No Guts, No Glory, No Season 2: The Failure of the Galaxy Rangers

- Back in the mid 80's a few companies decided that space cowboys were going to be the next big thing.
The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers is an American animated Space Western broadcast in syndication between 1986 and 1989. The series combines sci-fi stories with traditional wild west themes. It is one of the first anime-style shows produced mainly in the United States. At the time it aired, The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was considered a revolutionary children's show.
And so we had Bravestarr, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs and, of course, The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers.
None of them were very successful but at least Galaxy Rangers had the theme song "No Guts, No Glory".

I lived for this show as a kid, and the backstory for “Goose” and the super-troopers was much cooler than the competing cartoons. Also, some stories had darker themes and more maturity than available elsewhere. Sometimes they lost. Zack couldn’t get his wife back. Goose had to abandon his first love to stay with the Rangers. I would SOOOOO Love to see a remake of this show... but would want the same theme song!
@Madison williams Yes, it deserves a lice action, absolutely. But not now, not in this day and age. It would be another nonsensical woke lecturing garbage.
@@The-Man-On-The-Mountain
Sadly true.
Agreed, judging by Hollywood's track record (they still fail the basics like the Becheld test) they most certainly would ______ up royally, and would make Niko yet another clichêd female character. She was a psychic character that was actually useful (already rare in Hollywood productions), she had no huge drawbacks (like physical weakness or sporadic borderline insanity), and she even had a rôle in combat as the walking deflector shield, the TANK of the team! All of that while being the Heart of the Rangers, which is probably all Hollywood would make of her.
> lice action
LOL typo of the month!
ikr?! but i wonder how they will mess it up :(
@@bradsmith1314 Best Galaxy Rangers get WOKEd theory -- 1. Shane Gooseman would become trysexual. 2. Niko would become leader of the team--replacing Commander Walsh entirely. 3. There would be at least two homosexual characters (none of homosexual characters could have villainous tendencies). 4. Characters like O'mega & MaCross would have their names changed as not to offend race or creed groups. 5. 2/3rds of the original backup cast members would be changed to reflect racial diversity. Many of these changes would be acceptable to me in moderation however, WOKE doesn't do things in moderation these days...
Galaxy Rangers was not only the best of the space westerns but one of the best 80s cartoons period.
"No Guts, No Glory" is one of the greatest themes for a cartoon ever, but don't forget the outro theme as well, "Rangers Are Forever" was kick-ass!
Red Magi XVI yes! I loved the into theme!
Back in the heyday of Napster, someone out there actually uploaded these themes. I nearly keeled over in utter shock and prayed they wouldn't cut the transfer as i desperately tried to download them on my crappy dial-up connection. I still have them to do this day burned to disc.
Don't forget about "Out Beyond the Stars"! It only played every now and again, but it was on par with the other two.
The best ever!!
Red Magi XVI fuck yeah
This was my "that show that I loved but no one that I ask seems to remember even existed".
same here, for a while I thought I imagined this as a child and it really wasnt an actul cartoon lol
My friend thought I was talking about Bravestar when I said "no, it's the show with the rangers riding horses at the beginning."
I do remember. I am 42 yo and loved it when I was a kid in the 80's. Greetings from Brazil!
45 from Germany here. Friends kept confusing the shows. "Brave Star, Star Sheriffs, Star Rangers... what's the difference? All those shows have so totally unimaginative names..."
"Wait a second, what's YOUR favorite?"
"Star Wars, DUUHHHH"
"Really? And you complain about unimaginative names???"
For the record, I'm not against Star Wars, one of the first Space Western works. If I had to pick the weakest of the bunch, I'd say "Bravestarr," which wasn't exactly "bottom of the barrel" stuff either. It tried to be as close to _He-Man_ as possible without actually being _He-Man_ (magic in space, badass animal companion, secret powers, some morality at the end...) -- while giving one of the good guys a gun.
I used to watch the show a very good show that doesn't get the appreciation it deserves
Indeed
This is, hands down, my favorite cartoon of the 1980s. Probably my favorite television cartoon of all time.
I'm disappointed that this video did not mention some of the writers of the show (established SF writers, like Brian Daley) or that Zachary Fox was voiced by Jerry Orbach.
You are right my friend, very underrated! Here's the Galaxy Rangers 1st Issue UK Comic fully photographed. ua-cam.com/video/FXN5l5P4-Rc/v-deo.html
A good show, I rewatch it a few years ago.
They had good spaceships and vehicles. Star Wars level.
Galaxy Rangers is the reason I became an animator. When I was young I fell in love with the animation style and the realistic movement of the characters and ships. Thanks for making this video!
TMS always did amazing work!
TMS had such a cool, highly stylized, unique look to their shows especially back then. When they'd use their "A" team on certain episodes....wow.
It is the best production of that age...beautiful, intelligent, joyful and stylish by all means
ViridianG Thank You for that incredible information. As a teenager in the early 80’s my cousin and I had internships at Marvel and DC in Manhattan. I saw the politic’s of the industry first hand. For animation I was even younger living in japan my friends father worked on the Yamato series. It did very well but it seemed the company was more concerned about toy sales than anything else. Hence the giant robot cartoons of the 70’s which generated a ton of money in sales from toys. It seems to remain the same to this day.
@ViridianG thanks for the work you guys put into this series.
Finishing off the story with Zachary finding his wife would have been nice.
You left out how "mature" and respectful of the intelligence of the kid audience the plots for Galaxy Rangers were. I had never heard of it until college, but had friends at university who raved about it and the stories it told. I snatched up the DVDs as soon as they came out on the strength of that, and my friends were absolutely right about how good they are.
I loved this show as a kid and have all the episodes. Never get tired of seeing Goose in action.
Gooseman is The Man. And The Goose.
As a child, this show blew my mind, I hadn't seen anything like it, was so good.
You say it's was a failure, but no guts no glory, no pain no gain! :D
I say without Galaxy Rangers, there would be no Cowboy Bebop.
@@rubix4195 You're going to have to explain that one. Cowboy is just a metaphor in that series for the lawlessness of space, the only thing actually resembling a cowboy or the wild west is Andy in one episode and Big Shot's Punch and Judy. Now Trigun, maybe you could make an argument there.
Hello you!
DUUUDE I see you on every comment section. lol from Asalieri, Silent Rob, etc, etc
I still absolutely adore the intro, its so effin 80s, spacey and just glorious as hell. No Guts, No Glory!
ROCKINEST THEME EVER! I ride for the Rangers. It'd be a great show for a remake.
Um..... X-men
@@FCastle23 X-Men is good, but it's not Rangers good.
Best 80s Cartoon Intro song by a lot!
Best opening theme ever, but never discount the closing theme: Rangers are Forever!
We live in terrible times...
Liked Galaxy Rangers myself. It was far more serious than most 1980s cartoons. Doc & Nikko were the best characters.
Galaxy Rangers is like a more sci fi and serious take on Filmation's Bravestarr.
And that theme song is one of the best for an animated series.
Interesting Robotech tie-in… (or maybe just interesting to me)
The guys who wrote the Robotech novels under the pseudonym Jack McKinney (Brian Daley and James Luceno) also were on the writing team and are credited for several episodes of The Galaxy Rangers.
They even snuck some Galaxy Rangers references into the Robotech novels. One of the authors they did excerpts from on the chapter starts was "Zachary Fox, Jr."
Scott James Luceno is also one of the most well known star wars authors
When I was a kid I always thought the Galaxy Rangers and Silverhawks were in the same universe.
The amount of research you guys do on these episodes blows me away. It’s awesome!
Galaxy Rangers was a favourite of mine, and yes, the theme song was the best there was, is, or ever will be. No guts, no glory!
''No pain, no gain...!''
Its amazing how now a days these shows are just a memory, hopefully its just a glimpse of things to come
Definitely a show that deserves a reboot, if at least to give the main story arc a conclusion.
Galaxy Rangers was absolutely amazing - Gooseman has one of the best power sets and when I was at school lots of the boys had a crush on Niko :o
Gooseman was the original overpowered character. Hit him with anything and he develops perfect defense against it. Thank ghod he was on our side.
Niko was my first Waifu. Also she had the laser shotgun right?
Galaxy Rangers was one of my all time favorites as a kid. I liked that they had continuing storyline and the episodes were sometimes sad / made you think. More adult than other cartoons at the time.
I used to love this show as a kid here in Australia . I still think it's great. I bought the dvd sets online years ago.
NO GUTS, NO GLORY!
Such a great series, quite ahead of its time. Hope they get a netflix remake or something.
I'd always get dibs on Goose at the schoolyard.
Great show _ I still have an old Starlog with an article on the show, and how out of the norm it was for the time. Got the complete series DVDs, and they are great. Watching back, there is so much nuanced humor and clear characterization - Each Ranger is distinct and worthwhile. Man, what a gem!
BEST. THEME. EVER. "Goose, set your axe to stun."
Great vid as always Dan and Greg! Keep up the great work.
The commercial shown for Galaxy Rangers is taken from my local Fox channel in El Paso, TX! KCIK-14 (now known as KFOX 14) showed a lot of the hit (and not so much of a hit) syndicated cartoon shows of the 80s and early 90s! What a rush of nostalgia that was!
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso,
I saw Galaxy Rangers on Channel 14
Those crazy space cowboys were blasting Crown Agents
It was the coolest show I'd ever seen...

Discovered Galaxy Rangers about 10 yrs ago. Now it's one of my favorite 80s cartoons. It should've been a hit.
Still have the theme song as a ringtone.
I used to love this show when I was a kid, and I have a fondness for the theme song. It was a sign of it's time.
Galaxy Rangers was, is, and always will be my favorite. I'm sure it was washed away in a flood of conversations during the day, but I was the guy at NC Toycon who explained that I'd only recently started giving Bravestarr the time of day after overcoming a huge childhood grudge based on Bravestarr getting toys and Galaxy Rangers getting the shaft. Even finding and acquiring the Galoob figures years ago (when I was single and had disposable income) didn't soothe the pain.
I'm now prepared to admit that Bravestarr is pretty good, but it'll never touch my love of the Rangers.
Saber Rider was all right, mainly due to that sweet Peter Cullen voice over for the robot, but it'll always be a distant third.
I loved "Galaxy Rangers" and would put it over "Saber Rider" & "BraveStarr" any day.
SilverHawks?
@@GOGOAKUMAN Yeah, they were alright too.
That ending remark was absolutely beautiful. A fine example of what makes this show so great. Thank you and as always, excellent job.
It might be largely forgotten by most, but this show had a few truly amazing episodes centered around the character of Gooseman. The episodes were so well written that they worked both as stand alone stories as well as building up to a larger story arc. I so badly wanted to see that thread advanced to a conclusion. Sadly, it is never to be and now I know why.
It is this kind of thing that eventually pushed me to favor Japanese anime. At least in those cartoons there tended to be a logical progression to some preplanned end. Whereas American cartoons intentionally tried to remain stuck in an unchanging limbo as they tried to stretch a formula forever and then abruptly stopped when interest waned.
Galaxy Rangers was an awesome show! it had so much potential. Some of the themes in the show were more mature; Such as Goose's whole Super Trooper drama and the fact that Zach Fox's wife was basically held captive (her mind anyways). It was one of those shows, like Robotech, that at the time respected the audience with serious dramatic themes, even though they were kids, and didn't insult their intelligence.
It would've been amazing to see the arc continue and play out.
Saber Rider was decent too, but I didn't get to see it consistently.
BTW, dig your t-shirt in this episode, I have the same one!
I so wanted Galaxy Ranger toys, even played that Bravestarr was called to search for the missing Galaxy Rangers 🤔...he never found them 😢
Back in 2007 or 6 at a convenient I saw prototypes for upcoming Galaxy Rangers action figures, but don’t know what happened 🤨 they never came out 😕
I love all three shows, ever since I saw Battlestar Galactica episode where Apollo gets stuck in that “cowboy” planet and gun fights “red eye” I wanted space cowboy shows 🤔
Great video Mr Larson, Producer Greg 👍🏽✌🏽
The only stuff that got out that I knew of was from They Roy Rogers resturants Also there was an article in Starlog about the time the show aired
Love the show as a kid. Fantastic theme song and the opening scene blew me away.
FINALLY.......!!!!! Been waiting for the Galaxy Rangers episode forever, and to make it even better you used a commercial promo from KCIK TV-14, the old pre-Fox Fox network station in El Paso, Tx! Remember that old promo after they took it off the after school/evening cartoon prime time lineup and moved it to the mornings. Probably making space for M.A.S.K. or something else.
Great stuff Dan, keep fighting the good fight!
I remember watching this show. It had interesting characters and stories. The artwork was also good. It was a pity it did not last long.
BraveStarr and The Galaxy Rangers share the same space in my heart as a child and in my mind as a storyteller. Both cartoons have a lot of cool stories, the first has a Native as the hero, the second has Goose one of the greatest characters I've ever known as a kid. Two characters that for sure inspire me a lot on my writings.
Love the "Re-Animator" running gag, lol, thank you for keeping it up, this HPL fan appreciates it :)
Goose was incredibly cool
Y'aint wrong partner!
Awesome. One of the very, very few legitimately great cartoons of the 1980s.
Hands down one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Goose had one of coolest powers. I wouldn’t mind seeing a live action. But done right.
Best intro song.
Can't wait for Sabre Riders. That theme is still stuck in my head.
God, I loved this show as a kid. *♫No guts no glory!♫*
I LOVED this show! But I swear no one but my brother seems to remember it. Thanks for doing this episode!
This is one of those shows where i saw every episode when it aired. I loved it as a kid! It got very dark at times and had great space battles. I found a few episodes on UA-cam a while back and some of them are just awful, but the good ones are REALLY good. Watch it if you haven't!
THIS WAS IT! This was the series I remember watching as a kid. Okay, so one of the earliest memories I have as a kid was a lunchbox I had in pre-school. It showed four cowboy characters riding on mechanical horses, and for the longest time I couldn't remember what it was. I thought it might've been Star Sheriff and the Saber Riders, but then I watched this episode, recognized the title of the series and that giant tin star on the logo... and it feels like I've just found the holy grail of my childhood past. THANK YOU!
Every once in a while, the Galaxy Rangers theme song wanders into my head, and it's wonderful.
"Kids could choose from superheroes, cyborg superheroes, cops, robocops, superhero cyborg cops, sheriffs, space sheriffs, cyborg sheriffs, and even superhero cyborg space sheriff robot cops, with or without talking horses."
All I know for sure is I LOVE the look of that starship from the start. The bent wings, the long sleek cockpit and nose section, it looks like an X-Wing and I love it.
One of my favorite cartoons. My friends and I acted this show out on the playground in 2nd grade.
We had Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs on Saturday Mornings Cartoons here in sweden. ABSOLUTE LOVED IT. I remember the intro song to this day.
I liked both Galaxy Rangers and Bravestarr. Actually preferred Galaxy Rangers but the channel that carried it in my area aired it 630 in the morning.
AotGR was way better, by all means
I actually loved the Galaxy Rangers and truthfully never knew they had a toy line. It was truthfully better in story structure then some of the other cartoons out at the same time..!
Thanks for the recap - always interesting to see the politics behind these short lived shows
Loved that show. The Scarecrow was straight up creepy, my favorite was Bronto Bear.
I was obsessed with Galaxy Rangers growing up. They showed it every weekend back home in Trinidad and Tobago
I loved the show, watched it on various Saturday morning shows and I even had a Zachary Foxx toy! Brilliant!!
👍 for HAL
This channel is one of the finest youtube suggestions that i received, keep it up.
Now, this is one I was looking for! Best underrated cartoon ever!
For me; I was a young adult when this show came out, but I was huge into cartoons just tut same. So the TV station that aired the show didn't run the full season. Instead; it only ran from sub'll Sept to the beginning of Dec, before getting pulled for the lineup. I remember seeing a video show have the cartoons on their shelves, but never picked them up. I wish I did now; as I never them again since. And yes; that theme song kicks ass!
I fell in LOVE with this show when I caught a random episode one morning in December 1986. I was 20 years old, a big Anime fan, and unfortunately also just got married. I recorded all the episodes on VHS and always intended to bring a live version to the big screen...I failed. But this was a great show. I always tried to get people to watch it calling it The only American Anime(japanimation) worth watching.
Luc Besson would absolutely kill a live action adaptation of Galaxy Rangers.
This needs a Netflix reboot. Anything beats Godzilla Earth, right?
If a reboot was happening and was high-quality--Kiefer Sutherland as Zachary Foxx or go home.
Setting the bar real low there i see?
Thanks for doing this topic! Galaxy Stranger is still one of the best stand alone episodes of all cartoons -good old fashion Western. Taped it on VHS when I was a child and bought the collections when it came out on DVD years later. This and the origin of Optimus Prime (War Dawn) and Dungeons & Dragons are episodes I still watch as adult today and the stories still hold up. Enjoy your research and delivery of the information in an entertaining manner!
I like how it was Clean Shaven Dan during the video, then Burly Dan during the ad.
Another great trip down memory lane. I was a big fan of this show; Goose was my favorite character. I also watched Bravestarr, but liked Galaxy Rangers more
Dan and Greg you videos are awesome, bring me so much joy! Carry on legends!
I absolutely love the show as a kid, the humour was far more adult than many realized. It had some pretty serious storylines to.
No guts, No glory!
I was so happy when it came on DVD. My old VHS tapes are slowly deteriorating.
Talk to me Goose. ....
Still one of the Best 'TopGun callbacks' intros from my childhood. 👏👏👏👏
"See you on the other side Goose"
No guts no Glory ✌
My favorite after-school cartoon of my youth (just ahead of Orbots and Visionaries). Thank you for doing it justice!
In my head I still sing the line "No guts, no glory" before going into a tough meeting.
Best opening song! NO GUTS, NO GLORY!
YES!!! I STILL watch the DVDs! I remember discovering this show when I ordered a VCD of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors back in early 2000 and the guy sent me Galaxy Rangers instead. He apologized and told me I’d love it anyway and he was right! That kick ass theme song, bad ass animation...dude you keep my childhood alive with all your vids. Keep it coming!
I sure hope there will be a live-action movie adaptation of Galaxy Rangers.
The Donkey + E.T. part gives a whole new meaning to the line from the movie "Eliott... oooouuuuuuchhhhh".
Knew all three of them, GR was always my favorite for its mature as hell tone for a cartoon! That scarecrow Niko was haunted by scared me shitless! Their creativity portraying the alien races was amazing too. The mutant powers of Goose made him my favorite, his soloadventures against his former colleagues super soldiers deserved a spin off cartoon... Oh, andI liked Sabers too, surprised anyone remembers them!
Loved Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers from the moment I saw it on UK TV as a kid. Theme was and remains one of the best of ANY Cartoon - so much so I made sure it was part of the playlist for Edinburgh Comic Con.
This could and should have been a bigger hit but it was during the high point of TV/Toy Cartoons so there was an already busy schedule.
Such a under rated show. This brought me a tear to my eye. I forgot about this show. Need to buy it now.
I felt this video review underrated it as well...
@@soccerojdoj yep
I loved the theme so much I used a small boom box (yeah boom box) to record it from the tv one afternoon. NO GUTS NO GLORY was played repeatedly....
The theme song still pumps me up any day. Please, do a video on the "Swat kats"
They truly were a radical squadron.
Every single word you said is tailored to my born on date. 1977. Please keep up the good work. Thank you so much for existing at the same time I do.
The programme was quite good and deserved more of a chance. I enjoyed it at the time and still watch them again when I can. The animation and writing were solid for their time.
Not just the theme song too, it was filled with great music. even a lot of the background themes were really good
My favorite cartoon show as a kid, the theme song is the best of all time, used to watch it in Spanish cause I grew up in Mexico, it was called "las aventuras de los guardianes de la galaxia"
Dan and producer Greg seemed to have so much fun shooting this one. Dan is smirking all the way through after he breaks :(
... So when will you cover Peter Panand the Pirates? That also had a kick ass theme song, entirely instrumental. It also had an international toyline that was pretty successful!
Another great forgotten series. Tim Curry was born to play Captain Hook!
As I recall, when the Marvel UK Galaxy Rangers comic ended, they actually continued it as a second strip in the Thundercats comic, which was in decline itself by that point and running out content to print.
Loved this show as a kid. I remembered it had two badass theme songs, no guts no glory, and rangers are forever.
I saw it in its first run in 1986. LOVED it. Bought the DVDs as soon as they were made available. (Had the VHS tapes before that.)
This was THE BEST cartoon back in the day! I was late to school every day so I could watch it....I lived across the street from my school, btw 🤦
YAY, you finally got to it! I remember a while back you said it was on the plan to cover and by now I just thought you forgot about it. One of my favorite shows back then with one of my favorite ship designs.
You guys are awesome. The Galaxy Rangers was a favorite of mine!
Its about time Dan, thank you.
Never saw this show back in the 80's as a kid. I do remember Brave Star, Voltron, Inspector Gadget, etc...so many shows. Guess it was a bad time slot.
Could have sworn you'd already made this... _[searches UA-cam history]_ Nope; must have gone wiki-diving after your Bravestarr episode.
(Surprised you didn't mention Jerry Orbach's role as Lead Ranger and opening-monologue narrator)
Nobody puts Galaxy Rangers in a corner.
OMG I never realized that about the opening narration!
No mention of the early cgi elements that made this cartoon unique.
I remember catching Galaxy Rangers as a kid, that theme song its burned in my head like the Thundercats and Bionic Six.
What an awesome thing to wake up to!
I think I commented on another episode that you guys should cover this show and here we are!!
One of my favorite cartoons ever!
Oh ,you guys made my day with this video ,this was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid,but I didn't know it ran for only one season ,it was awesome show.
Good video! I loved this show back in the day. Awesome theme song and animation.
What a great channel! Sending me all my nostalgia feels. I liked the Galaxy Rangers theme song best but Bravestaar had cooler powers
Keep Bookin them Dano! This was a fantastic insight into a fun and mostly forgotten cartoon. Keepem comin! Till All Are One!
I had a VHS with a few episodes on it as a kid, Galaxy Rangers was one of my favorites!
