I used two large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphones and two small-diaphragm omni-directional microphones. The two large-diaphragm microphones were suspended 6 feet above the drums. The first aiming directly between the 32" and the 29" (Right Channel) and the second aiming directly between the 26" and the 23" (Left Channel). The piccolo drum does not require its own mic because of its presence in comparison to the other drums. The omni mics were placed on a 4-foot-wide microphone bar, suspended around 10 feet in the air, and placed 15 feet in front of the timpani. I was in a rather large, and well treated, rehearsal room. The condenser mics pick up articulations as well as the pitch of the drums. The omni microphones compliment this sound by picking up the resonance of the timpani and the room while also providing a good stereo image.
Hi there! I used three sets of mallets throughout the piece: First movement: Cloyd Duff #3 Second Movement: Soft/Hard Cork Core Third Movement: Cloyd Duff #6 (All mallets made by Freer Percussion)
Amazing 🤩
How did you get good audio recording for timpani? I could never.
