The Murder of legend Dave Shultz was most detrimental to the advancement of USA wrestling. Dave spoke Russian and other languages and took ideas from all around the planet and brought them to team USA

I wrestled for one of Dave Shultz top students and he was waay more focused on technique as opposed to conditioning. I never felt that my conditioning wasn't good enough for a match

Gable won not only as a wrestler but also as coach of the Hawkeyes. Whatever he was doing, he was doing it right. If you really think you know better and can do better, do it. That’s what I love about wrestling. None of the talking and bullshit matters except what happens on the mat. The circle of truth

Getting out of bed early in the cold and running 5 miles has nothing to do with increased knowledge of wrestling moves. Being tough and being smart are different skill sets.
    * Perhaps Gable focused too much making tough guys tougher, just like him. My wrestling coach was the same. Never kick a winning horse in the ass and success breeds success. Later, only when we reflect back many years are we critics and say there is a better method.

Ya but gable had great technique as a coach too.its just the press focused on his conditioning

So it was just a fluke all those Iowa wrestling championships under Gable. That's one of the funniest things I heard almost as funny as Cael Sanderson is the Greatest Wrestler ever.

This idea that Iowa wrestling under Gable wasn't technical and didn't produce technical wrestlers is garbage. Askren is smarter and better than this.

I'm not exactly an Iowa fan but yeah, you're right.

Am I missing something? A win is a win. You can be a strong conditioned brute, or slower with more technique and strategy. There's no better way to win or worse way to lose. Gable only lost like one time, he never had to get better. Askren is too proud of himself for his lackluster physique and conditioning. That's why he got destroyed in the UFC, he moved 2 miles per hour.

huh He literally means they didnt get wins internationally cuz of this.

Ya I wrestled in the seventies and if I had to do it again I would have worked on moves more but back then before computers the only moves you could learn were at camps russ hellickson brought back alot of moves from Russia ya gables approach wasnt the key

    • @NatiHighLife
      @NatiHighLife 3 роки тому

Russ’ camp was awesome, but mine was in early 2000

I wonder if because of UA-cam, wrestlers will be more homogenized. It used to be you had to go to a camp to learn advanced moves and techniques to get an edge, but now there's UA-cam.

Young athletes tend not to train enough but I believe the number one problem elite athletes in any sport is they train to hard before meets my roommate was national junior college champ and the week before the meet Paul Nguyen did little he dint even workout but he was rested

Gable has good technique obviously just look at his videos on UA-cam. Intensity and great cardio is apart of wrestling too. With technique now being the best it’s ever been it’s easy to say Gable wasn’t as technical when guaranteed today he would be because the sport evolves. All are important like people are saying on here.

Ya i think that young kids should focus more on fun techniques and i wrestled in coollege and biggest mistake overtraining and i think in most sports the elite athletes tend to overtrain to close to the big meets not intensity should stay tough

I respect Askren’s technique and funk but he sounds like an ass.. Askren didn’t invent anything.. Moves go in cycles .. It’s what is popular or being used at the time..Look at the Hi-C .It was being used decades ago but in the 80s a lot of wrestlers we’re going low singles cause that’s what John Smith was doing. Mostly every good wrestler has a Hi-C in their arsenal.. I have given thought to old school versus new school wrestlers and techniques too and have to say Askren is wrong and just talking shit. I say this because Gable would wrestle live with his wrestlers well into his 40s and whip their asses..He was beating the best wrestlers in his room and the best wrestlers in the country as an old man as far as wrestling goes. The best college programs and coaches today are coaches that wrestled under Gable or were Hawkeyes.. Theses wrestlers and programs are still using those techniques and winning national titles.I enjoyed watching Askren in college but I have to say I lost a lot of respect for him .. He has turned into a WWE character who sounds like a clown.

I was a Dan gable fanatic and he is still my number one hero but if I did it again I would of been more of a move specialist and not over trained less is more more or less sometimes not always not if it’s d day
