love his outlook on life
This is a happy man with a simple life and smarter than one might think.
Listened to 10 minutes of this mans storries so far. He narrates his memories in a very pleasant and intriguing way.

I remember in my hometown in Virginia, there was this 70 year old man who owned a ton of the businesses in the area and was worth over a million dollars but still lived in the same old 1 bedroom cabin for his entire life and drove an old beat up pickup truck. He also donated a lot of his money to help support the local schools and people in the area. Looking at him out in public, you would have never known. They just don't care about flashy material objects.
That's the way to live.

I remember having breakfast in some cafe near a building site I was working on, anyway this guy comes in, I figured he was some homeless guy coming in for a free bowl of soup or something cause that's what he looked like, all rough and scraggy, anyway when he left my workmate leans over and says to me, 'that guy's a multi millionaire, last summer he took our boss to see the formula 1 racing grand Prix in Monte Carlo, he landed them on his boat from his helicopter in the harbour'

Tenn.Born in a log house in 1918!They lived off the land,went to the store for only coffee,sugar flour that's all.Made dresses and sheets out of flour sacks.Thier store was a root cellar 30 ft long .She lived to be 93 and cherished every minute!People like this are very humble ,they share to someone in need.The society of today can learn how to really be happy in life with the simple things !
This literally brought tears to my eyes. Listening to this man brings back so many memories of my Tennessee family who have all passed away. My favorite thing as a child was to sit around and listen to their stories. Thank you for this!
I'm jealous of this man's capacity for happiness. It's too bad society has forgotten the simple pleasures. I'm so grateful for everything I have. I'm going to appreciate it more from now on.
Everyone looks outside themselves to find happiness with people or things. The best things people need to learn is happiness with the self because we're prone to judging yourself if we trust what's outside of us.
Hearing a gentleman like this go on and on about his life experiences has to be one of my favorite things in life.

These Appalachian people series you've done is brilliant. I grew up on the edge of this, in a rural Appalachian town that was trying to modernize. I identify with the struggles and issues the younger ones faced, but watching him reminds me of sitting on Pappaws porch
Seems all the Appalachian folks have such genuine, sweet spirits and are truly happy, all while living in poverty ~> proof money doesn't buy peace and happiness. There's a lesson to be learned here.
As some one who was raised by those people, it's not squalor to them. It's there way of life.
I’ve visited Mountain Man twice recently and attempted to pay him both times, but like many of these Appalachians, he jumped back, refusing to accept money. I believe there are some important lessons we can learn from these people.
I live in the mountains of western North Carolina. I agree mountain people are some of the best people you'll ever meet. We grow our own food ever year and can it. Mark if you see this I want to do a interview so bad. Please come to western North Carolina. You will love it here.

The scenery. Cornbread. Omg. I still eat food like this cause my gramma raised me on it. She even gave me beeswax to chew for gum. Music and whittling and even later radios were entertainment. I loved their stories and the influence they had on my life. ❤
Great interview. I lived 30 years in Appalachia and heard old folks tell those same kinds of stories. They might be funny, sad, sweet, and even a little scary, but they're always educational. I could listen to him all day long.
He reminds me of my granddad. People had no electricity, worked hard, grew their own food and were just as happy as could be. I love listening to these stories. Proves money cant buy happiness. Sounds like a great life as a kid. Shoot sounds like an amazing life as an adult. I love everything about his story. I can close my eyes and it takes me there.

Its crazy how dreams change as you grow older. The older I get, the less I care about having material items. I just want to not worry about bills. If we won the lottery, I swear we would give so much away to help others. Its not just age, but I think having a disabled child and thinking how close I came to losing her! Im just thankful for life and my babies and grandbabies. It would be foreign to me living like this, and Im not a city girl, but would like to go a bit off the grid.

My Wife used to laugh at me because it seemed wherever I went, Older People would always end up striking up a conversation with me, and she would always ask me why I would never tell them I was busy and had to go, and I would always tell her that you never know if that simple conversation with me that day helped their day go a little better... I feel like this upcoming generation is forgetting what the Older Generations had to go through to survive, and it's sad.
Those that don't know people like this don't know America and it sure shows in DC these days. I have far more in common with this man than anyone in DC that's supposed to be representing us. If we had 435 people like this man in Congress we'd be much better off.

Another wonderful and inspiring video post. Cannot get enough of these short documentaries on how others live. Again, the most resounding theme is how happy people are and content to have what they have. So many of us should be grateful for what we have and to be able to see these videos!
Listening to this man and how he tells a story reminds me so much of my great grandpa who was born and raised in Harlan. He and my great grandma moved to Indiana back in the 70’s I think. I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with him until he passed in the 90’s. He was the kindest, happiest man I’ve ever known. They didn’t have much money, but that never mattered. Thanks for this video.
