"Not a necessity but nice to have" this is such a powerful reason for this kind of thing to exist. Things that the manufacturer doesn't think are worth the time and cost, or things they don't think of because there's a limited number of engineers. This kind of project can make cool new features available, and who knows, maybe the idea takes off.

well, the X1E is NOT safe on a network, and still must be online to update. I am not an expert on network security, but I can at least verify that this is clean when it comes to connections!

I asked this question in a Op thread but you are running someone else's code. How can you be sure it is safe? What security holes are in it?
      "beware of Greeks bearing gifts"
We have no clue what this software can do. And keep in mind the initial code can be updated OTA so who knows that the payload could be later.
Rogue dev in the group wanna nuke a machine who will catch that?
Code disable any of the fancy iptables routing.. How can you tell?
Bugs, glitches, crashes and security.. All in a group giving you free software...
I argue we are in more insecure boat running this code.

There are so many [great] free programs that are now scamware. Winzip, ccleaner, avast Aethers2x ad infinitum. Not all open source software is clean either.
Look you have a personal relationship with these guys and you trust them, but circumstances change. We don't know them. They haven't introduced themselves(outside of 2 on 3d printing nerd)
They haven't shown others their code to test. We dont know what deal they have with Bambu.
We don't know if anyone has pen tested their code.
They can update OTA and that means any payload can be installed, that is code that may not may ever touch github or be subject to inspection since it has Bambu firmware in it and we have to trust what they put in? But even if it is open we are assuming someone is checking 10s of thousands of lines of code to find an issue.
See what I mean? I don't know how big the team is or who is contributing what, so rightfully, people should be skeptical.

While the kernel-level IP block is certainly the best part of the firmware, I can't help but really like the idea of being able to map commands to the physical buttons. I still wouldn't give Bambu Lab money directly, but this firmware at least makes the idea of buying a used Bambu printer a remote possibility for me (although the Phrozen Arco might end up being the better choice due to its size anyway).
Perhaps even better than the IP blocker is that the X1 Plus team puts users first, unlike Bambu Lab which puts Bambu Lab (and their unspecified partner entities) first.

The reason I ask is when you get support from Bambu, they usually ask for the log files and it's enough of a PIA to get them as it is. Sure, they may refuse support if you're running Plus, but if you're having a hardware issue, maybe not, and making it easier to get those files for them would be nice.

I was looking more for a 15-20 minute edited presentation on a bunch of popular printers or printers you think we should keep an eye on, with like key features that are either positive or negative for a printer and why. As long as Bambu Lab printing firmware sources are not available for editing, the printer is closed source, X1Plus or OEM. Moddable linux layer doesn't change it.
As it is (and, without breaking BL IP, which X1Plus team avoids, as it will be), one cannot alter or modify the printing (e.g. motion or stepper driving). Useful and fancy stuff can be added, but only within the limits of what closed base allows.

well, you can defeat the X1Plus firmware entirely by removing the SD card but the machine will yell at you. It is unlikely to be where this is a full install on the machine, it makes way more sense to run on the SD card. You can easily print a cover that will block SD card access on the machine if that is your prerogative.

Those screens arent cheap @ $150 bucks
How long has someone tested this?
What kind of class of mem card is recommended? (size/speed/class)
What speeds does the card slot use?
What happens if the card slot fails during operation / pull it out?
Will this cause print head crashes or other issues?
Does the bbl firmware kick in immediately if the card fails and the parts are heated?
Will the printer cool the printer print head/bed? will it safely shut down?

I have a high endurance card because I found the Bambu before the X1Plus firmware to kill cards.
I have been running it nonstop for a month now with no issues. I use a Samsung high endurance 128gb card. Not much speed is needed, a normal card should be fine.
As for if the slot fails or its pulled out the print immediately will stop as the firmware is missing. The machine would reset within 10 seconds and it would automatically reset temps and such to 0. I do not believe it can be recovered. I have never had this happen.
If there is no card it will ask you what you want to do, how you want to boot, be it stock, stock without some features, or install a new version of X1Plus.
The machine will safely shut down as far as the machine goes but it could damage your card in theory. it is basically like pulling a hard drive from a computer.
No wear is present on the screen that we can see. It is WAY less than if you have it recording your prints, that EATS memory cards lol

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius 4 місяці тому +2

Unless you're constantly plugging and unplugging the card, there'll be no additional wear on the slot itself, and as the OS runs from the card so you may never remove it again (you can FTP files to it) it may be that there's *less* physical wear.
In terms of flash wear on the card itself, the same recommendations for cards would apply as for something like a Raspberry Pi. The ideal would be a high endurance card with active wear levelling.

I do FTP files off and over (thank you Ashley print shop)
While I am out of warranty I have never needed to use it either. The X1+ team seem like good folks but I have zero issues with my printer and no issues they can fix while adding potential to damage to the printer.

No, its the heatbed cord potentially catching fire. I will go into it more on Friday. It is a massive engineering oversight that puts users at risk

It's clear that Bambu are trying to saturate the market with all the sponsored advertising. To me, it's just the hot new thing. Wait a year and you'll see they are just another business and the bottom line always wins.

Well you wont find any sponsored advertising from Bambu here lol. The Bambu community is convinced Grant is out to get them despite still recommending their machines to the people that it would be good for and Bambu certainly hasn't a great relationship with him lol.

What about Board UART connection? Is possible somehow make firmware backup copy, lets say 1.7.0 version, after update and if need downgrade like nothing happen? or even better, share copy to others to can downgrade anytime and dont need use fancy "FIRMWARE R" when come out. I think, is some how way around it. @@3DMusketeers

@@3DMusketeers I’ve been seeing videos on and off describing the x1plus and its features. Last video I saw was a sit down with the creators walking though the firmware. Until it’s out it’s like the other videos from months ago.
