Hello Rob. I heard you more than once commenting that the band playing for Oum Kalthoum does not use music sheets in her concerts. I asked myself the same question many years ago and did not have an answer until I saw an interview with her nephew on the Egyptian TV. According to him, Oum Kalthoum demanded that every musician was forced to memorizes the notes and at time they demanded that they go past midnight rehersing until the song is ingraved in their brain. According to her nefew, Oum Kalthoum was known for repeating parts of the song a number of times and at times she will go back to the beginning of the song after a half an hour of singing. If the musicians had their notes, they will have to start flipping pages and pages to find the part she is about to sing. To avoid that and to keep up with her speed, and her improvisations they had to memorize the notes. This made Oum Kalthoum concerts and song more special.

To add to these amazing facts: Her improvisation also involved switching maqamat for the repeated parts, which the musicians had to keep up with. The one that makes me respect her the most is that she would also force the band to tune their instruments to her voice depending on where she felt the strongest for that particular performance.
My experience with her music as a kid in the 70s was similar to the ones in the video - I didn't really appreciate her until I was in my mid-20s, when I also started to appreciate Tarab.

I believe the best thing about Umm Kulthum’s songs is that you can listen to them whether you are sad, happy, feeling love, or loneliness. No matter what your emotions are, you will find something in her voice, the music, or the lyrics that touches your soul. She is a legend, in addition to the composers and writers who worked with her. She is my favorite singer, and thank you for highlighting her to other cultures ♥

I looooooove the way she sings. you're missing out on hearing the emotion in the specific words. sad words she said with an intonation of someone in pain and calling out in an "airy" manner making you feel her pain and passion; but when it's a happy line, she's puts on a giddy tone that puts you in that great mood feeling exactly how someone in that position would feel. it's amazing. we all play her music when cooking, when cleaning, when chillin with tea on the balcony, or just laying in bed with eyes closed.

Um Kalthum reminds me of night roadtrips, we used to take as a family in my childhood, and my father would put Um Khulthum tape and I would fall asleep in the car to her voice.

You will find in Umm Kulthum’s songs any emotional state you are going through. She sang for all the love states that a man or woman might go through in their life: joy, sadness, separation, meeting, quarrel. She sang for all emotional states and states of love.… we badly need another Umm Kulthum now a days

We all used to hate her when we were younger, then the more we grow up the more we love her songs. It's not just songs, it's an experience. Nights with a cup of tee in winter, or when you go to those traditional cafes full of old people. I'm a smoker and every time at night even though I don't want to cross my cigarette limit, I just do it for the experience, for me it's just a part of it

I grew up with Oum Kalthoum's songs at home and my parents' love for her. One of their fondest memories was of attending her recital in Tunis in May 1968, and that was one of the most beautiful concerts, as she seemed really happy to sing for this audience who honoured her by being extremely receptive.
I have carried this love for her and her beautiful songs with me all my life, and I have succeeded in transmitting this love and taste for great and beautiful music to my children, even though they are still very young.

One of the things that was not talked about deeply in this video, perhaps because its a bit away from music, is how she was an integral part of the soft power of Egypt, a cultural power, in that period, and how that affected all arabic speakers to be able to understand Egyptian Arabic. Perhaps a bit of context here, there is one formal arabic, used officially or legally or in speeches, etc and other forms of spoken regional dialects that can vastly vary from one region of the arabic speaking world to another that sometimes even can be difficult to understand. Thanks to her and similar Egyptian entertainers/singers/actors, etc, the Egyptian Arabic is understood among all other arabic native speakers. She created a cultural bridge, singing in both formal Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. She would put an immense amount of emotions and passion in her songs, supported by the best poets, some of which were not Egyptians (creating that universal Arabic belonging) and superb composers of that era made her a timless icon adored by so many people.

Extra note...much of the lyrics was written by Ahmad Rami..He was in love with Um Kulthum but she refused to marry him.. so he was writing all these love songs to her..she knew it and sang lyrics she knew were written for her..knowing that brings more meaning to the whole thing

    Hey man,
I am an Egyptian who accidently came across your channel, and got curious about the reflection of non Egyptians on a perosn that Egyptians in whole admit her powerful impact on their lives. Started by this video then have been dragged by the algorithm watching one after one ended with your first reaction ever on her first video. MAN, your reaction there was purely genuine to the point that made me feel you have connected with her in a-beyond-the - world kinda connection . Which makes me ask you, is she truly your favorite?
Or you just faked it all for the sake of more 👍🏼👀, and 💵?
Hope my cooment didn't lie in any way but positive! ☺️

if im not feeling it in the morning when I do a reaction session I dont do any.
i get 1000s of comments mentioning my genuine chat about the music I listen to from all over the planet
i am lucky to make 100 dollars a month in the channel due to all videos being copy claimed
i do it daily cause it only takes a few hours, i love the new music i hear from people who enjoy my comments on a song they may only like and listened to it many years ago
i am never about the views again cause other people make money off my vids who own the rights and I am fine with that.
if i were about views I would pick every video to react to and not the 100% of the ones I have done that were personally requested. :)

Hi Rob. Just as for you know, you absolutely just heard 0.5% of her vocal abilities. You only heard her in her 70s and with low quality videos in terms of voice quality. Just listen to her voice in her 30s or 40s or 50s you’ll then know how incomparable this woman is vocally

  • @mr.moeetal
    @mr.moeetal 3 місяці тому

and I'll this to all the most certainly obvious great, and correct comments, but going to an Umm Kulthum show meant a couple of things: 1. you're only going to hear 1 or maybe 2 songs since they're super long. 2. you put on your sunday best, and you sat down like it's the Opera not a music concert.
