A superconductor is a material that can conduct electricity or transport electrons from one atom to another with no resistance. This means no heat, sound or any other form of energy would be released from the material when it has reached "critical temperature" (Tc), or the temperature at which the material becomes superconductive. Unfortunately, most materials must be in an extremely low energy state (very cold) in order to become superconductive. Research is underway to develop compounds that become superconductive at higher temperatures. Currently, an excessive amount of energy must be used in the cooling process making superconductors inefficient and uneconomical.

The main use of super conductive magnets are, used in MRI machine. They create magnetic field around 1 tesla (10,000 gauss) to 2 tesla (20,000 gauss). Same time earth's magnetic field is 0.25 to 0.65 gauss. With these so much magnetic field, we can excite and relaxation of our Hydrogen atom which are abundantly present in our body. By this way, they taken whole body image using Hydrogen atom without any radiation, unlike CT scan uses X-ray so it causes radiation side effect to body. Major disadvantage of MRI is time consuming, they might take around 30 to 40 mins for each patient because the machine have to do excitation and relaxation of hydrogen atom then it detected by censor.

Currently using super conductor device is MRI Machine. ramping the magnet and keep it active till life long with proper cooling system.
For 1.5T MRI around 740 to 750 amps current flows continuously without any resistance in the main coil.
