People sit in their cars and give up sometimes. They forget how to drive. And sometimes, they ride on our sirens getting past heavy traffic. Sometimes the line is so long, the head of the line has no clue there is an emergency or police vehicle waiting on them or the traffic flowing has no clue why cars are trying to get out in front of them. This is one of the reason why it is very necessary that we have Several hundred units stationed throughout the city in hundreds of houses and on "patrol" and why FDNY response protocol is as it is, even if it seems an excess of responding units. In a case like this, if one ambulance or fire unit or emergency unit in general is having trouble accessing scene you will more than likely already have several other units responding from different routes. As a civil engineer major redundancy is basically like second nature to me just like all of NYC's emergency responders We don't have all our eggs in one baskets, and thats good because NYC drivers/pedestrians are some of the most oblivious, arrogant idiots in the world.
