Tiger stripe suffers the same issue as m81. Generally great camo, but the blacks will give you away if you're not in an area with lots of shadows to bland into. The main difference between the two is that m81 is super available, tiger stripe not so much
Historians and people nowadays says the US forces used TS for intimidation, not for practical uses. But I disagree. This is fantastic camouflage. Maybe good as today's cutting edge tech tropical patterns like Cadpat, if not better.
The thing you have to remember about historians is that almost none of them have actually had any experience or done practical tests, they rely entirely on books, samples, and photographs.
I've got to agree with you on that. It's no wonder why the U.S Army Special Forces wore the Tiger Stripe uniform in combat. It has got to be the most effectively functional camouflage pattern I've ever seen.
I've heard the main problem with the TS uniforms, which were never official uniforms actually, was that the pattern faded leaving a slightly reflective white color.
Yup. They used vegetable dyes that faded. All I have is a boonie hat from back then. I can re-dye the black easily with permanent marker, but the rest needs some help.
You appear to be backlit in the majority of the shots. Not much works well in those conditions. Otherwise, it looked like it worked well enough, though many criticize the horizontal pattern and the charcoal black stripes.
I love tiger stripe, but it seems a bit easier to spot in well lit areas, due to the black stripes. It’s def. better suited for jungles with lots of thick vegetation. North America isn’t the best place for it, but it is still pretty effective overall.
Fun fact: tiger stripe increases your combat effectiveness by over 50% it also damages enemy morale by as much as 25% and as another bonus it increases your CDI factor by over 100%

Interesting, and this was during sunny conditions. A tiger or a zebra shows for miles around when standing on a stage. Behind a bush they disappear. Same with this, you become almost invincible as soon as thin grass or scattered bushes came up front. In the Norwegian army where I spent some time we learn that camo was also how you move, and here we need to learn from the wild animals. They move in rapid movement. Twist the head and then, freeze, two steps, and then stops.
I think it’s funny that we wear the tiger stripe pattern horizontally because a tiger’s are vertical to break up the body via trees, tall grass and plants. So if you wear tiger stripes it’s mostly effective in prone than crouching because in prone the stripe pattern becomes vertical.
Those are different applications and reasons;) tigerstripe camo with it's dark streaks is supposed to blend in to foliage where trees' branches throw shadow over greenery, which is horizontal in shape, that's why it's so effective in jungles and thick bushes, and less so in temperate forests with pine trees and less undergrowth etc. stripes of actual tiger are for completely different needs and terrains
I spotted you 6 times. The first and last time (somehow...) and an even random sprinkling in between. Closer was much easier to see. I really like how you do very different distances and types of terrain. The far away wide open shots are my favorite because (I presume) they more accurately represent the average opening ambush engagement distance soldiers would encounter in war. At least, it most looks that way in the better movies and from the memoirs etc I've read. The very close shots are much more like average civilian self-defense distances, so they're more relevant and familiar to me. From all this, I've learned what a scary pain in the ass it would be to have to watch for even basically camouflaged people just kinda trying to hide. I know you could stealth much better in the shots I fail to spot you, you're giving the viewer and camo a fair test and chance. Thanks as always. Nice AR setup BTW, if those weren't OPFOR weaponry to me that's how I'd run mine.
Tiger stripe is great. That rifle needs camo too + falt matte finish. Sunlight hitting some parts of the rifle just makes it shine out. Could you recommend where is a good online source for face paint?
Try OPSGEAR.com, there’re three basic types: compacts, sticks and tubes. The tubes are excellent, they go on fast and think and will not come off your face with sweat as easily like the others. With that being said you damn need have to use steel wool to get it off your face (kidding, but not really). The compacts you can pick up at like Walmart for about five bucks, they usually come with a crappy mirror inside. A little bit more time consuming to put on but it works, the biggest thing about them is this type of face paint comes off easily once you start sweating (Particularly when your skin is rubbing against gear). You’ll notice in some of my videos it seems like I don’t paint my neck, it’s not because I don’t its because its rubbed off from my sweat and sniper veil rubbing. The sticks are made out of the same type of paint and are just a little easier to put on.
"Tiger Stripe" actually developed by the South Vietnamese Marines when they were expanding from a Naval Commando battalions to brigades then division (in 1968). the pattern is an image of the wavy sea water at the beaches to help them blend in with the surrounding while the Marines landing ashore(please search for surface sea waves on the internet and see it for yourself.) After the Vietnam War, the Marines of the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thai also adopted this pattern with some modifications (patterns/colors) for their tastes. Because this pattern is a sea wave pattern, There are no vertical tiger strips, just horizontal with some angled lines. There are 2 green shade represent water, black for the shadow of the waves and white for the light reflection from the sun. The pattern have nothing to do with Lizard camo pattern from the french paratrooper uniform worn by SVN Airborne division in early time (SVN Marines and the airborne troops did not like each other, because they only see themselves the best, so copy is a no no). French pattern is disruptive pattern with some near vertical stripes. Please don't pass the wrong information from one to another. South Vietnamese Marines were part of the South Vietnam Navy so when US Navy SEALs came to the theater , they naturally chose this camo for their operations. As a child in Vietnam I once saw a small US long range patrol unit came into my town with brand new Marines uniforms and Colt Commandos Carbines with matching boonies hats. They really looked handsome in the SVN Marines uniforms. Another version of the camo was born when US special forces created the CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) comprised of hill people in South Vietnam. . Because these people never come near the beaches in their operation area (jungle and highland) The SF replaced some shade of green with brown and the US SF also wore this color as the CIDG's advisers. This version become more popular here in the US now a day. The browny version of the camo also adopted by South Vietnamese 81 Airborne Ranger regiment (these magnificent soldiers also inland fighters). I really don't know why people here call this pattern "Tiger Stripes", but I do know the SVN Marines called themselves Crazy Buffalo, black dragon, gray panther, sea hawk, Sea wolf... and the SVN civilians call them Sea Tiger because of their aggressiveness. I was told that, during the war, no other Vietnamese solders allowed to wear their color. If you want to wear the uniform, join the marines (they are all volunteers. )They kept their esprit the corp to the teeth, I guess. Please don't call this pattern a John Wayne pattern because it was born long before the movie. I also laugh at the US Air force for for their digitized "Tiger Stripes". How often they get near a river or a beach?
John Wayne is a popular nickname for it, even if its not the proper name, it's still pretty good to know in regard to the pattern, especially this specific variation, which was deemed the John Wayne variant by many.
Hey, thank you for the really in depth information about the “Tiger Stripe” camo, it’s interesting to hear it from someone in Vietnam who knows a lot about the pattern.
Thanks for another demonstration of camouflage and what it does and doesn't do. In the vids, your AO is bright green. So is my AO.(Oklahoma) I'm wondering if bright apple green dyed clothing might be better for day light ops. Such as the Air Force dyed camo you did a vid on. Those seemed better suited. All the other camouflage types seem like they are better suited for darker contrasts. Only due to shape and silhouette being the giveaways. Of course, watching a video is easier than being in the actual area and spotting the foe. Thanks again for tye awsome videos.
I’ve got my eyes on it man, unfortunately I’m a tall/big guy and I have to wait until I can find an article of clothing in XL. Currently Sportsmansguide only have Large available.
Hey Brent, what kind of gloves are you wearing in this video? One more question as well, do you prefer combat shirts or regular BDU and ACU style blouses?
krispy colateral They're Nomex flight gloves. I prefer combat shirts when I'm wearing body armor like flaks or plate carriers. I prefer BDU or ACU style shirts when I'm just wearing chest rigs or vests without any armor on. I don't really care if the shirt is a BDU or ACU style cut, but I do like the pockets on the sleeves that are offered by ACU styled shirts. BDU cut is usually cheaper though, so that's a plus in its corner.
The jungles in Vietnam were heavily forested, triple canopy with dark shadows and bright shafts of sunlight splashing around, not the green and light green brish woods here. The tiger stripes worked better in triple canopy environments where there was much less light and more darker, shaded areas.
I used to have one of those tubes. If you thin it out with bug repellent it goes on easier and is easier to wash off. Also, it keeps the bus away! BTW my first set of cams was tigerstripe -not the real stuff though!
hey there i have the top part of this specific original tiger stripe camo but i also recently bought an older version of bottoms the same exact colors that match the top but its just a bit faded but you can't notice it unless you look up close but what type gloves are you wearing and where can i get some also does coyote color boots can go along with this camo ?
Nomex flight gloves, coyote goes with everything. That's why all of our gear in the Marine is made in Coyote, we wear it with both woodland and desert MARPAT.
Trying to decide between this and proppers asian tiger strip. Two questions Brent. Do you prefer proppers asian tiger or tigertripes products version. And does the propper bdus seem a little hot for summer time use? Iv got a propper bdu top in woodland and it's kinda warm for the summers in South Carolina. Thanks for the videos to
Both patterns are very similar, its really what you prefer. Asian tiger I believe has thinner stripes. BDUs are a jacket and trousers, it is what it is, only thing "lighter" would be a combat shirt.
WOW! What a cool looking uniform. Do you know why it wasn't adopted or tested against that ineffective gray camo in the early 2000s? I have seen photos of the gray pixelated camo and it actually popped. Did they even test it in an actual outdoor area?
I had a full set of this as a teen for paintball. Heavy Virginia woods in spring through fall. Didnt work that well till it started getting dark. Too much black.
Hey Brent0331 I'm not sure how into true to design repros you are but a site called Moore Militaria has perfect reproductions of John Wayne Dense TS in the advisor style uniform. They also have reproductions of green-dominate ERDL, which I'd love to see you review and by using Moore's sets you wouldnt possibly harm the rare originals.
Yeah I’ve been there and have looked at their repros, they’re just too pricy for my liking. I really like ERDL but I’m not going to spend 100 plus dollars on a pair of reproductions.
Hi, Brent and all fellow tiger stripe lovers. I've got a question for you about Tiger Stripe Products' JWD fabric. Does it fade? The reason I'm asking is because I recently bought one of their boonies at a surplus store that wasn't 'green' like the others. It was 'gold'. I also have another one I bought used off E-Bay. That one's quite old and shows no signs of fade. Both are manufactured by R.R. ( I think...) but bear the 'Tiger Stripe Products ' watermark thru-out the fabric. My brand new 'gold ' one is green underneath. I read somewhere that this cloth is supposed to be lightfast due to it being 'Vat dyed', and that in the early years of it's manufacture, it did fade because it was made using an earlier process of dying. Any ideas? Just curious. Great videos! By the way, who makes your tiger stripe head wrap, or is that a 'Do-Rag'? Thanks!
+art strader It does fade. The older T/S products uniforms that were made of just cotton and vat dyed fade really quick. I don't remember who makes the bandanna (mayble flydanna) but I'm sure you can find it on ebay.
Ther are different types of Tiger stripe camo " Gold" -and a more "green type" ,this camo pattern varies in striping design and has its orgins from the french "lizard" camo that was used earlier in the indochina war that was worn by the french foreign legion .
Hey, Motorrebell! Good to here from you! I own several tiger 'boons', two John Waynes (gold one and green one, both by R.B.) a Propper Asian tiger Boonie and an R.B. "hunter's tigerstripe camo" 'boon' that looks like the same pattern used by the Phillipine NAV-SOGs. All but the Propper hat have had their brims shortened to 1 3/4". I wear them dished at the top tipped forward with the cord inside the hat. I removed the 'leaf loops' from the 'hunting tiger' and the 'green Wayne'.
You should test ASAT you can get a pair of bdu pants a long sleeve t-shirt and a face mask off of Amazon for $80.00. That may be a little more pricey than your used to but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than many off the other site's that sell it.
I''m going to get this camo and the Desert tiger stripe both for paintball. but the pod harness only comes in the Original Vietnam Tiger Stripe. also I plane to go full Mag-fed later on. so I don't relay want to buy two harness's. so what will be a good camo to go with both?
+John Sparten Coyote tan gear would go good with both. watch my "Proper Asian tiger stripe video", in the begging I show different types of gear over the tiger pattern.
+Brent0331 OK thanks. I love you videos I pause the video and try to find you. it's fun. I only (guessed) where you was once. but it took me like 15 minuets by then in real life I would be dead. lol.
I know this comment is 2 years old,but I figure I'll throw my 2 cents at it anyway.I played a lot of woods paintball, and most camos were ineffective.None of them worked if you weren't staying completely still.I think it's mainly because the players were usually fairly close to each other after 5 to 10 minutes from the start of each round. After a while we all figured out that camo was of very low importance and one kid even started wearing a bright yellow shirt. It was typically the kids with well off parents who had the cool gear which didn't make up for their lack of skill,or lack of ability to see and maneuver in the woods.
There is really no one place, it’s ALICE gear. You can find it just about everywhere and usually pretty cheap. Barre Army navy and Sportsmansguide are good place to start, but like I said you can look just about everywhere to find ALICE equipment.
I hear you man, unfortunately many of the old surplus stores that use to be around have shut down thanks in part to Ebay. That’s kind of a double edged sword though, because now you can shop around on ebay and find the best possible deal (most of the time).
I've been trying to figure out for a while now what the best camo is for my area which looks exactly like yours im in SC. I want a good camo that is affordable and the most effective for my type of environment. My intended use is for SHTF escape and evade and ill probably use it for hunting to just so it doesn't sit somewhere being unused. By what ive seen on your videos this looks like it would be the best, most affordable woodland camo plus I like tiger stripe anyway so I think ill buy some and try it out where I live. Im right near the mountains to so if I had to escape anywhere it'd be there. I have tried marpat and multicam they both stick out like a sore thumb around here because its green like your video here most of the year. Csdpat is awesome I bought some fake stuff and tried it out but even it was expensive. Any suggestions on what is the best type of camo for the environment your in on this video because it looks exactly like the woods near my house? id appreciate any feedback you could give. Do you know of something better than tiger stripe that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks great video.
+Steve D This tiger pattern is one of my favorite, also check out ATACs FG. They have been some of the top performers in my opinion for this environment in the spring. Under the jungle canopy I bet that pattern works wonders.
Yup. And the large horizontal leaves in jungle environments help the pattern blend. Horses for courses.
Is supposed to be used in jungles or forest where less than 15% of light goes throught the canopy.
Works amazingly well, much better than woodland in my opinion. Keep up the good work Brent!
Thanks man.
It is still a pretty good camo. It was my favorite back in the 80s & 90s on the so cal paint ball fields.
I spotted you like 5 times and missed one please do more camo’s I’m loving ur gods and it’s fun to play a sporting game! You earned a new loyal subscriber!!!
Hey brent! I love the tiger stripe camo man the best camo.Nam' style!
Lunatic4Bizcas A ton of SEAL's wore blue jeans with Tiger Stripe shirts when in the jungles, I don't think camouflage was their primary concern
That was cool. Neat video!
pretty damn impressive in the thick stuff. Especially in the shadows
I never saw you until you moved. Good job
You appear to be backlit in the majority of the shots. Not much works well in those conditions. Otherwise, it looked like it worked well enough, though many criticize the horizontal pattern and the charcoal black stripes.
8:48 was the most telling as the florra shadow and lights closely resembled the terrain it worked optimum in.
I love tiger stripe, but it seems a bit easier to spot in well lit areas, due to the black stripes. It’s def. better suited for jungles with lots of thick vegetation. North America isn’t the best place for it, but it is still pretty effective overall.
Fun fact: tiger stripe increases your combat effectiveness by over 50% it also damages enemy morale by as much as 25% and as another bonus it increases your CDI factor by over 100%
Why’s that?
Lauri Törni lauri torni doesn’t understand his own camouflage? Shame on you
I like how the camo is most effective when stationary.
Great for ambushes
isnt that true for any camo tho?
The best camo is to stay still.
So best so far! I've been waiting this for such a long time and as I expected. Thank you very much Brent!
Me too man, I love this for a number of reasons and not just because its effective.
@@Brent0331 I am also a Tigerstripe lover as I have used it in Laos in 2003 and Burma in 2011. Would love to share my photos with you. My email is milo_1265@yahoo.com send me a text if you would like to exchange info.
Cheers Ross. Milo - Australia
Good summer pattern.
Interesting, and this was during sunny conditions. A tiger or a zebra shows for miles around when standing on a stage. Behind a bush they disappear. Same with this, you become almost invincible as soon as
thin grass or scattered bushes came up front.
In the Norwegian army where I spent some time we learn that camo was also how you move, and here we need to learn from the wild animals. They move in rapid movement. Twist the head and then, freeze, two steps, and then stops.
I think in the U.S. that pattern is best in coniferous forrests. IT was thought of as a good pattern in the pines.
Tiger Stripe is probably the coolest looking camo, I wouldn't mind having a jacket in that pattern.
Awesome videos man! I enjoy watching all the different camos. Good stuff.
***** Thanks man.
How many ticks did you find on you after filming these clips??
Oh my god!! 3:58 had no idea you were right there lol
One of my Fav camos if not my Favorite
Great camo pattern,
found it works great in pine forests too,
For sure.
Helpful video, thanks!
This is like a grown ups ‘where’s Wally/Waldo” love it!
Great summer pattern.
Need to see you shot that nice AR
In due time my friend.
I think it’s funny that we wear the tiger stripe pattern horizontally because a tiger’s are vertical to break up the body via trees, tall grass and plants. So if you wear tiger stripes it’s mostly effective in prone than crouching because in prone the stripe pattern becomes vertical.
Tigers aren't as tall as us too, and you must consider humans are in far more dynamic positions than tigers are.
Ever run into any snakes while you're Creepin around out there lol
this the best of other tiger strip vids
wow ... greats i think its much better than woodland...nice video..
That camo the best for hunting in the spring
this seems to work the best so far but the bright tiger stripe I think is more useful
Very interesting ! Wasnt the brown camo version called "Tiger Stripe GOLD" ?
Hey, thank you for the really in depth information about the “Tiger Stripe” camo, it’s interesting to hear it from someone in Vietnam who knows a lot about the pattern.
That's darn good intel, pilgrim!
I love that tiger stripe camo
Good Job Sir
Tiger stripe like all camo is most useful when used with cover, concealment, and shadows. Being unnoticed does take some work.
This kinda reminds me of MGS3.
Jake if he had a black harness and rolled sleeves it would be spot on
STUSKY And instead of his AR, a 1911. :)
It's my favorite camo pattern, can you please do a review about the Belgian jigsaw camo?
I’ve got my eyes on it man, unfortunately I’m a tall/big guy and I have to wait until I can find an article of clothing in XL. Currently Sportsmansguide only have Large available.
Hey man awesome video, my airsoft teams uniform is this tiger stripe pattern! keep up the great work. Cheers
Thanks for watching, this is one of my favorite patterns.
That stuff is frigging fantastic. Works better than marpat! Even good on the move.
Thanks man.
Now, this is a nice one, very effective. Thx for u.l.
Thanks for watching.
It works well in the woods in Southern Louisiana.
Works well in the woods of south Arkansas also
4:00 -- Excellent!
better than most, even while you were moving on a couple it was hard to make the outline
What’s going on McKwilly, yeah this is one of my favorites.
Ohh the Tiger Stripes Is the best in far-off areas by far.
hey there i have the top part of this specific original tiger stripe camo but i also recently bought an older version of bottoms the same exact colors that match the top but its just a bit faded but you can't notice it unless you look up close but what type gloves are you wearing and where can i get some also does coyote color boots can go along with this camo ?
Looks like it would work better in a darker wetter place, or a dense pine forest.
That sucks! Especially considering what they cost!
Performs better than the Asian tiger.
Where did you get your harness and all the gear? I'd love to get one to compliment my tigerstripe load out.
There is really no one place, it’s ALICE gear. You can find it just about everywhere and usually pretty cheap. Barre Army navy and Sportsmansguide are good place to start, but like I said you can look just about everywhere to find ALICE equipment.
***** Thank you, it's just living in New Jersey we don't have any good surplus stores. They are essentially glorified camping stores.
I hear you man, unfortunately many of the old surplus stores that use to be around have shut down thanks in part to Ebay. That’s kind of a double edged sword though, because now you can shop around on ebay and find the best possible deal (most of the time).
I always did love this pattern of camo but you can't find it anywhere from reasonable price and the more so in new condition
Varusteleka has a cargo pants with tiger stripe camo. Looks decent.
There're some good foreign patterns that work pretty well here too, Greek lizard and KLMK come to mind, but you might pay a pretty penny to acquire them.
+Brent0331 Thanks I like your videos ive seen most of them.
