I prefer manual in most cases, but actively looked for a DSG when I bought my GTI because they're just so damn good.
People have serious insecurity issues with driving an auto. Like people will make fun of them or not treat them as equal car enthusiasts.
But I really believe in most cases, if people let that shit go they would also realize how good a modern dual clutch or well made auto like in the new Supra can be.

I don’t think people should ever be hesitant about getting what they want. I just genuinely don’t understand how someone who loves driving wouldn’t really miss having a manual. I also have to reflect on the fact that I work from home and have for a long time….so my incidences of stop and go traffic are few (so I don’t experience the least fun scenario to drive a manual that much)
Still, when I did last have a (nearly) hour commute, I drove a Miata and a wrx (both manuals)

I think you said it all around the 17 minute mark, "you can use all of the car, more often". That's a lot of fun to be able to work the car without doing dangerous and stupid speeds. I've owned an M3, Mustangs GT, WRX STi. All of them fun, but you couldn't get into them hard without getting into speeds that are only fit for a track, and how often do you end up at a track, a few times a year? At least for me that was the case. 90% of the time I felt like I was putting around, swallowing fuel and not really able to use the car. Even spirited drives felt like that cars were barely stretching their legs. Cars like this and the GTI are perfect for daily use. Lots of fun and very engaging, at least for earlier versions of the GTI, not sure about the current one. For the Si, ownership is super easy on the wallet and has a massive level of utility and the ease of knowing that the build quality will be solid. They may not have the flashy power numbers or stats, but they are the most fun just because you can use all it has and not be doing anything too crazy.

I own the 22 si myself and summarized:
    1. Paid markup but it’s the only 2022 car for the price range that has great reliability and aftermarket support.
    2. I commute 20-30 miles every day through traffic. The car gives me ~31.5 mpg
    3. This car in the orange or blue colorway stands out and looks so nice as a commuter car.
    4. The fun that I have going on the highway and twists and turns while shifting is what makes this car worth it.
    5. With a 7 year warranty. You don’t have to worry about ANYTHING going wrong with This car. Your wallet is only for parts !
To me this is the perfect daily driver / car enthusiast machine.

I trust your judgement and completely agree that it is such a great enthusiast-daily. I feel totally okay beating the snot out of it and know it’s not going to break. I should also add that my trade-in was a 2014 Porsche Cayman with PSE,PTV,PASM, 6-speed manual, extended leather, and Bose. Two small children meant I needed something with backseats. This is so refreshing and super thrilled you love your car. Part of what makes a car fun is the anxiety factor. Are you worried about fuel costs, maintenance, breaking down, etc. Daily drivers for enthusiasts have a tough job because they need to be fun but also stress free. Cars like the Civic Si are perfect for that. And every time we buy oil for our ‘people’s car’ GLI we have to hunt down expensive German spec’d oil. It all adds up. But you have found the right combo with your other drives. Nice job.

As a new owner - 1,100 miles in a couple weeks - I find it quick enough. My other car is a 981 boxster s and I find them both fun for different reasons.
Have always loved hondas and glad I’m back in one.
Sold my 2017 brz (which I loved). And part of the reason I got the si was that the gr86/brz was so hard to get. Figure I’ll own this for three years and let the hype die down on the 86 and perhaps get that …..or not. The Honda is great.
Also - gr corrolla or civic type r will be easily a year away from attain ability (as you’d said) and dealer markup before that will be nuts!!

Civic SI is def up there for when I get my license and can buy my first car. It just looks so damn good for being a civic. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the maroon-ish colored seats, and the artificial sound. I’ve had my 2022 Civic Si for two weeks and can’t stop talking about. This car puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. This thing is a hoot. Fuel economy is fantastic the interior doesn’t make you feel like a bum and the cost of this car is the cheapest I’ve spent in the last 20 years. You can’t help but think that car designs have gone mental with over complicated infotainment systems and boat loads of electrical features. The Civic is simplicity and drivers enjoyment in spades. Premium gas is $6 a gallon by where I live and I went to the grocery store and it was $200 for a weeks worth of food. My take on the manual. I wouldn’t say that my manhood is pinned to driving a manual, but my driving persona is. There’s a modicum of pride associated with “getting it” and carrying the banner of “save the manuals” with other believers. If - as you say - someone wants to just jump in a car and forget about everything and drive…. Then they don’t sound like driving enthusiasts to me. There’s nothing wrong with that, but driving for the pure fun of it seems incomplete to me without a manual (at least in a sports car or sports sedan (and usually most everything else I’d like to drive).
The emergence of (admittedly) great dual clutch autos have made this also a generational thing…..as more often, younger drivers focus only on the acceleration advantage w the dual clutch vs the engagement advantage with a proper manual.
Perfect example of this dynamic is in this civic. So glad Honda still only offers the Si in a manual. It would be a far lesser car without it.

I'm getting 45+mpg with it for my 1.5 hour commute to work every day and i love it. 5 doors for future kids, huge boot space for taking my dog along. You dont see many civics on the road in UK, i know in the US they are the quintessential daily drive econobox. In the UK its Golf GTIs/Rs, Seat Leon RSs, Ford Focus/fiesta STs. After test driving the civic with its short gearbox i bought it the next day. In the UK it actually feels kinda exotic which is probably crazy to americans. I love it so much that after the warranty ends, i will definitely be stage 1ing it. and maybe in the future get a Type R since the 2023 one will hopefully drive the prices down.

I just love how you Americans call 200hp slow, the average hp from a new car sold in the EU is 160hp. From my point of view anything that gets 9sec to 60 or less is enough and below 7s is pretty quick. But i guess that is also because your cars are a lot cheaper, so you get more power for the same price. The price differences are just ridiculous, take the mustang gt which starts at 37 000 USD, and in the Czech Republic (where I am from) a base GT starts at 62 000 USD.

This has been super helpful. After 20+ years of driving high-mileage beaters (many of which I loved), finally getting ready to pull the trigger on my first new car. The only manual car I've owned was a GD3 Fit which was super fun and VERY cheap; right now I'm driving it's polar-opposite GX470, which I also love and it's still very luxurious as a 15-year-old truck, although it's not awesome getting 14mpg on your daily. Though I really like the Elantra N, the sheer usability of the Civic Si seems pretty fantastic, and despite the higher price, a manual Integra seems like a great car for me and I'm confident that it will be fun and practical like your Si. Hatchback for some storage when needed, the amenities on the Canadian-spec Si that we don't get, somewhat reserved styling -- it really seems to tick all the boxes. I could watch you drive this thing all day (and as an RI resident, its super nice to see how this car soaks up and/or avoids New England potholes 😂).
