BBC Proms 2011 Hooray for Hollywood
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 кві 2020
- A celebration of the Golden Age of Hollywood film musicals featuring Annalene Beechey, Charles Castronovo, Matthew Ford, Sarah Fox, Caroline O'Connor, Clare Teal, the Maida Vale Singers, John Wilson Orchestra and John Wilson (conductor).
The appearances of John Wilson and his hand-picked, high-octane orchestra have been among the most sensational Proms events of recent years.
Joined by a formidable line-up of today's vocal stars, they give what one critic has described as 'the auditory equivalent of a steam-clean' to another cache of show-stoppers.
'Hooray for Hollywood' takes us from the dawn of the talkies and the birth of the movie musical through to the 1960s. An extended sequence pays special tribute to the RKO films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who was born 100 years ago.
Recorded on 29 August 2011
Broadcast on BBC2 on 3 September

gracias por poner los titulos de las canciones
@@Joealmanya Actually, 'There's No Business Like Show Business', was indeed from Annie Get Your Gun, but that was produced by Metro in 1950, not 1946. And the orchestration they used in this 2011 show, was from the 1954 20th Century Fox Production "There's No Business Like Show Business" with Ethel Merman, Marilyn Monroe, Mitzi Gaynor, Dan Dailey and Donald O'Connor.
Wonderful! Thank you 🙏

Considering that most of this music is nearly a century old ,it still sounds as fresh as the day it was written. Thanks to John Wilson and his wonderful orchestra.
About the time I think civilization is dead and buried, I find this. There is hope!!!
JOHN WILSON THE BEST CONDUCTOR EVER IN BBC PROMS..... he is not a conductor alone, he IS the orchestra , superb artist with the best and fine tune with public ears and eyes....
Not just the speial guests the singers, but the whole orchestra....it was an absolute pleasure to watch. H Mcormick
The "Shall We Dance" segment is a true masterpiece orchestrated by JohnWilson, "Stunning" the true essence of Hollywood.
It's nice that folks across the pond appreciate and enjoy this great piece of American culture
THE JOHN WILSON ORCHESTRA IS FANTASTIC, WONDERFULL, MARVELOUS !!!
IT'S AN ENCHANTED "TIME MACHINE" TO THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLYWOOD AND BROADWAY UNFORGETABLE MUSICALS !!!
THIS WONDERFULL PERFORMANCE IS AN UNVALUABLE CULTURAL PATRIMONY
FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS !!! 😍🇬🇧😍🇺🇸😍🇬🇧
Amazing - one of the best orchestras ever!
It just can't possibly get any more pleasing to the ear. And thank you, UA-cam, for making it accessible.
BLISS FROM FIRST NOTE TO LAST ..🙏🏼🥂🍾
EXCELLENCE!!!! - John....You did not even sweat.....That's because the Event, (The Outstanding John Wilson Orchestra, John Wilson...Himself, (No-other) and the Eloquent Singers) were SO COOL! Gwen; Baltimore, Maryland. Thank you....
Why I first heard that RAH Proms concert on the BBC my immidiate reaction was
I'VE, WAITED YEARS FOR THIS!!
I even loved Katie Derham coming down the stairs to get us ready for a great evening!
The best music ever. Cannot wait to see John Wilson Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall live for my 91st birthday later this year. Wow what a present from my family.
Hope you made it and that you're still here.
This is now my favorite Orchestra band of all time, outstanding performance ❤
Now, THIS is what is known as Music. The sheer talent of those men and women who wrote and performed these wonderful songs and all the work that went into putting them on film was nothing short of astounding. The hours of pure joy this music brought will bring joy for many years to come. Finally, something to thank Hollywood for...
makes me feel like dancing!
It was great before PC
Wondrous sheer talent indeed!!
I wish that feeling and spirit is in the music, dance and movies like before. It’s not the same.
The program excellent and timeless seen over again. Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers are in heaven viewing this with pride
glowing and tapping their shoes
with spirit and vibes!! I met Ginger Rogers at book signing in San Francisco, California. Keep it going with that beat and energy.
John Wilson and his orchestra and friends at The Proms . I always look forward to this event.
Thank you, John Wilson and your wonderful orchestra for keeping these great Hollywood musicals alive in so many Proms. I’m 80 years old and am so enjoying listening to these unforgettable songs again!
Bless you lady , I am not going through an other youth like you . But, I love this music too.
Hooray for John Wilson! He is absolutely adorable! As well as supremely talented...
he sure is!!! Bravo!!!
"They don't make 'em like they used to"
Thoroughly enjoying this. Found the PROMS a few years ago, I absolutely love Hollywood and their music.
Fabulous no matter how old you are.
Merci beaucoup from Paris France, first class!
My Husband and I watched this entire concert tonight. We cast it to our tv, it was amazing. All the artists were amazing, as were the orchestra and singers, and that conductor is HOT.
Are you sure you should not have been better insulated (from the conductor's so-called, temperature margin), considering your marriage commitment?
Secret Love is truly a gem! Percy Faith's and his orchestra made this magnificent arangement
All of the Fred Astair numbers are from the thirties, and are as wonderful now as when they first performed !
And I am dancing to them
This is wonderful! But when they sing There's No Business Like Show Business, you get a whole new respect and appreciation for Ethel Merman... that grand ole dame could fill that august theatre without a microphone!
It is by no means "the Stars"...it is someone like you who presents perfection to the ear....you are an absolutely wonderfully talented man!!
I will say it over & over the warmth, dynamics, expression you bring out of the excellent musicians John Wilson is unsurpassable. I am an international professional pianist ....I know! I never tire of all of you.
Hello Such wonderful music .Performed by outstanding musicians! I love ❤️ every minute of the performance .
Yes, the raw material is great. But let no one underestimate the quality of this presentation. This is an orchestra under perfectionist discipline, yet performing with spirit and joy. And yes, John Wilson is a stylish performer up there, but much greater credit goes to him for crafting this outstanding orchestra.
I could listen to this concert forever. Matthew Ford and Clare Teal are the experts in the delivery of this repertoire, but all the singers touch the heart. Great work from John Wilson and the orchestra.
I feel the same way about it
Landmark performance. Absolutely stunning.
JOHN WILSON IS SENSATIONAL IN LEADING ALL THESE PEOPLE. YOU CAN TELL HE IS HAVING A GREAT TIME. THIS IS SO MUCH FUN, FULL OF JOY AND I CAN'T STOP WATCHING IT EVERYDAY! JUST MARVELOUS!! SYLVIA! 8/14/2020
Sylvia , you said it all.
I always enjoy watching and listening to the John Wilson orchestra and the whole team putting on an entertaining and brilliant performance.I also think the direction and camera work is superb, seeing the orchestra do their excellent thing.Roly🇬🇧.
I agree Roly . It is SO good. I am being
distracted from getting
up.
From NZ 🇳🇿
Excellent 👍👍
I remember TCM brought back those movies with Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers. I enjoyed them immensely.and this performance is just what I needed to brighten my day which is freezing! Cecile
.ember
They used to be free on late night television before cable.
This concert performance and it’s amazing musicians & singers along with the body of works from those amazing composers is just superb. 👍👏✅🎼
We are so lucky to have John Wilson’s dedicated genius, the incredibly talented players of his orchestra and his star singers and choir to bring back to life the golden age of Hollywood with modern recording techniques. It heartens me that I am not the last person left alive who thrills at this genre of music and that many, many others find their way here on UA-cam and that we share in this across the world, maybe years apart, but brought together by a common appreciation of something truly wonderful.
Absolutely!
Caroline O’Connor’s “showbusiness” was fantastic! Ethel would have been proud
And as a PS, I would also thank the soloists in this concert, I think Charles Castranovo was incredible !
That rendition of "Secret Love" was stunning! So beautiful, and she's an amazing singer!
Vai a vedere il tuo papa Francesco mi
This man has tapped into my happy place - as have all the wonderful members of the orchestra, the choir and the soloists - what talent, and what joy and happy memories they have given my family and I.
Magnificent John Wilson. Genious. Thank you for sharing your talent. Best orchestra in the world. That I am sure of.
Listen to this Music and get happy!!❤
I did . Happy , happy , happy .
John Wilson is as entertaining to watch as the other performers
Listening to these treasures makes one mourn for what has happened to todays Hollywood and Broadway. But, we can certainly enjoy and rejoice in this great music and the artists presenting it. Well done.
It may come back , who knows .
@@spmoran4703 It'll come back when society chooses style & grace over utilitarian pursuits. I have to wonder if that will happen anytime soon. Just look around.
Great arrangement and selection of tunes. Boy, can the Brit's swing when it's needed and create an incredibly sweet string section sound - Bravo!
Whoa ... the orchestra playing kazoos in the Jolly Holiday sequence floored me. What a fantastic, delightful touch; it sounded just like the movie scene music. This entire video is a complete winner, and guaranteed to chase the blues away. For a fan of classic musicals, this video is a keeper.
Orchestrations without peer! I'm overwhelmed!
Music way before my time but was amazing. 2022.
wow and more then that...loving the choices for the concert , all in voloved with creating it "Hurray"...a giant lol WOW!!!
I love Mr. Wilson's directing! Truly dancing music & Mr. Wilson was probably a dancer in another life. Another great show.
You've been watching too many Shirley Maclaine movies Betty.
Thank you, John Wilson. Superb musicality, Just loaded with great memories of one of the most extraordinary musical periods in our history! Thank you for the enthusiasm, love and Joy you bring to these glorious songs! NOW THAT'S MUSIC!
I’m proud to be from the country where all this great music comes from, and the whole world gets to enjoy it. They sure don’t make music like this anymore. So beautifully performed by this orchestra and beautifully sung by all those singers.
Be careful with all that pride. I'm not entirely sure that it's good for you, considering the spiritual aspects involved, as is related in biblical teachings.
This is music I’m talking about not religion. It’s religion in your perverted mind.
@@samueljaramillo4221 Now, now, Sammy boy, let's be civil. There's certainly, no religion being brought up here, I assure you. I'm just merely pointing out where one might find a reference to the subject matter at hand. That subject, being this little ole bit of foolishness, we call, "pride." That's all. Don't mind me. I'm just the messenger of fate.
I don’t know you, I don’t want to know you . Mind your business . End of conversation. Get lost you creep.
Clare Teal sounded just like Doris Day when she sang My secret love. She looks a lot like Bette Midler. great concert. Just amazing. They should do these concerts every year. John Wilson is a treasure.
mudgebauer They do them every year. They are called the BBC Promenade Concerts and they’re on TV in the UK every Friday and Saturday
- when there isn’t a pandemic, of course. You can buy tickets and go and hear them. Thousands do every time. They last for about three months so there’s plenty of variety.
@@tallandhandsome29 Thanks for the info, but Im in Mexico and I cant go to attend, would that I could. I wish they would put them all on youtube. If there a way to see the t.v. shows from UK on the internet? thanks
Bclare teal singing secret loveh
Just as refreshing as if was being performed for the first time right now.
The John Wilson Orchestra and friends . The Proms is great and highlights the best in Classical music, but The Proms was made for this group of musicians.
I listen to this every day and never grow tired of it! Mr Wilson is an amazing conductor and musicians are wonderful. I particularly like Matthew Ford's renditions, he's a modern-day Fred Astaire cum Frank Sinatra! I love everyone's rendition of "Put on your Sunday Clothes"! Mr Wilson, please give more performances of big band jazz - you bring the music alive and swinging!
I may start listening every day as well. It's wonderful; beyond wonderful!
@@roseevaris9110 Me TOO !!!
😊
What a THRILL, from start to finish ..❤❤
every time I see this video, I fall more in love with Clare Teal, I love you Clare Teal you'll never know, now you know

Felt the same !!!@@jorgesixtoantonio3162
I grew up on these songs. Nicely done !!
What a wonderful performance by the musicians and singers. I just love Strike up The Band, by the most expressive and delightful singer.
She looks so joyful and energetic.
What a fabulous ensemble. The group is outstanding.
To John Wilson, it is so fun to watch exceptional conductors. You for one, make it look so easy. Thank you for loving what you do. Keep doing what you do, you are exciting to watch you conduct.
My best to you and you fantastic group of performers. THANK YOU!!!
Music of my yesteryears that brings me so much happy memories
This is a FABULOUS tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood film musicals just AWESOME, , I just love listening to Mr John Wilson and his orchestra, every performance they perform whether it be Musicals new and old is just beyond words, all of the soloists and the Maida Vale Singers are Just superb, this is what music is about, great professional playing great lyrics. Timeless musicals and timeless songs which will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN,.
Superb,Thank you
3:39 My beautiful mom died at age 95 in 2018. "Indian Love Call" was one of her favorite songs. As a boy, we would sit together and watch the old movie musicals that sometimes were shown locally on Saturday afternoons. I started learning trumpet in the 5th grade and played all the way through college. Also self taught on the piano, and was part of of our chorus in high school and college. Maybe those times spent with mom on those Saturday afternoons had something to do with that. ♥️ And I love the John Wilson orchestra!
What a brilliant band of musicians.
Oh my! This music reminds me so much of the Variety Hour performances we did in high school during the mid 50’s, directed by Bill Moeller. Such great memories.
This is brilliant!!. These incredible musicians really gave me the feeling of the period. Loved every minute of your concerts. This one is wonderful!! I love all of you!! John Wilson Thank You !! The singers were absolutely perfect.
Really good to see Ian Buckle the pianist featured at 6.30, great music !!
Andre Rieu travels the world with his orchestra. I would like to see this in my neck of the woods in CA.
Beautiful! This amazing show reminds me of the dvd-box I have: That's Entertainment! ❤👌❤
Fantastic Show, Thanks you, John Wilson Orchestra and Great Singers
Sensational from start to finish. Breathtaking musicianship.
Life is a musical, it brings so many stages in our life to reality.
I wish life were a musical, what I believe is that music is part of our lives that we can enjoy it, it is still good that you think that way, it is very positive
Very nice music and good singers. A pleasure to listen. Thank you.
Could listen to this forever
Amazing everyone involved 👏 ❤
Superb musicianship by those who really love the music, and pure joyous escapism...and why not!!... ;-)
They don't make great music like this anymore ....makes for a perfect night of memories.
You seem to be right, Allan. I also miss that kind of music, but times change.
This may be my favourite thing on UA-cam. I've listened to this so many times, and it's great every time. You can tell how much fun everyone is having with this. Such great performances! Matthew Ford and Claire Teal especially were amazing, true stars.
Its truly magical !!
Could not agree more. A word of caution: if you do NOT have a full-blown sound system hooked up to your computer's audio port, you are missing the most magical treat you can give human ears. Whattan orchestra!!!!!!!!
Dear mr KC Muisulis, can only agree with you, Tania Crocker xxxx
Love it
Mr Misulis, listen to Little train of Capira excellant by villa lobos, let’s hear what an orchestra can do xxxxx
This is one of the best performances ever!
this was absolutely fantastic. What talent, thank you for the beautiful concert!!
Heaven is right here folks..💥🥂🍾🏘😇
Outstanding original extraordinary rare rendering historical Hollywood spectacle experience rendez-vous EVER VERSION ! Merci beaucoup from Paris France.
Absolutely stunning. I love it from beginning to end
Wow, that's one of the most beautiful renditions of One Hand, One Heart I've ever heard. Bravo, and thank you, to them and to you for sharing.
What a fabulous concert,I wish I had been there !!!!
Me to.
This makes me want to move to England and enjoy their musical sensibilities, and their decency, and good nature (Boris Johnson notwithstanding).
Peter Swanson All the more reason you move to “this aisle...this England”, now handed over to barbarians, anarchists by liberal-leftists like Corbyn. BTW, I a, not British.
Would that I could, but alas, its too late for me now. Im too old and havent a pot 2=P in. I wanted to years ago, but wasnt able to then either. Maybe in the next life. There will Always be an England.
You said Broadway but it's not England
ha ha! Here's to London!!!
Trump Magnus!! With Boris
simply fabulous!!
music is so timeless, as it draws the commonality of so many together. it is what we need throughout our lives, both in the good and the bad times. how it does emote the soul, the body and all around. i love this vid, and i am thankful for these wonderful singers, entertainers, musicians, and venues such as this, in which to present all. wonderful! there is nothing quite like the sound of a wonderful orchestra. especially from one of the great cities of the world, london.
magnific !!! thank you very very much !! the serenade of student prince.... I LOVE I LOVE !!!FROM NICE COTE D AZUR !!!!!FRANCE !!!
This performance had the audience and the orchestra spellbound-wonderful !!!
From Northamptonshire !!!
To be honest, absolut first class production, not only by musician's high lewel - Castronovo absolut super selection for this also - , not only by the synchronity of the marwellous orchestra, not only by the professional line of the different athmospheres, wich lead us forward on the Hollywood's great moovies and feelings... but dont' forget the "BBC TELEVISION ORCHESTRA". The professional picture cuttings, the well thinked camera moovings, the really "speakable" picture compositions by the cameramans and assistanst, wich always have great coherency and very good synchronity by the musical emotional happenings, dont' forget the fantastic sound, the really "teachable" television broadcast lewel. This is same great production in my eyes, like the concert himself. Thank You very-very much for everybody - performers, directors, sound engineers, players, cameramans and cutters, editors and of course, for John Wilson and His all colleagues for this marwellous feeling. Simply one of the best concert ever. :-))
This is wonderful in all aspects and makes my day with all the happy music and excellent orchestrations for the musicians who have been well mentioned in the comments. I have watched a number of Proms on UA-cam over the years and this ranks near the top.
I never had a thumbs up for my comment about Ruth Rogers ,but I still think she is gorgeous !!
Overwhelmed..by...memories..
i don't know how many times ive seen this already omg
Superb orchestra and singers playing beautiful music, not heard these days. Can't there be a revival of this kind of music? I'm sure it would be most welcome.
Wonderful program!
Loving the kazoos and sound effects! Talk about multitasking 🙃 Super cute idea and pulled off perfectly!
Simply W o n d e r f u l!! Happy moments & memories!!
Hello Dolly is such an underappreciated musical. A string of great songs.
I think so too! It is one of my favorites.
Caroline O’Connor always gives us a fabulous performance. ❤️🇦🇺
