Surprise, it's not a Lawbringer video. I didn't do it intentionally, I just thought it would be fun to make a short video about the new Wulin hero. Lawbringer Analysis will be out next, hopefully.

Oh definitely, but insanity doesn't tend to pan out well for people who go up against opponents who practice a martial art and meticulously use specific stances for practical reasons. INB4 someone decides to tell me, yes I know, it's a video game. I just find it funny that out of the entire roster, she is probably the most unrealistic yet one of the most viable gameplay wise compared to the rest of the roster.

It's super hard for me to say this after your disclaimer, but Zanhus foot work is more representative of martial arts than sword play. Alot of his stances are from a martial art called Taekwondo. His top guard is actually a stance called tiger stance which distributes all the weight on the back leg, it's mainly used for snapping kicks with the front leg and defense, alot of the wulin heros use stances from various martial arts, no shade though I really enjoy your videos

Pretty much everything you said is right, however I just don’t understand why ubisoft would give a swordsman like zhanhu taekwondo like stances when taekwondo is basically all kicks (even though its called the way of the foot and fist yadda yadda).. this really doesnt have to do too much with you but im just questioning their stance choice, such as tiger stance for top guard and deep front stances for his side guards.. its not like they give a mobility advantage and zhanhu doesnt use any aspect of taekwondo except for the stances
Edit: Also, since mobility isnt too much of a priority with the stances, i wonder why they would give him something like a tiger guard instead of a more balanced back stance

The motion capture of Zhanhu is actually made by a Chinese-local fencing group's help. Some of their members are doing HEMA as well, and some of them are practicing Chinese swordsmanship and maybe some other cultures. The funny fact is that in order to make the difference between Katana or maybe Nodachi, Ubisoft changed the historical weapon "Miaodao"(苗刀)into the “Changdao”. There is no scientific name of weapon called Changdao in Chinese because the word "Chang" means Long, it's an adjective word. So yes, there is no long saber with a straight blade in Chinese history, as far as I knew at least. But the funny thing is, Miaodao was created in Ming Dynasty, so does Zhanhu's background. At that period of time, China was having a war with Japan, so according to the Katana/Nodachi they seized from the battlefield, ancient Chinese general improved the Nodachi into the Miaodao, so yes technically Miaodao does related with Nodachi a lot. But from the design perspect, Ubisoft had to let players see the differences.

    • @cloudgu3383
      @cloudgu3383 4 роки тому +3

@@kurodo9926 It's okay, but I didn't expect any reply though lol. Yes, the Zhanmadao(斩马刀)is a thing. But I personally don't believe this is a real-exist practical weapon. According to the descriptions of Zhanmadao from the ancient Chinese war book, there are multiple possible weapons. Yet people never really discovered any historical Zhanmadao from relic at all. Also, some descriptions of Zhanmadao, such as its weight is definitely hyperbole, it is no way a human being can use. After all, the name "Zhanmadao" shows up in many ancient books from dynasties, some of them are centuries apart, and there is no discovered Zhanmadao from the relic, so I don't think it is a real weapon. But the Miaodao or Changdao is something that can be found in the relic and almost the same with what the Ming dynasty's book recorded. I have to declare that I am not a scholar or professional guy, just normal people who studied martial arts and interested in swords, so I probably will make mistakes or what am I saying isn't totally correct XD. Anyway thanks for paying attention lol.

The snap is how you trust with a jian but with 2 hands. And the top stands is called short fighting stands. It's a stance you retract in to protect yourself and because most of your weight is on the back leg you can launche kicks very easy from that postion. Or in sunda's case step in to do a attack. The side stances are the bow stance and reversed bow stance but he is not really flexiable enough to do them right. Bassicly same idee will help you step in for a sideways attack. Sow from a asian masrhelarts prespectif it's logical. Not trying to kritiek you if you don't really know you won't understand why but sunda does things pretty much right. One thing I'm not trained with this weapon sow I don't know how to use it, but as far as i can tell the did a kind of good job like with most of the chinees charakters.

I am indeed a kung fu practitioner and man... I gotta say you have a really nice eagle eye and went perfectly through all the main characteristics oh those stances. Eventhough they used those stances in the game as statics stances (or ready stances), both the bow stance (the one he is sideways to the opponent) and the false/cat stance (the one his feet are way too close) are stances used while attacking, defending, evading, etc. So they are not meant to be used as ready stances, hence why each one has really strong and weak points (eg. false/cat stance, in that case, is probably meant to be an evading move from a leg aimed attack, so he pulled it out at the same time he stays ready to counter attack (just like the ox stance as you said :). I'm quite impressed by your really nice analysis, well done!

It's the Miao Dao from Sword Buyers Guide for $200. They don't explicitly say it, but I am fairly certain it's made by Ryuijin who make a lot of the Katanas on SBG. I'll have a review out for it at some point, but the short version of it is that it's worth the money. Just make sure if you cut water targets, to immediately clean the blade. No joke, I had minor rust spot come up within 20 minutes of droplets sitting stagnate on the blade, maybe even less than 20 minutes. My only real complaint with the sword.

If weight is equal on both feet, then in order to move you have to take the weight off a foot before you move it, an extra step in the process. So in Chinese martial arts they avoid 'doubleweighting'. The weight is almost always over %70 on one leg or the other except in motion. Cool video!

So id like to put my own thoughts in. Having done martial arts for a long time i can say the devs had no idea of realism in the stances although hes stands in a long bow stance thats isnt Necessary for his side guards. In his top guard he stands in a cat stance which is ment for small movements back and forth not long hops and skips like he does. For his side guards all he has to do is move his blade to that side and it would have worked or stand in a more comfortable arrow stance which is squared off but still guarded

But I have done Shaolin Hand to hand fighting for a bit (and while I personally don’t have experience with this weapon) I noticed that in his top stance he is in what we call a “Cat stance”. As far as I know it’s mainly used for kicking but in that stance 100% of your weight is on your back leg and your front leg is just in front of you. It’s used for keeping Balance while kicking. That may explain why his feet were so close together. That said I wish he was a bit lower. My master would hit me with a stick if I looked like that ahaha

Also, I know a lot of the movement in the trailer seems pointless. But it is what is called "formula" which is a demonstration of skill rather than a series of optimal battle moves. And yes, there are certain moves like "hitting the lantern" that look silly and unnecessary, but yo need to know that the formula is not designed to be used in a real fight most of the time. In other words, it is a serie of difficult movements that one makes to demonstrate mastery or in this case "excellence". Quoting zhanhu a bit.

I don’t do Chinese Martial Arts, but as someone who has done karate (Yes I know karate is different from a Chinese martial arts) for almost a decade, Zhanhu’s stances are kinda shit to be honest. I’m just going off what I’m knowing, but yeah, I can agree it’s easy to fall from a push in those stances, but the stances are not meant to be able to stay, but instead be quick and agile and counter-attack through dodging. Then again, I’m assuming these characters have been training for many years. After some time it would take more effort to make one lose their balance from a push or shove. (I have practiced keeping my balance in stances similar to these and after some time it’s not easy to make someone lose their balance). Although it looks like he has an imbalance in his stance, there is actually a balance of weight believe it or not. Overall, Zhanhu’s stances need work in regards to looks but assuming he’s trained for years he probably knows what he’s doing.

@@carna-9501 okay but that's kinda irrelevant to how developers designed a toxic character. Are you saying people should get help in how to defeat her? I agree, is she better than BP, I dont know about that.

Thats a great recreation, but I think it's slightly too far apart, either that or the ingame Sun Da is a bit taller than you

Yeah, I've practiced with various Chang Dao, Sabers, Jian, and the like in TCMA. Chinese swordsmanship is very unique in its movements and application, but personal preference plays the huge part in how well you learn and how much you absorb when practicing Chinese swordsmanship. It is a lot more challenging than HEMA or Kendo or whatever. You have a different take on these stances and movements that I haven't seen before, and I can clearly see there's a lot you don't understand about this martial art, but you're pretty good. Just don't be ignorant to it. Look into it more. An interesting video 👍
(Edit) P.S. don't take this the wrong way

Obviously your understanding of ZhanHu's moves is wrong, you can refer to this video:ua-cam.com/video/jNxQ0XAVtEg/v-deo.html
By the way, this is the Chinese Miao Dao, not the Japanese sword, the two are very different.

5:21 i think the dash attack is a bit too wasteful on movement and makes it worse by instead of just usn the strike when he jumps or hops, after hoppin he loses all the kinetic energy he could have used for it for the strike. like he jumps forward with the blade in front of him then he steps once more AND then does more wasted movement by bringing the darn blade down to his stomach after which he uses more power to actually use the poke. like holy shet he could have just used the hop for a faster and stronger attack, but no he needed to waste all that energy for 2 moves instead of 1 clean move. really annoys the shit out of me. like the hop is good, then he steps a second time and brings his hand down to move the darn sword upwards like a turd which is why he loses more energy instead of using gravity to his advantage, he goes against it. really such a shame 1 good movement then using 1 wasted movement really just a way to make it flashier. the way you swung it is a bit better but still just wastes energy imo. you dont take a second step but you still bring down the arm and then throw the sword in instead of hoppin onto the taget and hitting him with it from upwards with the help of gravity, a lot of wasted movement.

You're taking the foot stance too literally. Its looks like Ubisoft just took a transitional stance and used it as an actual stance to make zhanhu look unique.
Also I would like to point out Kung Fu practitioner tend to really exaggerate these transitional stance to the point they end up losing their purpose and just becomes theatrical dance.

The Question that I want to ask is this. Is this a martial artist with enough expertise and a soldier with combat experience?
No is the awnser to both questions. Get me a soldier hired by a professional army who actually fights with a sword to survive and make due (nobody) - and Ill show you a man who can judge wether or not the for Honor moves are real in the cutscenes.
To me this is the equivalent of a backyard shooter pretending to be a WS in the Army or a Marine with Combat Experience.

His foot work is shit. When going from a long sword stance from German height stance to a forwards stab, the forward stab is actually similar to the kendo forward back push forward stepping. When he forward dashes he still keeps that Wide A stance of the German style when he moves one foot forward which is so wrong.
