Seems highly unlikely to happen to a band like Epica, where the lead singer has such an important role in writing all their songs. Something really bad must happen to Simone for her to leave. Don't forget she was sick for quite a few months. They didn't kick her out, they only temporarily let Amanda Somerville fill in the gap during live shows. Plus she and Mark dated during the first and second album. They broke up, but they didn't kick her out. No bad blood there at all. Usually only happens when there's bad blood after break-ups or unanswered love between two members of the band like Nightwish or Trail of Tears. @Joey Congi they really start to get heavy from the album "Design your Universe" on. The first two albums have a slightly more classical music focus. The Divine Conspiracy is a great bridge towards the more heavy Epica. But all their songs are great. I particularly like the 'Requiem for the Indifferent' album and 'The Holographic Principle'. There are some major gems on there!

YYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Best Epica video till date!! I love that it represents the band visually as it does musically, and without any clichés, this is actually very beautiful and very well done!. I would have loved to see more of Coen, Isaac, Ariën and Rob, but I understand there's not enough time to show what the story is about. Also, MAJOR PROPS for choosing a METAL song that is mostly grunts!!! I was so happy with Storm The Sorrow because you didn't cut Mark's part out to make it perhaps "poppier" or "commercial". This shows what Epica really is! So thanks for staying metal! Much love from Colombia ♥
That's so true! I prefer songs where Mark grunts and it's a shame that they cut that part from The Phantom Agony video. I'm so satisfied with this song and video!

Excellent contrast between the two voices.
Epica shows once again how talented they are. Fantastic instrumentals and Simone is great as always, I hope they never change the main vocalist! This is exactly how symphonic metal should be like. Not pop-rock like many other sympho bands have turned into. I hope they keep going in this path. Symphonic, Beautiful yet Brutal.

During Hellfest, Mark Jansen asked the audience how many had actually purchased their latest CD; no more than fifty arms raised. What a shame. Piracy against bubble gum pop, I don't care, but cheating on Epica, come on, guys, a CD is not that expensive. You are forcing the band to tour and tour; the more they tour, the less they can concentrate in doing the superb music they have made. So next time please buy their CD.

Then again, I am not the biggest fan of the earlier albums and my personal favourite, Requiem For The Indifferent wasn't so well recieved. Anyway, I certainly won't buy their next album without listening into it first. If it gets more progressive and complex again or they shift in a direction I like, I will buy it though. I 100% agree that one should support the artists one likes.

I really like to have the physical albums...it's a pleasure, but you know, little profit from the album purchases really goes to the bands now...the record companies!!!!!! And I'm suffering a bit right here with this...I was living in a rented room and my landlord entered it one time and took things indiscriminately.... I even had "The Score" ... I had signed things!!!!! Signed albums even from KORN from when I was really young... Fortunately. Epica are easy going people and easy to be with and an album that he left behind "The Obsessive Devotion" was signed again...I only have three albums from Epica now!
I had countless CDs . . . countless! Books...countless! Vinyl . . . a little tv my grandpa gave me, I don't even watch tv...but it was my grandpa's.... My father's Zippo...All I had from my father!!!!!!!!!!! A lighter...my gosh!!!!!! And fortunately my bass and my bagpipes weren't there nor other percussion instruments from the band, I was out playing and the bass was with a friend!.... but lost other instruments...flutes... No justice was made. Nothing!!!!! I'm lucky I have this pc made of dead pc's!
I will never buy another CD. And maybe...not even a book....
And now I can't play anymore, I have rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia ( a lot of pain...government doesn't care....I'm poor as a poor can be....) I put some money aside for the live concerts and I don't fuckin' care about the pain when I go to the concerts because those are the best fuckin' days of my life!!!!! And I contribute to my beloved bands that way!!!!!

+Ricardo Martinez You're right, but let's be honest, most of us love a lot of rock and metal bands, imagine how expensive it would be to purchase every album they release, it would be a huge amount of money, I personaly only have 17 albums: 7 from Aerosmith, 4 from Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, 2 from Hardcore Superstar, 1 from Helloween, 1 from Damn Yankees, 1 from Deep Purple and 1 from Rammstein. Obviously I wish I had more, but I can't afford to buy every album I want like Consign To Oblivion for instance.

A real fan is someone who loves the creations of the band and still givin support to them, as you´ve said...we are growing with them. A real fan grows with the band, that´s what characterize an EPICAN.... FOREVER AND EVER. :)
Actually they're turning for the worse. A real fan also knows when to let a band go, and I think this is a pretty good time. They haven't delivered a solid album for quite a while. The bond is not unbreakable if the band decides to leave their greatness behind and abandon their loyal listeners by not doing their job. I'll stick to their earlier and actual good work.

Rêve Errance Well, what I was trying to say is that evolution is part of the band and if you want ,you can grow with them, i mean if you want the band to be part of your phylosophy you can do it, i didn´t wanted to everyone understand that if they don´t like new songs they´re no more epica fans, i just was trying to make emphasis about the evolution of the band ;)
And if you think their style of music is the same.. Listen to other music bands. I think They have improved their music rythm. Nowadays, which band has the same melody as the beginning ? I consider that no one. Every year comes something different.. And in my personal point of view it is a good thing. I love Epica till the end no matter what comes.

Ok I normally listen to thrash/black or Opeth (they get their own category 😉), but I actually quite like this!

No they are not Opeth are a progressive metal band. They are a mix of Queensryche, progressive rock bands like Camel, Pink Floyed or yes with Extreme metal elements mixed in. I really don't like death metal but love Opeth. Opeth albums before Still life (my favourite Opeth album) had a black metal influence but everything after Still life does not. When I saw Opth live in 2007 they played one of their songs influenced by black metal and Mikael said the song was stupid and had stupid lyrics and that the crowd to just ignore them which made me laugh.

I am honestly in shock over this song. I have been listening to Epica for longer than I can even remember and they have always seemed very dull to me. The only reason to ever really listen to them was Simone, who I only even liked because of Kamelot. But now they have taken their music to a new level, the whole composition is written in a very progressive sense and instrumentally they are interesting to listen to where as years ago everything was typical and bland. Even better than that is Mark's vocals, where I couldn't even stand to listen to his growls in the past, the overall tone and approach he has taken on this new album is miles above what he used to do. This is fucking awesome.

Yes, now a days most record labels suck, they censor almost everything, Nuclear Blast don't censor nothing, plus many bands now a days are moving to Nuclear makes it an awesome record.

I always thought that they were gonna shoot a new video for Unchain Utopia (they did it once I know) :S But I must say... THIS VIDEO IS ON FIRE! Their best music video so far! Simone is like a goddess and her mimics scares me sometimes but it's about the video concept, so please don't tell me that she is not emotional.

This is absolutely AMAZING!!! I'm so shocked, I wasn't expecting them to use this song for the video at all. I was expecting Omen or Natural Corruption, but no they use the most intense song on the album. Totally blown away, best Epica video to date! What makes it even better is that we get a video that showcases Mark! Yes, just yes. No. Not yes. YAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

My favorite song of the album. That video couldnt be more proper to the song but the problem is that this song is pretty brutal and you know an alive song! But the more song is energetic and Mark is energetic and dynamic, the more Simone is stable and draggy...
Look at all of those: Nightwish, WT, Tarja... and what they have become. Epica is still unbeatable.

I don't understand how someone can stop loving a band because they try new things. I personally can't stand it when I get the same album over and over from an artist. I want them to try new things and grow as musicians, and I feel Epica did an amazing job with this album because it's something new, but at the same time, It's still Epica, and personally I think this album is by far their best. It's just better in every aspect compared to a lot of their old stuff. The only thing I think that has come even close to this is Design Your Universe.
From :"You're the night, so you are the dark side of the day you'll never see" (Mother of Light) To: "If you blame all your failures someone else, without any remorse" It has definitely changed, It is not the topics but the way they are written.

This song feels more like symphonic power metal when compared to the last two albums, which I thought had a slower pace to them. Like always, I love it.
I want to see just one video, one video where simon and Mark aren't all attention in the video. Why always left apart the rest of the band? Why insist on using the physical appearance of Simone? Epica makes good music, many strategic marketing is not necessary. Sick of it!

No me va mucho la voz de mark talvez si hace una banda que cante el solo ya que en mayan tambien esta acompañado de cantantes liricos igual me gusta la banda y Simone es Simone es toda una Diva y Mark creo que siempre fue tratado con dignidad gracias a el se fundo esta banda y el hace los guturales le da la ventaja de no solo captar publico rockero normal o del pop sino para que a epica la escuchen tambien seguidores del black y death metal si la gente conociera mas a esta banda podrian lograr unir gente metalera de los mas clasicos y los mas extremos,del rock y del pop mas light.
Its funny how everyone is complaining about something that is so darn subjective. Everyone has a different taste. And if former Fans do not like their music anymore than its their opinion. Yeah, I also don't get why they are still watching the vids then, but some people need to complain, I think. Let them. Its their right to do so. I myself find Epica not as good as they were on the beginning because I liked it when the symphonic parts were more intens but their change does not made me less a fan. Epica still is my most favorite band after all. In my opinion fans should grow with their Bands and not just trow them away because one is so shallow minded that they simply do not want to listen to something that is not their standard anymore. You yourself are changing too. Why shouldn't that be the same with music then? ;)

Very good video, the only thing I have to say is that Isaac, Arien, Coen and Rob are not shown at all, just a little second at the end. But for the rest of it is really good, most of all for Mark's part at the beginning, it was really epic.
The way this band has evolved is just beyond me! Though, personally, I would have liked the album to show Simone's operatic range differently, I am very happy with it and cannot stop listening to it! Can't wait to hear what comes next--I want more!
This was so good until she started singing. She can't opera and it's just horribly out of place. The chorus lyrics are just so cringey.
