  • Oiling your chain is one of the simplest, most common, and, arguably, one of the most important bike maintenance jobs. And, although just grabbing some chain lube, lubing your chain and riding might seem adequate, there are now several different chain lubes on the market.

    What type of lube are you using? Let us know your thoughts below! 👇

      I wax my own chains. Paraffin wax with a touch of Teflon powder and you can’t go wrong. The best thing is there is no mess, I can run my fingers on any part of the drivetrain and my hands are clean. Also waxing increased the life of your chain

      I use Finish Line wet lube (winter months), as I find Muc-off wet lube not as good.
      I have a good habit of hosing down the bike after every ride in the winter, to wash off all the road grit and salt… unfortunately Muc-off wet lube comes off very easily in the process and creates a mess all over the chain-stays and wheels.
      That doesn’t happen with Finish Line wet lube, it’s a bit more sticky. Perhaps attracts more dirt because of it, or wastes few extra watts, but in the winter the priorities are different. I don’t want to reapply lube mid ride after a heavy shower or loose breaking efficiency as the wet lube dissolved all over the rear wheel…
      Wet lube should be a lot more robust…

    I've heard chain-waxing is the BOMB!

      I’ve been waxing since August, and I’ll never switch back. Ozcycles has some great videos on how to make your own wax, and prep the chain properly.

    How often should you lube? How about degreaser?

    The U.V. light is a gimmick. Start at the powerlink. Finish at the powerlink. No U.V. light needed.

    I bought Muck Off & it did not work for new SRAM group set, I found that GT85, apply a few times and as you build it up it quitens down & does not attract the dirt and or wash off in the rain unlike Muck Off, Rip Off more like, wash your money down the drain as you ride

    How do these lubes compare to waxing your chain?

    • @gtn
      @gtn  2 роки тому +1

      Wax can be faster however involves more work and takes more time, regular drip-feed lubes or spray-on lubes work great also as long as the chain is clean when applying!

      I’ve tried a few muc-off products before switching to wax, and I’m definitely a fan of the wax. It’s kept my chain way cleaner, and has been wearing significantly less. Ozcycles has some great videos on how to clean the chain properly, wax, rewax, etc. and it’s not as bad as people make it sound.

    According to zerofrictioncycling (independent testing of bike lube) you should never use dry lube as it is pretty much useless (excluding UFO which tests well). They also find that muc-off test consistently bad.

      Zero Friction only tests longevity, nothing about efficiency (ie. watts). I think it's important to mention.

    • @CarlBaravelli
      @CarlBaravelli 2 роки тому

      @@lnoite true they focus mainly on longevity, but as the name suggests actually do test friction loses as well.

    • @PtWhiteBelt
      @PtWhiteBelt 2 роки тому

      @@lnoite do you know about a lubricant that has low friction but leads to low chain longevity?
      Same, but different: do you know of a lubricant with high friction that leads to high chain longevity?
      Exactly.

    Why does Muc Off test so badly in independent testing?
