The biggest thing to remember is you don't need a van to experience a van lifestyle. Going car camping and enjoying time with others is something you can do in any vehicle. You don't have to get caught up in the nostalgia to live the lifestyle
Wouldn't that be uncomfortable? Considering it's a smaller? And less space? And what do you meen nostalgia? Van life is about being on the road full time..finding yourself and true happiness..what's the point of going camping for a while when your going to be back at it Monday morning?
barcasimple thats what van life is for some of them. They don't live in their vans full time they still have to go back to work on monday but they spend their weekends going road tripping surrounded by people they love. All I'm saying is you don't need to think you have to have a van to be able to achieve that
People do not have a choice. To survive they live in vans.Live the Okies in the great depression .Putting lip stick on a van is like putting lip stick on a pig.Poop in a box, sleep on the side of the road.China has your job.Bank took your home.
I can't understand that..how can anyone take mini vacations creating fantasy of allusions thinking there happy..but when in reality..they have to get back to work..That's not finding happiness..that's trying to escape a reality of you being a slave everyday for the rest of your life..all I'm saying is If you have no responsibilities then live free ass much. As you can..and actually live and be happy..
Very cool video, I bought a VW Eurovan Camper last year and I love it. I have been traveling to several places here in California and I'm loving the freedom of going anywhere I want and having everything you need in a compact space and not having to spend a dime on hotels. I constantly have people come up to me to ask me questions about my van and if I would want to sell it. Two weeks ago I was in Santa Barbara for three nights and the hotel rooms were $200 per night, it's so nice to park anywhere and have a great night sleep in the van. I recommend to everyone out there to give the van life a chance, it's so much fun and and you feel a sense of freedom which is incredible.
Thanks for sharing your excellent video. I've had many vans over the years and always enjoyed converting them myself. I haven't been a full timer but, every van video that I watch keeps getting me closer to making that jump.
i am 14 and for the past 2 years all i want to do is vanlife. but so addicting watching these video and seeing the good and the bad side of vanlife. and hopefully by the time i turn 18 i will be ready for a vanagon and ready to live in the van. LOVED THE VIDEO!!
Nice production. Thanks for sharing. Before owning a van I also enjoyed vanlife, camping in my Tercel or Civic and before that our family enjoyed vanlife in a popup trailer with some canoes. I think the point is to detach, get away, meet some new people and shrug off the stresses of life for a few days. We work to live, not the other way around.
This was wonderful! Gave a realistic look at life on the road. With everything that could go wrong though I still think it's a wonderful option. I am in the selling-all-my-stuff stage and waiting impatiently to get out there! In the meantime I am watching, reading everything I can on that life. Thanks!
I dont have a van or ever had a van..hell I use to think vans were sooo boring and without personality but as I get older I find myself drawn to vanlife. I dont know what it is but I want a van hahaha I really enjoyed this video.
+My Damn Channel the force is strong and the momentum will build if you continue to focus in that direction.....i dreamed and envisioned a van for several years........bought a chevy astro van one week ago.

+My Damn Channel Me too.But yeah, it's called a propaganda..Another way of control...unfortunately what ever they say to you you do need money to live like that..maybe you should open a U tube channel..

NICE! I love meeting other westy owners on the road and sharing stories. I know what your mean about breakdowns it is always in the back of your mind. I have updated and upgraded everything (almost) on my 87 and I still get a gremlin or two every so often but I will never give up my van. ENJOY
That was truly inspiring man! I'm just home from buying my first van, the trip home was pretty rough. We didn't see it when we were inspecting it but when you indicate left the head lights dims down to almost completely off, no other faults have risen their ugly head yet thankfully so we'll keep on vanning for now #vanlife ;)
Awesome video! Been camping & traveling my entire life and I absolutely agree about the next generation being better if their folks raised them traveling & being outdoors...
Awesome uplifting video! ''All you need is time.'' I just had to comment, I literally comment twice a year on a video. I've done the sailboat thing, think the van life is calling my name.
I just recently got a 5th wheel with the idea of traveling. I have no real plan other than to see where I end up. I will be pleased if my experience turns out anything similar to what your describing.
I totally get this. I was raised with VW's so understand the working on them. What I resent here a little bit is the #vanlife hashtag being all about VW vans. I am very partial to my chevy diesel. Sure I miss the breaking down all the time but hey I can fake that part. Love to hang out with you guys sometime. :)
Logan Lake :):) They are a lot lighter than my Chevy van though. I bet you could get a subaru engine in there for more power. I saw a buildup for a beetle they did with a 400hp Sub engine.
Saving up for my Van now. Just give me the cheapest van to pull the back seats out and put a bed back there and I am set! My job allows me to work 4days on and 4days off. Can't wait to use that time to save up and explore the roads around me :)
I dnt plan on living out of my truck but I'm building it for travel, like the idea of just bein able to pack and go, not having to find a place to sleep. I'm building a 90 bronco, older truck that I don't mind beating up, it's a older ford so plenty of aftermarket parts, 4x4 to help me get to harder areas so I'm happy with my Lil build so far
Cannot wait to get my 1980 Westy up and going. Doing a air-cooled to diesel conversion. Have the engine and van but in need of the mounting system and that is being acquired next week. Have totally gone through the van by removing all interior and cleaned and repaired to a not showroom condition as Im going to use the van not show it. I hope to see many of the people in the vanagon world on the road. Gregg

This looks all so nice, romantic and blah blah. I lived for 2 Years in my VW Bus - becasue I could not rent an apartment from my small wage: This is all fun and games until winter, when blankets ect. wont get dry again - and you freeze tight at the wall of your VW Bus. And you come deep frozen to work for months. And promoting doing that with children: Its not healty for an adult - in winter with no or only a small heating it can kill them. I still live for some weeks in my bus - but T3 Sycro parts are expensive as hell - where do they get the money from? WHERE? They dont seem to work ...
+Spacemarine1976 They do work. At least they said this year they're only going to be on the road for 3 months, which leaves 9 months for working. She has a doctorate, so I'm going to guess she's in academia, where she can take off 3 months for summer.
Suggestions for good careers to survive living in the van full-time while traveling cross country and still maintaining a stable income by myself? I'm 20 with a westy and can't stand my full time job as a restaurant manager...
Possibly try looking down the isle of online career options, I don't know any myself, but from other similar videos I've seen that seems to be the way to go
Love the video. Really impressive edditing. I especially love that the originator of #vanlife is doing a 4x4 truck w/camper. We Live the "vanlife" in our homemade truck camper. Love, love, love instagram. NEVER did I think I would say I love any form of social media, but the people we meet, and people we hope to meet via it is so cool. incase you care 😉 @the_traveling_together_journal
If I buy a van...sorry to say it won't be a VW...if they're "guaranteed" to break down, I'll have to pass. =) how about I tag along in a Chevy or Ford van?
Nora Steel Toyota Previa is the way to go. Tough truck type, simple solid rear axle. Lots of Toyota parts in the U.S. Some are all wheel drive. Still gotta learn basic maintenance & repairs for boonie fixes. Murphy's Law is always in effect.
It's 20+ year old vans that are bound to have issues at times. It's not a VW specific thing. It's an old car thing. If you buy a new VW it's way more reliable just like all the other brands out there. VW is actually known for being very reliable and good build quality. If you buy an old well used Land Rover, Jeep, Mercedes or whatever you will also have to do work on them from time to time. It's just part of owning an old vehicle and taking it through some hard stuff.
funny, yes 30 year old engines that have sat for the last ten years break. Its kind of lack of information thing. the majority buy an older van the previous owner grew tired of it. The van sat for 10 years before they could finally sell it. the new owner starts driving it to death without doing 30 years of neglected maintenance. A lot of people now are doing engine swaps, This has changed the game entirely you have double the horse power or more, reliable modern engine. the Van drives the way it should have from the start. your chevy Van or ford when its 30 years old with 300,000 miles is going to break. Vw's hold their Value. I don't know why but I love driving mine .. it literally makes me feel good. If I am bored or whatever I go some place and do a short trip in my VW I enjoy driving it that much. it looks cool has a good stereo, If I bump into someone I know I can make a coffee on the spot and have a conversation. Every trip I have made in my VW I have met really cool people in a VW doing trips that make me say I want to do that. year long of more cross country trips, some on shoe string budgets some with money. in the end its up to you, for me its more about the travel then the vehicle but I do enjoy my VW.
start shopping on Craigslist, buy a VW, pour tons of time and some cash into it. You can get help on Facebook VOG or The Samba. there are ways to live some people do seasonal work, others work for awhile then take off for a year or two. Some work from their Van they have some skill usually computer stuff that makes it possible for them to work remotely. I would suggest to not quit your job until you have the Van you want built.
Wonder if the kids are home-schooled then? I would love to have my kids grow up like that and being able to spend that much time with them, really no idea where the money comes from though.
You can't really work on a T4 on your own, T25 (Vanagon) is a cheaper initial purchase, and I think the suspension sits a little higher which means you can go farther on your camping adventure :)
The atlantic really stepped up there game with this video. Really enjoyed it. Thanks!
The biggest thing to remember is you don't need a van to experience a van lifestyle. Going car camping and enjoying time with others is something you can do in any vehicle. You don't have to get caught up in the nostalgia to live the lifestyle

Van life is the best. Lighting recommendations? People say Lumiy Lightline 1250 LED desk lamp because its big on light, low wattage, and compact.
Awsome guys!

I think everyone loves the design of the Vanagon. Only if it was more reliable.

excellent

I think the saying is 10,000 hours, not 10,000 times. And you've probably reached that benchmark!
"Not willing to work with your hands" I'll commit to having a trip not full of breakdowns and AAA. #vanagonlife!

Every trip I have made in my VW I have met really cool people in a VW doing trips that make me say I want to do that. year long of more cross country trips, some on shoe string budgets some with money. in the end its up to you, for me its more about the travel then the vehicle but I do enjoy my VW.
You guys are beautiful god bless, I'm hoping to buy a van to travel with my French bulldog I'm a barber i could cut anywhere
I can build or fix anything. please tell me how this lifestyle is possible
start shopping on Craigslist, buy a VW, pour tons of time and some cash into it.
They should have interviewed a 35-year-old divorced motivational speaker for this.
Anyone else notice him pissing out of he's tree house??? 7:18
Imagine what he said to the camera crew or what the camera crew said to him in order to get that shot
OH yes, IMAGINE THAT MY FRIEND!
"You don't need six figures; you just need time."

that old T3....why do you guys don´t own an T4 ? Only because of the style ??
You can't really work on a T4 on your own, T25 (Vanagon) is a cheaper initial purchase, and I think the suspension sits a little higher which means you can go farther on your camping adventure :)
