My friend & I met Yngwie at a record store signing for the Marching Out record. We were 15 yrs old. My buddy brought his Les Paul guitar for him to sign(beautiful guitar,I tried to stop him from ruining it with an autograph but he would not listen).Yngwie loved the guitar & was trying to buy it off of him but my friend said no.Yngwie signed it & told my buddy that the guitar will be worth a lot more money now that he autographed it.My buddies response? Yeah, but I think about how much it will be worth if you die in a plane crash.I was shocked that he said that to him, my buddy stood there with a stupid grin on his face,Yngwie busted out laughing & talked with us for another 10 minutes as the people waiting in line were getting impatient. As much of a prick that everybody thought he was back then, to us that day he was the coolest guy in the world. My #1 has also always been "I Am A Viking".
Good story. Yeah, my little brother met him as well I think during the same tour. They stayed at the same hotel after the show. His suite was right next to my brother's. He said he doesnt think Yngwie slept a wink. Partied all night. Definitely had plenty of nose candy.
Yngwie as a songwriter is underrated thank you for posting this Jeff and Pete, love your channel! My 10 favorite Yngwie songs Crash and Burn, Magic Mirror, Judas, Ill See the Light Tonight, Crystal Ball, Dragonfly, Dark Ages, Rising Force, Dont Let it End, Black Star
Yngwie Malmsteen for over thirty years was my all time favorite guitar player. Two years ago I really got into Deep Purple Ritchie Blackmore eras only and especially Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore has become my favorite in the past two years. The first time I heard of Yngwie Malmsteen is when I heard I'll See The Light Tonight back in 1987 when I was barely ten years old and fell in love with his guitar playing big time. I love everything he has done solo with Rising Force, Alcatrazz, and Steeler. If I was to do a top ten list off the top of my head and in no particular order. 10. Rising Force 9. Demon Driver 8. Liar 7. I Am A Viking 6. See You In Hell (Don't Be Late) 5. Trilogy Suite Op 5 4. Never Die 3. Braveheart 2. Riot In The Dungeons 1. I'll See The Light Tonight
Alcatrazz 'No Parole From Rock & Roll' is a masterpiece! I will never forget buying that album when it came out as an impulse purchase, not knowing who they were. My jaw fell to the ground as I was introduced to the magic of Yngwie!
Soldier without faith is a fantastic song! I met Yngwie at a record signing in some obscure record shop in Long Island New York back in the 80"s I seen him so many times but the first time was at L'Amours In Bayridge Brooklyn I had the Alcatrazz album first and then I got the Steeler album. I still have one of his guitar picks from a show I seen him with Talas opening Billy Sheehan at the Beacon Theater back in 85
Fine job, men! Mine: 10. Far Beyond the Sun 9. I Am a Viking 8. Rising Force 7. Now Your Ships are Burned 6. Jet to Jet 5. Disciples of Hell 4. Kree Nakoorie 3. Evil Eye 2. Anguish and Fear 1. Trilogy Suite Op. 5
10) Caught in the Middle 9)Fire in the Sky 8) Rising Force 7) Deja Vu 6) Faster Than the Speed of Light 5) Krakatau 4) Crying 3) You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget 2) Magic Mirror 1) Heaven Tonight
Odyssey was one of favorite albums too and I saw that headlining tour at The Palace, Albany. I wish Joe Lynn Turner and Yngwie did more together. JLT seems to bring commerial accessibility where ever he goes Too much for me in Rainbow but for Yngwie it was a good fit.
The best epic song that Yngwie wrote. Was in the trilogy album. No one had a song like that ever. The song is crying. YNGWIE show the melody, feeling, vibrato at his best. If you listen to that song. It shows with that song that he is an original and a inovator of electric guitar.
I saw Yngwie on Marching Out, Trilogy and twice on the Odyssey tour, both of which were very unique situations. The 1st time was the night before the Odyssey tour at Hammerjacks in Baltimore. Front Row in front of Yngwie! Close enough to touch his pedals (I did). The 2nd time Lita Ford was supposed to open for him at the Baltimore Arena but, she was a no show. Yngwie's roadie brought out an acoustic on a stand and placed it in the middle of the stage and announced that Lita wouldn't be playing and that Yngwie would entertain the crowd with an acoustic set before headlining the night! He was spectacular! He played classical pieces he knew for about a half an hour then he told us he was going back to have a couple of drinks and he'd be back to rock our asses off! They were awesome both nights! Funny thing about the other two shows. Mark Boals was with him on the Marching Out tour and Jeff Scott Soto was with him on the Trilogy tour. Never a dull moment! This is my top 10. There are lots of honorable mentions but, I'm going to keep those to a minimum on this one. 10) How Many Miles To Babylon (tied with) 10) Faster Than The Speed Of Light 09) Icarus' Dream Suite 08) Trilogy Suite op. 5 07) Blitzkrieg 06) Black Star 05) Far Beyond The Sun 04) Rising Force 03) Liar 02) Riot In The Dungeons 01) Anguish and Fear Honorable Mentions: Judas, Crystal Ball, Deja Vu, Evil Eye, Little Savage, Final Curtain, Fire And Ice, I'll See The Light Tonight, Hold On, Crying & Dreaming(Tell Me).
10. Icarus dream suite 9. On the run again 8. Magic mirror 7. Brothers 6. Soldier without faith 5. Liar 4. Rising force 3. Far beyond the sun 2. Trilogy Suite 1. Anguish and fear I kept changing this because it's really tough. Big yngwie fan and there's so much great music. Really all his music up until the 2000s hit was really awesome and worth checking out.
I met Yngwie during the seventh sign tour. They played Harpos in Detroit and me and my buddie went on his tour bus and got his autograph along with the singers. Very cool experience.
I'm surprised the; "ATTACK" album would've been mentioned. From beginning to end, a flawless perfectly balanced YNGWIE album. Many potential top 10 tunes. Specifically; "Baroque & Roll". Great episode! Love Jeff Young!!!
I saw Yngwie at a high school gym in Salinas Ca. I cant remember how many years ago and Keel opened the show and i remember seeing the guys from Keel at a liquor store loading what looked like all the beer they could carry into a shitty old van. Good times!

Pete Thanks for doing some Malmsteen! Jeff's a cool dude and I like your collaboration with him. I'm surprised I'm My Own Enemy didn't get an honorable.
A little known fact about "I am a viking" It was actually a stab at Graham Bonnet. Yngwie admitted that in an old magazine interview. If you listen to some of the lyrics you can hear how he didn't get along with him.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Yes I know. I've watched a bunch of your videos. I was just saying people often refer to best songs when they should be calling them their favorite songs. One is fact, the other is opinion of course. But it's all good.

Love another one guys..great comment Jeff on the Desert Song track so true saw Graham Bonnet in Swansea a few weeks back This video is about Desert Song & the time I jammed with Milli Vanilli. #gurlUknowitstrue

The guy has like 20 albums which makes this list whole hell of a lot harder 1. Dragonfly ~ Fire & Ice 2. Marching Out ~ Title track 3. Far Beyond the Sun ~ Rising Force 4. Faster than Speed of Light ~ Odyssey 5. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget ~ Trilogy 6. Sacrifice ~ Facing the Animal 7. Mistreated ~ Inspiration 8. Blue Lightning ~ Title track 9. Duf 1220 ~ World on Fire 10. Stand ~ Alchemy Honorable mentions Every song song off Fire & Ice Black Star
I saw Yngwie back in May of this year, and I was glad that he appeared healthy and happy. I like Yngwie all through his career, even more recent stuff. I do think some of Joe Lynn Turner's best work is what he did with Yngwie for Odyssey and Inspiration. Joe was a customer of mine at one of my jobs a few years ago, and we had some chats about his career. Joe felt Yngwie's own lyrics were lousy, but while I don't necessarily disagree, I do think he writes good vocal melodies that work with the music, even if the actual words aren't always the best. As to favorite songs, I'm not sure I can put them in order, but they would include: Leonardo, Marching Out, Icarus Dream Suite, Fire & Ice, Live to Fight Again, Cherokee Warrior, Valhalla, Anguish & Fear, Another Time Another Place, and his cover of In the Dead of Night.
Beautiful Strat! Does it stay in tune though if you use the tremolo bar a lot? I see that it doesn't have a floating tremolo system. Still looks like an amazing guitar and probably has amazing feel. Cool that Jeff picked "Light Up the Sky" Van Halen cover Malmsteen did with Dug Pinnick. That whole Little Guitars Van Halen tribute album is amazing. I read in an interview George Lynch didn't really want to do "Panama" but he was pushed to do that song. He wanted to do a heavier VH song. He said he was sick with the flu when he was in the studio recording that. He had a blanket wrapped around him and had a 100 something fever. Cover still sounds great to me. Jani Lane did the vocals. Back on topic: I love a lot of Malmsteen tunes up through the "Fire and Ice" album. You guys have pretty much named all the ones I like. I like others too. I played the first 4 albums the most, but also listened to "Eclipse" and "Fire and Ice" quite a bit too. I haven't really followed him that much after "Fire and ice" so I'm not familiar with the later records.
Great choices but I would have to put Leonardo from the Alchemy album in there somewhere. Mark Boals vocals on that song are absolutely amazing - as jawdropping as Yngwie's solo in my opinion.
Leonardo from the Alchemy album. That whole album is great despite the tact the production could have been better. Mark Boals was Yngwies best singer imo.
Eclipse and Fire & Ice are my favorite Malmsteen albums. Facing The Animal comes third. Yngwie never had a better singer than Goran Edman, in my opinion. Cheers from sunny France!!
I'd say JSS, JLT, Goran Edman, Mats Levin, Tim Owens, and Mark Boals are the best singers he ever had. Not to knock Mike Viscera or Doogie White, who are fine singers as well, but those others are the cream of the crop.
Eclipse is easily in my top five favorite Yngwie Malmsteen solo albums. I was barely 12 years old when it came out and I listened to your very often and still do. Yngwie's first four or five singers were all Phenomenal to me. The others were good too.
Great list guys. Great to see Jeff a true shredder offer his opinion. Oveture 1383 Leviathan underrated tracks. Love yngwie but I agree ..some pretty bad stuff(not the guitar playing but the songs)
I'll always find value in Yngwie's albums, even if he insists on producing and playing/singing everything himself these days. I wish he would do something with Graham Bonnett before time makes it impossible, but Yngwie will always be near and dear to my heart. The first 5 albums or so are classic to me (plus Alcatrazz; Steeler is a bit of a bad fit with Ron Keel IMO), and I lost touch with Yngwie a bit in the 90's, but I caught back up and loved his stuff from Facing The Animal up through the Ripper stuff. Last few have been spotty, but I understand the limitations of the music industry today with trying to put together a top band (many of whom may not live in the same country) vs hiring a touring band for support. I do wish he wouldn't push the whole band into the corner of the stage, while hogging 3/4 of the stage for himself, but that Yngwie ego is a big part of how he got to be as good as he is I guess.
No specific order: Dragonfly,Black Star,Don't Let It End,Deja Vu,Soldier Without Faith,Bedroom Eyes,Dream On w/RJD,Far Beyond The Sun,You Don't Remember/I'll Never Forget,Amberdawn. Unique,classically-inspired guitarist that has benefited from some of the "Cream" vocalists. JSS JLT Goran Edman Mike Viscera. Yngwie changed the game;in the day....his talent overshadows the ego & sometimes sloppy technique - in favor of speed.
Me too! The whole album is spectacular and all of them are better than the Alcatraz stuff. I was into Yngwie from the very beginning in '84 and I wasn't into the pre-Rising Force bands other than to hear Yngwie's solos. The songs weren't very good. His playing was amazing though. I've always disliked The tone of Graham Bonnet's voice. We used to call him "Nails" because he sounded like nails on a chalkboard.
@@patriotpizzaman absolutely!! I have hated Graham Bonnets singing for a long time. I have been able to tolerate his singing a little bit these past few years but I am still not a fan of his singing. The Alcatrazz album No Parole For Rock N Roll has some of Yngwie's best guitar playing. I also love his guitar playing on the Steeler album, but I am also not a fan of Ron Keel's singing either but I can tolerate a little more than Graham Bonnet's.
Not in order. 1. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget 2. Black Star 3. Trilogy Suite 4. Rising Force 5. Crying 6. Icarus Dream Suite 7. Fire 8. Queen In Love 9. Magic Mirror 10. Dark Ages
Jeff Young needs to rejoin Megadeth!!! He AND Marty Friedman need to rejoin and do another Megadeth album with Dave. Or if not that at least another Megadeth album with Jeff Young. He got unfairly fired from Megadeth back then.
Haven't seen him live in many years. Back in the 80s and early 90s his live sets were still entertaining, but yeah, I've heard that about recent tours.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Sorry Pete....but I have to say....saw Malmsteen warm up for AC/DC....Fly On the Wall tour.....his playing was incredible as far as speed and technical virtuosity....but the songs and vocals just weren't that great.....Angus blew him away under a pentatonic avalanche of doublestops and bends and non-whammy bar vibrato.....Chuck Berry duck walking to absolute stick in your mind forever rock anthems....simple heavy chord progressions with identifiable vocals....for the headbangin rock masses.....of course....no one could touch Malmsteen with speed...scales....technical ability...
Although I own and enjoyed the albums he did with Alcatrazz as well as the first 5 Rising Force albums,I can't listen to "wheedly, wheedly" shredders like Yngwie anymore. .His soul-less,fretboard acrobatics impressed the hell out of me 30-something years ago, even if most of his lyrics were pretty poor.( I know, English is not his first language ) .Today "all speed, all the time" sweep-picking bores me silly. I recognize the titles of a lot of the songs mentioned here, but would only be tempted to hear 2 or 3 of them again
Jeff's cover of Yngwie's BIGFOOT is on YT somewhere - pretty impressive. Otherwise, I'd ordinarily be puzzled how someone with the good taste to enjoy 10CC and the Tubes could sit through one Malmsteen album after another.
I was blown away by him in the mid 80's, but he was repeating himself by the early 90's and I lost interest as better players came along. But I cannot deny his massive influence and originality when he first hit the scene.
The first 3 albums are his best work. I did not like Odyssey at all, despite the good vocals of Turner. Everything after that is average, at best. It's hard to fault his leads because he's that damn good but the songwriting overall is weak.
Odyssey was outstanding! Rising Force, Bite the Bullet, Riot in the Dungeons, Faster Than the Speed of Light, Deja Vu, Krakatau. What's not to like? There isn't a bad song on this album!
@@patriotpizzaman Sorry but it pales in comparison to Rising Force and Trilogy. Marching Out is the weakest of those three but that for me is far better than Odyssey. It was a misstep in his career.
@@TheTruth-pl3mk I guess that's why they make Fords and Chevys bro ;) I thought the song writing on Odyssey was the best of the four and I liked the others way more than most people. I was an absolute Yngwie fanatic. I listened to those albums day and night ! The songwriting on the first three had the language barrier. To be fair, Joe Lynn Turner is my favorite singer from the early eighties and I listened to his Rainbow outings with equal fervor. So, when my favorite guitarist and my favorite singer teamed up, I was ecstatic! Have you heard them on the Deep Purple tribute? Their version of Lazy is epic! How about the Inspiration album collaborations? Pictures of Home and Demon's Eye were absolutely ferocious! .
@@patriotpizzaman Hey, I've got nothing but praise for JLT as a songwriter and vocalist, he's top notch. That's why so many great guitarists have turned to him at various moments over the years. And Yngwie? Well, words can't describe his talent and ability on guitar. The two of them together could've yielded a tremendous album. Perhaps if they'd done another 2 or 3 after Odyssey, they would've gelled more and the results could've been epic. Like you said, apples and oranges. Both great, totally different but one person loves one and the other hates it, vice versa. That's life. Are you into Vinnie Moore? Richie Kotzen? Cacophony, Racer X, Tony Macalpine, all the Shrapnel stuff. That's mostly what I'm listening to these days, along with some old-school UFO and MSG.
@@TheTruth-pl3mk I love Richie Kotzen, Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine! I'm a huge Schenker fan too. Just about any UFO too. Even non-Schenker albums rock. Vinnie's time in UFO was pretty good. Have you listened to Red Zone Rider? How about Black Country Communion? Rival Sons?

Love another one guys..great comment Jeff on the Desert Song track so true saw Graham Bonnet in Swansea a few weeks back This video is about Desert Song & the time I jammed with Milli Vanilli. #gurlUknowitstrue

I'm not familiar with any of Malmsteens work, but when Jeff mentioned 1984 and animal farm it peaked my interest, I'm up for anything Orwellian!
hahah! there ya go! :) #truthsells #butwhosbuying
The guy has like 20 albums which makes this list whole hell of a lot harder
1. Dragonfly ~ Fire & Ice
2. Marching Out ~ Title track
3. Far Beyond the Sun ~ Rising Force
4. Faster than Speed of Light ~ Odyssey
5. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget ~ Trilogy

Honorable mentions
Every song song off Fire & Ice
Black Star
No Black Star? So many great songs to choose from. Great lists.
You guys have to check out “All Opposable Thumbs” and “Enigma Suite”. Those tunes are on “Sonic Winter” by Johansson.
Great choices but I would have to put Leonardo from the Alchemy album in there somewhere. Mark Boals vocals on that song are absolutely amazing - as jawdropping as Yngwie's solo in my opinion.
Yngwie does sing on the World on Fire album
Hi Pete, pls do some classic album war include one of Caravan's album : ) I'm so curious about this one.
As a slight aside there was a gag that Deep Purple once told. What's Swedish for support band.......Yngwie Malmsteen!
Leonardo from the Alchemy album. That whole album is great despite the tact the production could have been better. Mark Boals was Yngwies best singer imo.
I used to play Far Beyond the Sun at 45 RPM for faster guitar. Now I don't have the turntable and the LP anymore.
Eclipse and Fire & Ice are my favorite Malmsteen albums. Facing The Animal comes third.
Yngwie never had a better singer than Goran Edman, in my opinion.
Cheers from sunny France!!
Jeff Scott Soto was damn good
I'd say JSS, JLT, Goran Edman, Mats Levin, Tim Owens, and Mark Boals are the best singers he ever had. Not to knock Mike Viscera or Doogie White, who are fine singers as well, but those others are the cream of the crop.
"Eclipse" is spectacular! Perfectly balanced, complete album!
Eclipse is easily in my top five favorite Yngwie Malmsteen solo albums. I was barely 12 years old when it came out and I listened to your very often and still do. Yngwie's first four or five singers were all Phenomenal to me. The others were good too.
Hiya Pete. That T-shirt looks brand new,Help a fellow Purple fan out. Where did you find it ?? Thanks !!
I’ll take Pete’s Les Paul in a heartbeat!
Making Love
Jet to Jet
Starcarr lane is soo good
i know, RIGHT!? :P
Great list guys. Great to see Jeff a true shredder offer his opinion.
Oveture 1383 Leviathan underrated tracks.
Love yngwie but I agree ..some pretty bad stuff(not the guitar playing but the songs)
I am a Viking! My choice also! 😎
Nice Strat. Wonder if it has stacked humbuckers.
Duncan YJMs ;)
AS ABOVE, SO BELOW!!
Surprised you didn't mention Ritchie Blackmore who was the pioneer of neoclassical guitar ' highway star' and the rainbow albums especially 'rising'
For me, this is the easiest list to do. Just put the entire album "Angels of love" and it's done!
Surprised "Inspiration" wasnt mentioned.
Reqiem from the instrumental best album. Or...... pretty much anything he’s done really. 😬
🍻🍻
I AM A VIKING!!
Not in order.
1. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget
2. Black Star
3. Trilogy Suite
4. Rising Force
5. Crying
6. Icarus Dream Suite
7. Fire
8. Queen In Love
9. Magic Mirror
10. Dark Ages
Jeff Young needs to rejoin Megadeth!!! He AND Marty Friedman need to rejoin and do another Megadeth album with Dave. Or if not that at least another Megadeth album with Jeff Young. He got unfairly fired from Megadeth back then.
Icarus Dream Suite
Forgot to mention Richie Blackmore after Jimi Hendrix.
Demon Driver coolest riff
Yngwie’s live set has been a disaster for 20+ years. He blew off ALL his melodic vocal tunes. Only plays the fast double bass tracks. It bewilders me.
@@larrynolletti4594 I saw him open for AC/DC on that tour. They were awesome! AC/DC was too ;)
Jeff is like Dennis Miller with hippie hair.
No Icarus Dream Suite? Fail.
Watch a couple of videos about pacing. I fell asleep before you got to the first song. Bored to death.
That must have been difficult finding ten great yngwie songs
Not at all...the hard part was keeping it under 10!
Sea of Tranquility don’t get me wrong, I love his playing
HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR!!!
Jeff's cover of Yngwie's BIGFOOT is on YT somewhere - pretty impressive. Otherwise, I'd ordinarily be puzzled how someone with the good taste to enjoy 10CC and the Tubes could sit through one Malmsteen album after another.
And what's wrong with that? Is it not possible to like/love different music & bands from multiple genres?
cuz, he's musical genius and there is amazing, peerless stuff sprinkled on his LPs throughout. ;)
I was blown away by him in the mid 80's, but he was repeating himself by the early 90's and I lost interest as better players came along. But I cannot deny his massive influence and originality when he first hit the scene.
Jesusavesouls !
the vocals on the now your ships are burned demo are impossible to listen to. Just saying' horrible
Rival Sons?
