The Cajón is often the first choice when drummers call for a quieter sound. Whether playing a gig in an acoustically challenging environment, such as a church, unplugged shows, or simply stylistically speaking, there are situations where a drum kit is simply too thick. However, not only to limit yourself to a vile wooden box is not for everyone - fortunately you can build a small drums around the cajon with little effort.
Here are some inspirations on how to build your own Cajón-based setup. We'll introduce you to three approaches to configuring your custom Cajón setup, especially how it works without any special add-ons that are now widely available from multiple vendors, many of which have already been tested on bonedo.

How to set up your drumset: ua-cam.com/video/Dyd9rX26QV8/v-deo.html
Which "snare" is that?
I love the understated drum set. There is so much more that drummers can do in terms of textures and rhythms once we take the volume down and remove all the unnecessary toms and cymbals.
I've had a cajon for a while. I enjoy playing it.
Wow, I never heard of those tiny cajons, that's awesome.
I have my own unique setup, similar, love your open timbae snare though, great video, love getting new ideas
But dude, what If I don't want to play the cajon? Dude?
Learn to play the bassguitar?
@@DrumsBonedo good suggestion but I don't hate myself that much! Lol jk
Check this out, it relates to your video! ua-cam.com/video/8KonoCLO4L0/v-deo.html
Cajon are not a replacement for drums, you have to play them differently to make them sound good.
I'm gigging with the Cajon (I used to), but I still work on my drum skills and I started to play drums years befor I bought my first Cajon. Still, there are a lot of great drummers, that sound like shit on the Cajon.
@@heliosho oh definitely man. Cajons are their own thing and really difficult in my opinion. But I also really dislike them tbh haha
Yeah I don't equate cajon to a drumset.
I was looking for that kind of video so long.. Thanks you a loT!
BRUSHES ARE LIFE!! Very original ideas with cajon !
Thanks!
I use a percussion table for cajon add ons plus a travel cajon as snare plus a Meinl BassboX.
I love the video, really gives me some great insights and ideas to use in my church setup. We a small venue so having a full drum set is not ideal, I been using the Cajon and a tab Cajon. just picked up a cajon bass pedal too. These lighter setups have really been alot better for us in practice.
Dan H thanks for watching and much fun with your Setup!
@@DrumsBonedo I am man!
That’s awesome. I got a drumset but it’s too loud. I guess I’m gonna try to do one of these.
Yes, it inspires!! thanks for the ideas.
I inspired after watching this video.
Got a setup idea seeing you playing, thanks for this video :)
thanks for the advice this is really what I'd like to do with my Cajon. The adventure begins. I'm making a homemade wooden pedal for bass sound. Interested in what you have tried for heads o kick pedal?
Perfect various sound and setups
Big hand to you my friend, excellent orientation!
Cool, I want to put a practice pad on my snare and make a cajon as a kick drum for low-volume home practicing.
definitely helped me a lot. im a beginner drummer, i bought a cajon and now i want to create a nice setup but my question now is. what brushes to choose. theres a huge variety. thanks
I like your creativity sir.
Yooo the grooves were freakin dope I hardly payed attention to the video
Thanks heaps. Drums are really great. 😊
Excellent video. Thank You so much!
Awesomely amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 excellent tutorial 🙌🏼🌺☺️
Very nice ideas
awesome vid!
I did it so:
Buying a Thomann Percussion table
Gibraltar SC-GCA-TP Cymbal Arm
Millenium Cowbell Holder
Meinl BassBoX plus pedal
And hook tape
I put a Thomann TCA Flat Cajon in the left top corner
A Meinl WSS1BK Cajon Wood Side Snare below (straight side directed to the flat cajon)
right from this I have a
Thomann TCA Cajon Jingles
below this a Meinl SLAP Cajon Slap Shaker large
below this left a Meinl WC1-S Cajon Castanet small (left) and a Thomann PB2 Power Block large red (right).
The last column has
Both kinds of Meinl Cajon Finger Jingles, I attached them, that the jingles are muted and the strap is above.
Schlagwerk SIZ10
Also I attached a Schlagwerk SIZ10 on the flat cajon in the left corner. This makes it possible to play snare rolls.
In addition to this, I attached 2 splash cymbals, the cowbell holder on the top edge of the table and a Millenium DT300 BK mountable tambourine
I play them with 2 different Rohema Poly Brush - the left hand gets a tightend one, I hit the instruments with the rubber ring, the right hand has a loose one.
In addition I use:
Bongos with a Sonor BSTL Bongo Stand BK and damped with SkyGel Gel Damper Pads Crystal Blue (I put them on the back of the skin, so the bongos aren't too loud)
Schlagwerk SH10 Shake Hands (to double the notes I play on shaker & co)
Meinl FJS2S-BK Foot Tambourine (to emulate pedal hi hat)
and Meinl FS-BK Foot Shaker (so every bass drum beat has some shaker).
To get a softer sound on the "Bass box" I attached a loop tape on it, where the beater hits the box.
To transport the stuff, I use for the percussion table plus bass box, cymbals and tambourine the
Stairville SB-145 Bag 465 x 410 x 275 mm
and for the bongos Millenium Classic Bongo Bag
The additional hardware is in an extra bag.
Now I need a bar stool only and can play very nice.
The reasons are
- A usual cajon kit needs much more time to prepare
- A cajon bass pedal needs much more power to be kicked
- Small cajon percussion attached on the cajon doesn't sound good, you hear a blend of this sound and the cajon housing.
Hi, great video! What brand and model are the black brushes you are using? I have been searching for a pair of brushes that can be used for brush work, but also sound articulate, yet volume controlled when playing hats, ride and cymbals.
Joe Rivera: search for Regal Tip Ed Thipgen Poly Brush. Thanks for watching!
already done out of necessity. congregation said a full drum is too loud so i built a cajon-drum-hybrid set with some percussion elements. sounds great but still prefer a normal drumset
Great video my friend! Danke!
Thanks for watching!
What if a Thomann flat cajon was used in place of a snare drum ?
Thanks for the video! What is the model of the soft beater shown at 2:10?
This is called BagBeat. It's made out of leather by a small workshop here in Germany. www.bagbeat.de/index_de.html
@@DrumsBonedo Very nice! Danke! :)
Great ideas, thanks.
what is the model of this snare used in 4:03?
Is it similar to Brazilian tambourine?
congratulations on the ideas!
Daniel Neris Toca Jingle Snare and LP Stanton Moore Pandeiro.
Nice vid👍🏾
I have a question: for a cajon as a base drum, with a kick (I have the Thomann one), what equivalent size of base drum would you say it is? 14" ... 16" ... else? I know the sound is quite different, but what would it be close to?
Its a quite bass heavy sound with no real "click" so big sizes with thick hard woods would be kind 'a similar.
hello, at 1:40 what Hi hatt and cymbal are you using, I really like the sound of them?
I was using two 8" vintage Istanbul Splashes for the Hi-Hat, a vintage 10" Istanbul Splash and an 19" Istanbul Mehmet 61st Anniversary Crash/Ride.
@@svenvonsamson8810 thanks sven. Keep up the groove. Sounding fat
awesome
Thanks for watching!
I like thiw cajon so much! Could I know the brand and series of this cajon? thanks!
Thanks! Please check the video description. There are links to some of the gear used in this video, including the Schlagwerk cajon.
thanks so much!!!
GREAT!
To set up the cajon with a standard kick pedal he has something across the bottom the keep it steady and tall enough for the pedal, what is that thing and where do I get it?
It's from a standard cajon pedal.
Gibraltar is selling one seperately: Gibraltar GCP-PM Cajon Pedal Mount
What I did was make my cajon a bass drum, set up a piccolo snare, put up a pair of 14” hi hats, and use a 16” crash as a small crash/ride.
David McAninch thanks!
Hi, great video, can you give the model of the snare and the pandero ?, Thank
Hi SANTIAGO Didier, the Snare is called Toca Jingle Snare, the pandeiro ist the Stanton Moore Model by LP.
Thank you very much !
Hi all, Im aware this is an old thread, however I'm going to ask..can someone shoe me how to play an acceptable Bo Diddley type groove? thanks
What is the adapter or connecting piece you used to connect a standard kick pedal to the Cajon?
It's from a standard cajon pedal.
Gibraltar is selling one seperately: Gibraltar GCP-PM Cajon Pedal Mount
Wich is the snare with jingles at 4:28?
Great video. I just got the Millenium Cajon pedal thanks to your previous review + I got a snare and some cymbals to make my first simplified drum set. I really like your videos and reviews (I use google translate to read the German haha).
Thanks man, we really appreciate that!
Hallo, was ist das denn für ein Ständer für die Schlagwerk Cajonito? Wo bekomm ich die her?
Oliver Lahr Das ist ein ganz normales Snare-Stativ, was auch für 12“ Durchmesser passt.
What is the name of the tambourine that a locking device attached to it?
Hi, LP Stanton Moore.
@@DrumsBonedo Thanks :)

What is the name of that cute small cymbal?

cant afford😭 my dream acoustic set
What is the size of the snare??
10" Toca Jingle Snare. Thanks for watching!
Sorry guys, but in Finland we have come up with this earlier than you. Check it out, Loota percussion!
juhani manninen Thanks Juhani, we already know about it. We have tried to get an example long time ago for a review. The guys in finland never delivered.
what's the name of snare?
Toca Jingle Snare.
This is actually more expensive than buying a regular kit. Some smaller pocket kits cost under $500. By the time you purchase cymbals, pedals, and stands and not to mention a good sounding cajon can run about $179, you've spent quite a bit. I guess you could buy a cheaper cajon but it's still costly when the accessories cost more than a kit.
I like this. Not so much goddamn cymbal ringing covering up the harmony (feeling) and melody (message).
Mình sẽ làm 1 con snare vuông.
Snare
NO! Sorry, but no. At least not in Russia. All the stuff showen in this video gonna cost me half a year of hard work (taxi rent is not included). And you get a sound that completely differs from a drum kit.
My method - cajon + simple pedal + heavy brushes. A cymbal and tamb as an option. And you can carry it anywhere on your feet.
so then don't do it lmao, no one said you had to
its not supposed to sound like a bold and brash drum kit, its supposed to fit in a smaller, quieter, more intimate acoustic settings
Ma é gigi d alessio?
Siii altri italiani
Cheap set up??
Looks like at least a grand bro.
I told my band never tell me to play cajon or i quit
Wtf is wrong wit them sticks
...or, you could just get better at Cajón.
