Adventure Of The Galaxy Rangers Explored - Forgotten 80's Sci-Fi Western Cartoon

  • The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers might have slipped your attention even if you were there during the 1980s. The series took inspiration from a wide variety of westerns and science fiction films for one spectacular season in 1986. Given that the iconic Tom Cruise movie released only a few months before, there are also surprisingly many references to Top Gun.
We are taking a long look back at the weird idea, peculiar cast and catchy theme tune of Galaxy Rangers in our most recent video posted on our channel today. But really, our new jam is "No Guts, No Glory" by Johnny Vancouver. The show's opening sequence did an excellent job setting the stage. In 2086, aliens visited Earth to give humans sophisticated interplanetary technology in return for their safety from the Crown Empire.

I loved this show as a kid in the 80's. I remember watching the opening sequence the first time, and being completely blown away! As a middle age person now, I am proud to say I own the entire DVD set. This show may be largely forgotten, but I will always treasure it.

Oh I definitely remember this one. This blew me away as a kid with its soundtrack and animation. The 80’s were the glory days of anime, but this one was a cut above the rest because the animation was so off the chain.

Shows like Galaxy Rangers, Saber Rider and Bravestarr essentially paved the way, creating the thirst for Firefly decades later.

    Loved this show.
Gooseman was Clint Eastwood and I loved his powers.
    Neko was Jean Gray.
Doc was great. and the first Technomancer I can remember in a show.
Zachery was the Bionic Man, enhanced.
So it has all the stuff I was already into.
and lets not forget the robo horses and the villains, 'specially the Scarecrow.
This would be a great live action series.

I can guarantee that the full series came out on DVD, as I have both volumes in front of me right now. Volume 1 has Eps 1-32, and Volume 2 has 33-65. They have been released through Koch Vision.

There was also a full release in Germany of the entire series years before the Koch releases, containing both German and English soundtracks. I worked with other fans back in the 90s on a preservation project. If I can find the old CD-Rom we created, I have a couple pics of rare production memorbelia from that collection.

    ok, there are a few things i correct;
the show was initially targeted at the PRE-TEEN and young teens of the 1980's
1 the entire series was released in 2 boxed sets, some of the sets can still be found on amazon
2 jerry orbach played zachery fox, he also played LENNY BRISCOE for over 10 years on the long running series LAW AND ORDER
3 12:57 with the help of the HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER andorian hyper drive
4 13:23 the galaxy rangers is an intergalactic police force and the main special forces team is a group of technologically enhanced operatives.
5 14:41- the term is slaver lords-the slaver lords act as the eyes and ears of the queen of the crown across her entire empire, it allows her to sit in her throne room and be on several planets at the same time and give orders to her robotic troops.
6 15:57 the kiwi are expert geneticists, they genetically engineer plants to grow on alien planets to produce food for the people across the known galaxy.
7 16:16 the planets name is called KIRWIN-pronounced [ K+ear+win ] it is the home world of the KIWI pronounced [ key+wii ]
8 18:52 there WAS a toy line , BUT it wasn't released here in the states you could get the toys in germany, HOW EVER, there was a tie in with arbys, i think, where you could get a kids meal that came in a plastic space ship that had stickers that came with it and it had some of the rangers in them OR captian kid on them, that is all i can remember, you can find the interviews in the boxed sets that will tell you MUCH more.
9 19:12 the monkey creature is called squeegee, he is a semi-intelligent creature like a parrot, he can mimic things he hears.
10 21:34 the painting is supposed to be from Montana NOT alaska.
11 21:53 it is called the emotional electric chair, because if anyone other than a poe mutant touches it, it overloads their minds with a flood of uncontrolled and uncontrollable emotions.
12 22:20 later on we find out that jackie subtract has an identical twin brother who is an inventor called aiden subtract
13 23:19 you need to remember the CGI may be crude by todays standards, BUT, thirty years ago, it was a break through in technology, i am willing to bet that most of the money for the cartoon went to the CGI effects, considering it was a break through technology for the time.

For fans of the songs, check out Steve Overland from the band FM. They were the uncredited band behind "Rangers are Forever" and other songs. Steve has a song out (free on UA-cam) called "Edge of the Universe" that is not from Galaxy Rangers but sounds like a dead ringer for a song from the show. Highly recommended for all fans of the show music.

Where it came from and where it was going is worth a mention. The show sprang from the production company that imported and dubbed the TMS show TechnoBoyagers renamed as Thunderbirds 2086. After the success of that project, they moved on to make an original show, Galaxy Rangers. Many of the voices and CGI style carried over from Thunderbirds 2086. After Galaxy Rangers, the production company floated a concept for another new series about police on a planet of dinosaurs. Concept art published in trade magazines showed these space cops riding the dinos instead vehicles. Dinosaurs were hot at that time but this dino cop show never saw production.

This show looked interesting, but I absolutely do not remember it. This is a bit of a catch-22, but I think it ultimately failed because it failed. It initially failed to draw in audiences, so broadcasters buried it before it had a chance to get a second wind. I think it got pulled before I had a chance to watch it, and the same is likely true for others who would have liked it. I remember Bravestarr, and I remember Sabre Rider, so it's not that I'm forgetting this one as being distinct of other space westerns. I just don't think I played here for very long.

I loved this show, especially the “Gooseman” centered episode like “Galaxy Stranger”. This show would make an awesome sci-fi movie for sure, if done with good writing. Although “Darkstar” has a minor role in the series, she’s essential for Goose’s character development. Oh and the queen of the crown is paying such high bounties for humans, because apparently humans are the only race where one human is enough to power a slaver lord while for each other several are necessary to power on crystal 🤓

A team of varied race members and a strong woman (redhead but with asian hues in her looks) far from the damsel-in-distress trope in the 1980's. Nothing forced, all perfectly smooth. And scripts that never aimed any political agenda (even though race and gender equity problems were touched in the series). That's how you normalize things. The same happened with Captain Planet and even Power Rangers (though the stories in Power Rangers were quite a bit cheesy). When you make a good product, well animated, well written no one cares about stupid things, we just enjoy it and when one of its stories touches certain concepts we just rise an eyebrow, think about the story and the message and probably learn something good from it.
Just like The Last of Us series. Bill and Frank's chapter (yes, the story is different in the game though they still were a gay couple) and Ellie and Riley. They could have been Bill and Frances or Ellie and Ridley and the story would be the same. That's how you insert gender/race/sexuality in a story. Making the story about the characters and their lives not about how they look or define themselves. Just like Galaxy Rangers did.

    • @Allronix
      @Allronix 7 місяців тому +1

Yeah. The cast balance was superb and even many live action series don't match it. Usually, the female and non-white cast members get the "Good Troi Episode" while White Male Lead gets all the meaty story bits. Not GR. Hell, there was a string of Doc and Niko focused episodes in the middle of the series. I think the reason was to accommodate Pries being on Thundercats and Silverhawks while Orbach was filming Dirty Dancing. Still...pretty cutting edge to just say "Cool, then we'll give these two characters some good stuff."
There were a few environmentally themed episodes, like "Space Moby" and "Progress," but even those were handled with more grace and tact than a lot of things currently running. It wasn't "Evil CEO exploiting the poor, oppressed whatever." The CEO in "Space Moby" was a good guy who wanted his employees safe. The whales wanted to eat. In the end, Niko and Zozo negotiate with everyone so they all win. "Progress" had a case where the factory owners didn't realize that while the output didn't seem to be harmful to their species, it wasn't good for the locals. In the end, again, Rangers negotiate with the parties so they all win.

Back in the 80's television worked differently. You didn't just go to ABC with your cartoon and it would be distributed across the country on all ABC channels. Most local television channels were privately owned and were part of an affiliate licensing program with the big name channel producers.
Many cartoons were sold on a package deal to the network affiliates. Without a strong toyline to help the creators grease the palms of the network buyers. The superior cartoon failed, repeatedly. Of course a toyline didn't guarantee a second season. A lot of luck went into were the cartoon was placed in schedule. Too early in the afternoon before the 10 year olds were home from school, or late Saturday morning and it gets preempted by college football or some other local paid for program.

  • @celiovicenteribeirofilho9740

One of the series of cartoons, which are carved in high relief in my memory, that I will always cherish. I would love a reboot, although maybe it would be better to leave the Galaxy Rangers in the past, untainted by modernity that most certainly wouldn't bring the same feeling of the 80's.

  • @DchanZockt

Maybe I'm completely wrong. But somehow it seems as if the series (subliminally) wanted to convey that only Americans can bring law and order into space. And otherwise tyranny and anarchy would rule there.
And isn't it strange that somehow almost all the bad guys are aliens?
Don't get me wrong, I like the series. But this is something that has always struck me.

In most animated series for kids, bad guys tend to be non-human (aliens, robots, demons etc.) so that fighting them with serious weaponry has no negative message. Since the Galaxy Rangers were working far from earth, it also stands to reason that they'd mostly be meeting with aliens.
