Last time the conversation came up I remember 15 - 20 years being the general threshold for being considered retro. So, it's not far off.

Rather than the 3DS becoming retro, 2024 marks the period where the DS becomes retro. The final device capable of playing titles with GameBoy in their name. That, is now retro by the common accepted 20 year wait time for a platform to be called retro. I find it difficult to call the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox retro, but next year, even the Xbox 360 will be retro!

I don't think the 3DS can legitimately be considered "retro" quite yet. The thing is, for my entire gaming life, I have always been a "very late adopter" -- unintentionally at first, because my family didn't have much money and we couldn't afford the newest stuff, but later on purpose once I figured out the economics of it. I quickly discovered I could afford double, sometimes triple the amount of games for a system on its way out or one console generation old versus what I could afford if I went after the newest, shiniest thing. And they were still amazing games! However, when you start to wait a really long time (15-25 years) to pick them up, that economic calculus reverses in a huge way, and the unwanted "old" games that stores couldn't rid of fast enough suddenly become "retro" collector's darlings.
In that way, I learned there's an important distinction between "old" and "retro". Consoles in their declining few years and one console generation back are just "old" in the public mind. You find them in clearance bins, game stores sell them for a pittance, and while people have good memories of them, it's usually not an adult attempting to spark some childhood magic. Once you get to the point where the people who grew up with a console as children, get out of school and out of college, possibly have a kid or two of their own, and get "adult money" (that last part being important), then the combination of low supply and high demand makes them "retro", sought-after, and sometimes annoyingly expensive. I have to oversimplify, but the difference between "old" and "retro" almost boils down to "about fifty bucks".
On the 3DS in particular, I can't really fathom it being retro yet despite its launch date and long life span because it's only the previous console generation. Once we get a "Switch 2" or whatever Nintendo gives us next and we get a little farther into the 2020s, then I can see the retro designation making sense.

It kind of is since it's been discontinued...you also have to consider that it being a handheld and given the graphical limitations, many of the games on the system were retro-style to begin with and the 3D gimmick is definitely considered a retro feature in society now.

I’d say it’s retro in that it was the last portable game system before smartphones really took hold. I think the 3d ability was also part of trying to offer something you couldn’t do with phones. I don’t know that there will ever be another system designed like that, at least in the mainstream- to that extent, it is a retro product of its time. Same with the Wii which I’ve been playing a lot of lately.

Personally I have a hard rule of 20 years before I think something should be called retro. The main problem is that our common veniaular doesn't have a term for things that are neither modern nor retro. Take the Wii. The Wii isn't retro yet by my strictly 20 year limit. Yet there is no way the Wii is modern. So what is it other than _limbo_.

3DS isn't retro, it's still a viable gaming system with good graphics that Nintendo just decided to pull the plug on. Similar to the WiiU.
I'd refer to the Trinity of handhelds, Gameboy/Pocket/Color as retro, GBA generation, maybe so. but even the OG Phat NDS isn't 'retro' and that launched 20 years ago this fall.
I'd love a modern take on a Gameboy system. Cart-based, offline, no subscriptions, no microtransactions, no season passes. Unfortunately, that can't be effectively monetized, so it will never happen.

The same could be said for every unsupported console. The NES is still a viable system, people are still making games for it.
Would you consider the Evercade as being a modern take on the Gameboy?

I don’t think it’s retro. It’s hard for me to think about when it will be, though, because technology has changed a lot from what was around in 2011. I mean, 4K TVs are practically mainstream right now, but I they certainly weren’t in 2011.

    Lifespan of a console.
    1 year “new”
    2-9 not old not new.
    10-19 old (3DS)
    20-39 retro
    40 -79 old school
80+ Ancient keep in mind, Atari just hit 50 years, first video game company isn’t even that old!
