  • Napier, New Zealand is the home of Art Deco in New Zealand. Myself and Don from Don's Family Vacation walked around Napier and saw the sights. Join us as we walk the street, get coffee, explore the super markert and more. Get immersed in Napier, new Zealand with this guided cruise tour.
This port day is part of my cruise to New Zealand on the Holland America Line MS Noordam.
This cruise and portions of this trip was paid for by Holland America Line.

This is my hometown! There so much to see and do, come on down and check it out! We are so very grateful for the trade these cruise ships bring. They have really helped the local economy. Usually at this time of year the weather is perfect but we have recently had a weather anomaly and most of summer has been wet and cool. In my whole life living here i have never seen anything like it. If you get a chance check out the Ahuriri Village Kitchen!

Napier was rebuilt in the Art Deco style after most of it had been destroyed in an earthquake in 1931. Fully licensed means they hold a license to sell the full range of alcohol. I love the collectible shop there.

About a month ago we too were walking the streets of Napier on a rainy day. We did a car trip around NZ (4 weeks about 3000 miles) after doing the Noordam Trans Pacific. I am so sad you had such terrible weather. We had rain but not a lot (even on the West coast). Thanks for the memories, the gardens were beautiful. I loved how the downtowns in so many NZ cities were so alive. We share a bit from both of you … live in FL but spend summers not too far from Ottawa.

No one in chat or even Tony or Don mentioned the famous "Napier Art Deco Week-End" Every February, the building you passed earlier "The Daily Telegraph" is NOT a newspaper building any longer but a mini museum where you can purchase for instance Art deco memorabilia pertaining to the Art Deco week-End, I'm an Aussie who visited back in 2008 and have never forgotten what a great week-end we spent at that time.

Tony, Wow, Napier is such a pretty little city for sure. I love the walkability and shopworthiness ( I just made that word up evidentially ~ according to spell check). I am 110% on board with the extinction of the dinosaurs theory. It would be amazing to have that on a t-shirt or a mug (consider some new LLL merch???). As for KFC, extra crispy, and if they sold a box of just the crispy bits I'd be a huge fan!! Thanks for the tour today. Continued safe travels.

I enjoyed this walking tour of Napier. Tony, you missed the golden opportunity to try a meat pie and those pies looked amazing, just as good as you get in Australia. When you get back to Sydney, don't even consider the Bridge Climb. The people you see climbing are on the easy part and to get there you will climb ladders and walk through tight spaces.

Before you leave nz and possibly never come back you must try the propper kiwi snacks! The must try things are whittikas creamy milk chocolate (best chocolate in the world that can be bought from a supermarket or dairy) and either Whittikas Lewis Road Creamery chocolate milk ( nz grass fed milk and best dairy in the world ). Also if u want kiwi potato chips, then 'Eta' ready salted or whatever flavour. You tried L&p thats good, even tho is was dry and not regular. Another great kiwi thing is fish n chips, theyre everywhere its cheap and tastey hot food. Dont let down us kiwi fans!!
