They married for love plain and simple and he has shared so much knowledge with me over the years.
I watched this because it is like my life. I was married to a man 38.5 years older than I. We have two sons together. currently age 31 & 27. Age does not matter. We were married for 28 years. He passed away from leukemia in 2008. he was skiing at 89. He taught me to ski as well. It brought back many happy memories and I thank you for this take on age differences. Great to see it in the theaters.

And both the films show this in their own censored way.

I'm not saying that genuine love stories between people with big age gaps cannot happen in real life, but the massive, pervasive representation of middle-aged/old man + young/teenager woman in movies is chauvinist beyond measure. It's as if a woman had nothing to offer in a love relationship other than her beauty, which of course is supposed to fade out with time, making the woman worthless. It's also as if a woman above 35 or something was not entitled to a new chance with love: think about it, there are more movies depicting this kind of relationship, than movies showing two middle-aged people starting a new love story together.

Ah, you kids. It became common knowledge in the 1990's that Catherine Zeta-Jones lied about her age by as much as 10 years, making the Entrapment calculation with Sean Connery off. She claimed to be in her 20's for about 20 years. She could pull it off, so who can blame her? Otherwise, I definitely agree with Harold & Maude as #1. You mention that it was hard to understand the attraction between a young man (I always thought Harold was closer to 20) and Maude, in her 70's. But that was immaterial It was clearly established in the beginning that Harold was a very off-beat sort of person. I totally agree with you. It´s a general problem but also a Hollywood one, I think. Older male actors are still considered sexy and capable of everything, whereas actresses are told what they can´t play anymore after a certain age. There are some exceptions I guess, maybe some progress, but even big stars still have to fight to be considered sexy after 40 or whatever.

Well with age gaps that are that wide there can be issues with unequal power in a relationship. But some of these are illegal and just gross. Besides, your brain isn't fully developed until around 24-25. If you want to get really creepy about it, the best answer would be twilight. It is stated that Edward is over 100 years old while Bella is like 17 when they first meet. I know Edward looks like a 18 year old because vampire nonsense, but still, he's over 100 years old!!! And then you get to Jacob (who's around 18 or 19) when he "imprints" on a newborn baby! A newborn!!!!

Pretty much every other film John Wayne made after 1960 have ridiculous age gaps between male and female leads. "Hatari!" and "Donovan's Reef" are prime examples. "The Alamo" is another good one.

Ah, you kids. It became common knowledge in the 1990's that Catherine Zeta-Jones lied about her age by as much as 10 years, making the Entrapment calculation with Sean Connery off. She claimed to be in her 20's for about 20 years. She could pull it off, so who can blame her?
Otherwise, I definitely agree with Harold & Maude as #1. You mention that it was hard to understand the attraction between a young man (I always thought Harold was closer to 20) and Maude, in her 70's. But that was immaterial It was clearly established in the beginning that Harold was a very off-beat sort of person. I always assumed that when you're that odd, finding anyone who understands and accepts you as you are is intoxicating. I thought it was completely believable and quite touching.

what irritates me is that usually older man/younger woman is thought upon as normal, or even romantic, but older woman/younger man is most likely to be looked upon with disgust or at best as an extraordinary exception.. just look at how often older men get women half their age in films.. whether they be 40 or 60. a 45 year old woman is thought as too old for a romantic interest of a 50 year old man. are we serious?
I totally agree with you. It´s a general problem but also a Hollywood one, I think. Older male actors are still considered sexy and capable of everything, whereas actresses are told what they can´t play anymore after a certain age. There are some exceptions I guess, maybe some progress, but even big stars still have to fight to be considered sexy after 40 or whatever.

What is the freaking deal about age differences in romantic relationships? Consenting adults should be free to love whomever the hell they want. A 20-25 age difference creates no inherent relationship problems, and if the parties involved find each other attractive, well, viva la differencia!
Well with age gaps that are that wide there can be issues with unequal power in a relationship. But some of these are illegal and just gross. Besides, your brain isn't fully developed until around 24-25. So when a 19 year old is with a 54 year old or something, you wonder if they're mature enough to enter a relationship with someone that much older.

For everyone saying, "Love is love," the sentiment is nice and all, but if you ask any adult (especially adult women) about what it was like to date someone who was 35-40 when they were 17-20, they'll usually tell you that their partner was controlling and disrespectful.
What reason is there to date someone 20 years your junior? To control them and make them feel inferior and like they need you, that's why. You're not gonna have a lot in common, but you'll be able to make your partner feel like you're the boss and that they need to obey you because you're older and wiser.
Before I figured this out, when I was barely 18, I dated a guy who was 28, and all he wanted was to tell me what to do. Buy me food and then berate me for being a fatty when I ate it, while still expecting me to be grateful for him buying it. He told me that the decisions I made were stupid and that he should be making them for me. He would pressure me about when I was going to marry him and have his kids, even though he knew I wasn't interested in children, and even if I was, I was too young to even consider that seriously.
Now, I could just say, "oh that's one guy, he's one bad apple in the bunch" but after meeting many women (and a few men) with the same story, it seems to be more of a secret manipulative plan that some creepy older folks have.
This becomes more of an issue the younger the junior party is. In the sense that a 10 year age gap is very small between a 50 and 60 year old, but 10 years is a huuuuge gap between a 15 and 25 year old.
A 30 year old dating a 40 year old? Fine.
A 35 year old dating a 60 year old? Sure.
An 18 year old dating a 45 year old? Not acceptable.

I don't think so. I'm 27 and my husband is in his mid 50s. We have a 29 years age gap. Our is just like the others marriages. We have up and downs. Be more open. The problem we have is that people stare and that rude. They need look pass the age because age don't matter as long the younger one is the right age for marriage. His health is fine but he have a bad back. My health is ok. I get sick a lot and have asthma. Health isn't a issue in our marriage. We been married for 3 1/2 yrs and still going strong.
