Jefferson was never going anywhere, period. If anything, the Vikings intentionally floated the rumor about Nabers out there on draft night to steer the Giants away from either McCarthy or Penix. They were never going to draft Nabers, their priority from the start was selecting a QB high in the draft.

JJ is not comparable to Addison and Diggs. Diggs was good in MN but didn't become the guy until leaving. JJ had b2b 1800 yard seasons under Zim in the same offense as Diggs. Addison is good but Jefferson still had more yards than him and he missed 7 games

I personally believe you are better off replacing guys with younger and cheaper options so you can put money in positions where the marginal difference between premium and good is larger. If they were a team with a young guy like Herbert or Jackson (when they were on their rookie deals), where you could make the argument that they just really need a weapon to help them hit the next stage in their career I could see it. Then you can jump ship when he loses a step like the Bills did. But when you have team with a lot of holes with a rookie QB who was a marginal talent coming out, it's tough for me to agree with tying that much of the cap in a position where the difference between the best player and the 20th player at the position is so small.
