@@ram527 What wrong knight move did he missed Nh3 losses to Kg8 where Black can guard the King with the 7th rank Rook either on g7 or h7 . i analyzed it with Stockfish all the last moves from Hikaru were top Stockfish 16 depth 33 ply best moves so the draw seemed like inevitable . After the Knight move where he Ne4 the following moves were forced where Re7 , Ng5 Kg7 , Rg3 hxg5 , Qxg5+ ends up in a perpetual check for White otherwise any other move and the Black King escapes either on e8 or it follows the perpetual . and its winning for Black because has an extra Knight .
Magnus probably just felt that it was not a mate anyway even as it looks like it, and he felt confident that it woulud be a draw as a maximum for Hikaru 😊. Actually the poker face of Magnus creates the visibility that he knows the exact moves till the end of game and it creates pressure on opponent in such games and it makes them blunder more.
Exactly that’s what makes you better trying to understand their moves, but not only that, when they are taking 30sec plus to make a move I try and say out loud what I would play, in 5 seconds. And then I try to understand why they took time to get an advantage instead of playing an “obvious” move. This has helped me get out of the 1400-1600 range, and now am 1700. Don’t play your opponent no matter if they try and flag you or talk just look for the best moves and if you lose you lose you can’t get angry and learn from the moves and why your move was wrong and why the best move was the best move. Anyway, I’m a casual so I don’t try and invest too much time into it as I don’t make money, but if you want to get over the jump of 1200-1500 you’re going to have to invest some time, unless you’re just natural or been playing since a kid

I enjoy chess, I'm crappy at it, but play some. Watching it is so difficult though because I can't appreciate the moves or usually the status of the game at any given moment. You have to be really really good at chess to see what the moves do and that is virtually impossible as a casual fan watching the highest level chess ever. Other competitions don't have nearly as complicated strategy and therefore the status of the game is easy to understand. The fun in watching those competitions (typical sports) is in the execution of the strategy which is easily understandable even if one cannot do it.

You need to learn a bit of theory like the values of the pieces or which position is better to make sense of every move. Chess tournaments at the GM level are strenuous, mentally exhausting, hard work, and tiring. They are in fact working hard. My question is, are they being paid, for playing these kinds of tourneys? So where do they get the money for day to day living, paying rent, food bills, transportation, etc? My thoughts are no, they are not paid. So why take chess full-time? Insane.
