I was there, a week shy of my 11th birthday. Can honestly say I was terrified, don’t remember a great deal apart from other fans saying lots of Rangers fans had knives in the Holte end and the 2nd goal going in and the pitch invasion that followed. Outside afterwards was like a war zone and I don’t think I was ever so grateful to see my house again!.
My old man was at this game, and he mentioned alot of clubs have came to villa park and claimed to have taken the holte end. He said many came on but never took it, however on this day he said rangers didn't just take the holte end, they took the ground.
I went to this game as a 10 year old with my Scottish neighbour and son who was 11. Even my neighbour was scared and moved us from the lower Trinity Road to the upper. Has a great view of the game and pitch invasion, but it was a bit hairy after the game
I was there. I've never been so scared in my life as when they abandoned the match and told us to leave the Witton End (Rangers had taken the Holte End at about 8 o'clock in the morning) and to leave as quickly as possible. People were running with little kids in their arms, and some of the people running alongside us were coppers! The Rangers fans were locked in the Holte End but made human chains over the wall like ants and jumped to the ground throwing bricks and FULL beer cans. There were plenty of beer cans because the Rangers fans had broken into all the off licences. The buses stopped running at about 11 in the morning. We heard a bus driver saying that the Rangers fans hadn't smashed the windows but had unscrewed the complete windows and were throwing them at passing cars and pedestrians.
Buses didn't stop running at 11am I caught one about 1'30 pm was full of them swearing and abusing the Pope frightening women and children on their way home from town. Not tough just mongrels
