I’m not sure if this was mentioned in the comments. This song, especially the music, is considered the crown jewel of all Arabic music. To understand the intricacies and the insane amount of work that went into making it, you would need to hear the entire song, which is longer than an hour, with a really high quality headset to understand.
The Arabic music critics concluded that among her songs, the Rubaiyat Khayyam, composed by a Persian mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, and poet, today most famous for his Rubaiyat, a spirited and profoundly humanistic celebration of life, love, and liquor! She sang this song back in the early 1950s or towards the end of 1949s, after her long-time and permanent poet and close friend, Ahmed Rammi, selected and translated some passages from the very long original Persian text.
After the Rubaiyat Khayyam comes this song, Al-Atlal. For both songs, the music director was the great Riad Mohamed El Sunbati, one of the greatest Egyptian music composers of all time, and my favorite!
This masterpiece is surely top of all human made songs. I can't believe it is composed by human. It is almost divine. No doubt there is no match. Even calling this just a "song" is kinda felt insult.
My dad never listens to music except Um Kolthoum especially this song, it’s probably the only sing he would sing with her lol. Now that I’m living abroad sometimes I listen to this song it reminds me of childhood memories when this song was played in my dad’s car. Good old times
So refreshing watching a fellow Canadian enjoying the Queen of Arabic music! the Canadian "eh" took me by surprise :) In Arabic culture you get your nickname based on your eldest son or daughter. So Umm = Mother/Mom, so Umm Kulthum = Kulthum's mother/Mom. I can say without a a doubt, you're not an Arab if you have not listen to Umm Kulthum 😊 I tell you Bud there is nothing like having an extra large double double on a long drive or weekend country trip without listening to Fairuz in morning and Umm Kulthum later n the day. As you have noticed poetry is vital part in Arabic music, it's the foundation; well it used to be sadly. It have to have a meaning, story, journey, lessons ....etc. Fun fact: Songs are usually written by poets exclusively and then sang by singers/artiest. Poets decides who will they allow to sing their written songs. Another fact is from the majority of the artists from this generation such as Umm Kulthum, Fairuz, Abdul Haleem Hafez, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and the rest is that their songs are long, very long for current times because radio was the only means of entertainment literary, as you said some might not be able to listen to it for sometime or only at a coffee shop or such. TV was not a thing yet. They intentionally repeat verses so listeners hear every word and remember it. Let me know if you want need help with Arabic music. Cheers bud!
You are correct about the um/abu name after their eldest kid, however it is not the case here! She just had an epithet or compound name as her actual name, she was not a mother nor did she have kids!
Umm Kultoum is an old Arabic historical Name ,not related to the name of older son or daughter ,she did not had any children..Prophet Mohammed Peace upon him, had a daughter named Umm Kulthoum ,also Imam Ali bin Abi Talib had a daughter named Umm Kulthoum.
So it a Name for female .
This song is very emotional to many middle-easterns. In away it is a metaphor about the defeat of 1967 and the fall of Palestine.
no. the song was released in 1966. a year before the 6 days war. it s just a love song. but what a song! I love it deep in my heart
@@wamaakoula5649 your dates are correct, but keep in mind it was also sung way after that as well. And became a metaphor to that.
tht s not wrong@@markkhalil5215
I mean, wow.. Her voice is enough to that concert hall without microphone👏👏👏
in fact, there is a microphone hanging from the ceiling,
The mic must be in a distance from her because up not front of her, she always destroys the mics
The greatest voice ever. If you understand Arabic, you will cry for sure.
She sings only high quality poetry written by the most famous poetes
The greatest singer to ever bless the world.. her voice comes once in a lifetime! I don't know if anyone mentioned it before but her performances were a full hour only singing one song.. every song begins in around 15 minutes of pure music as the build up for her
UMM KULTHUM IS REALLY A VERY SPECIAL PERSON, AND EGYPTIAN MUSIC IS AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL MUSIC, IT'S LIKE INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL AND ORIGINAL,IT TAKES US TO OTHER REALMS, TO THE REAL REALM, BECAUSE THESE SONGS SOUND LIKE MUSIC CAME FROM THE REAL WORLD.
On the lack of sheet music: Umm Kulthum preferred to work this way. She was incredibly demanding about rehearsals, and demanding in general of everyone she worked with. Being part of her orchestra was a huge privilege, so the commitment expected was also very high.
And as I think others have pointed out, while it's good to acknowledge her specific Egyptian ethnicity, she is loved throughout the Arabic-speaking world, and often by others whose musical cultures are related in some way (with Quranic recitation acclimating Muslim listeners to modal vocal improvisation). There is a Greek singer who covered numerous of her songs.
Umm Kulthum ....... The legend was 70 years at that concert ... thank you Robk... follow you from egypt
She used to sing every Thursday in the evening and many were tuning to the radio to listen to her
My father wrote a letter to my mother in the 80s with these lyrics during their Engagement… i still have it
But your parents finally got married.
The writer of the poem did not marry the girl he wrote the poem for her.
Yes man those songs Arab favorite all times until now our young ladies and men live their love story with umkalthum night songs.. never die those words or that voice.. try to listen for her at night with your glass of drink .. omg it’s crazy out of this world

This is the best song ever at all the history
Music by Riyad El Sonbati, he was know for the talent of making the music sing the meaning of the words. His talent was one of a kind.

You used to perform a party every month on Thursday, and friends gathered at my grandfather's and listened to Umm Kulthum on the radio.
Every part of this song is amazing
Plz do part 2,3,4…
When Umm Kulthum sang this song, she was sixty years old
Umm Kulthum, the most beautiful voice in the Arab world
Most of her songs were written by Egyptians poets like Ahmed Shawki, Ibrahim Nagi, etc. and top composers like Riadh Sumbati, Mohamed El Qasabgi, etc. She was in excellent company! Back in the day radio stations would play her songs late at night before ending their broadcast. Thank you so much for playing her songs. Peace!
You forger bayram ettounsi, hé was tunisian !
@@narjessbenhamouda7071 he was of Tunisian roots but lived most of his life in Egypt (the only time he spent outside of it was in exile due to his Egyptian nationalism)

Her Tuning and Pitch accuracy ...a Legend
Some old musicians here in egypt said that they could fine tune their instruments referred to her voice
Bearing in mind that she is not singing to (Equal tempered) notes
she used around 10 different scales (maqam) in that song
Thanks 4 the video Mr ROBK
you should listen to sherine
some of her master-pieces are "kalam eineh" trendin world wide now
"mathasbneish" it;s so sad and dramatic song
"kolly melkak" a great love song

You need to listen to the musical entrance.
And you need to know the story of the poem.
And I advise you to listen to the song from the composer (Riyad Al-Sunbati)
The song was 1 hour! Anyways Thank you for the nice video and your effort 👍😍💐
This song is one her best one . She really nails it
The. Mic tied on the ceiling, 4 meters from the mouth of umm kulthum, because if she singing as singers, the mic will damage immediately

There were rumors around Emkaltoum when Diva Asmahan was killed at young age ....Em kaltoum was accused of killing Asmahan because rumors said that Asmahan had lot of success for having a better voice and a beatiful look ..she is the only arab singer who could compete with Emkaltoum .. Asmahane was more beautiful .more educated and had a batter voive then Emkalthoum ...her mom was princess graduated from the American University in Beirut Lebanon ..the mother played music and sung well ...she raised her kids Fouad Farid and Asmahan in Catholic school learning french and English plus the family playing music ...Farid and Asmahan had beautiful voives like their mother... they were pretty impressed by their mother ...they learn to sing and play music ..they became famous singers at very young age ...Asmahan was beatiful and had an incredible voice ...as rhey hear of her ..😮all composers run to meet Asmahan and to compose for her the greatest songs ever which effect Em keltoum physically she became less active very upset with the composer she workef with before Asmahsn ... upset and very jealous of Asmahan had problems with the composers who left het behind..So Asmahan became more successful and more glorious then Emkalthoum ....at that time Asmahan succefully stepped ahead as a first class singer untill she was killed almost ruined Emkaltoum reputation until our days tumors still talking about Asmahan's murder mystery.....although Asmahan still remenbered as the best arab woman voice and number one singer and the only Arab Diva ever .Msy her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Infact this is not true, Asmahan wasnt in any ways close to Um Kulthum greatness. The fact, Asmahan was a spy for British, she also used her beauty and involved in many relationships with highly politicians during a very critical period “WW2”
The rumour that claimed that Um Kulthum killed her is just a nonsense story to cover the incident
Oh my God, your comments at 8:18, are exactly the same for the majority of millions of Arabs they do their study examines, they will be studying intensively and preparing for their exams while at the back Umm Kulthum songs were playing in the audio cassettes, at least I can remember of this back in the mid-1970s lol!
you can watch the video of his death. all the egyptian people followed him to the cemetery and all of them mourned his death ...
You will like also reacting on (fayrouz)=
Umm kulthum had 13 steps in her voice a Dr wanted to cut her vocal cords out to examine it after she died and her husband said no Farid El Atrache composed a song for her
🙏🙏🙏
❤❤❤❤❤❤
One more thing you did not notice : where is the microphone??
Yes! she always sang with the mic several feet above, too powerful of a voice! Amazing!

As others mentioned before, this is definitely the absolute masterpiece of Arabic music, composed by the great Riadh Sunbati, every time you hear it in whole, your admiration just gets bigger and bigger. For me this version is the best:

Highly recommend you listen to Al-Layl ya layla الليل يا ليلى by Wadih el Safi. Last i checked its on UA-cam in Mr. El Safi's channel (channel is called "Wadih El-Safi"). Although contemporary Arab singers have performed this song countless times, Wadih El Safi remains simply unsurpassed
added thanks

There were some differences occurred between Umm Kulthum and Al-Sunbati in the mid of 1960s when he was in the hospital because of some health issues, Umm Kulthum surprised him by visiting him in the hospital, and as reconciliation, she gave him the translated lyrics of this song for him to compose music and construct this song.
