I've severely slowed down my work with artists because most artists no longer understand what it's like to work with actual producers. Some really great info here.
Fantastic info!! I remember handling these budgets to make sure everyone is taken care of!! I still handle it like the old days!! No one leaves the room until we all sign off on splits etc.
The better comparison is professional Producer vs Hobbyists producer, and the difference in perspective between the money made and the success of there work. Building a brand and networking and guiding a project and the artist from start to finish is a different set of skills, that some creative people struggle with for many reasons.
I think it’s more than that, most “artists” dont want to be guided. More than that they dont play any instruments or know any music theory, and many spend more time getting good at TikTok than they have spent learning scales or chords or even rhythm. And unfortunately this applies to most producers as well. There is much wealth to be made even in the middle of all of that. However the relationship between people changes when it’s no longer a relationship, but a transaction. Besides building a brand and networking has always been the primary role of the management of the talent, and most artists that are independent lack that mentorship. Agents keep the talent on the clock and business oriented. Having a “team” used to help the artist learn right from wrong and held them accountable to a bottom line and a steady growth trajectory. Most “Artists” lack those core guidelines now at least in the beginning, and most of them are used to doing everything from their laptops or phones in isolation. So it’s really not the job of the Producers to pick up that slack, although in a perfect world it would benefit both parties. Overall the entire landscape has changed and some of it is for the better and some of it is not.
It's simple, if you're not managing the recording and mixing sessions, directing the artist in the vocal booth, working directly with the label in how the tracks should be marketed, then you are not a producer. Making a beat does not equal producer, and it's dumb for beatmakers to fight for a producer credit when they could create more value and generate more upfront money for themselves by being credited as a composer or beatmaker, but this is what happens when ego gets in the way of business sense...
Artiste's are handing all that stuff bcoz they're on their own, can't go assumeing that every artiste is signed to a major label with budgets & a machine behind them
I have a signed copy of that book. He signed it for my cousin who lent it to me and told me I could keep it when I offered it back. We both met Kashif at Manny’s Music in 1996 when he was pushing the book.
Wow! Powerful, Educating. An excellent video for those who are working in the new music business. It makes the point that along with the glory and dollar bills there comes huge responsibilities and a need to keep high ethical standards..
While you are right about alot of this, it’s not all the producers fault. Many times it is because of artists who don’t understand what a producer actually does and/or also don’t want to be produced or bothered period. And I know you mentioned it, but indie or major you can also blame this on the lack of A&R’s that actually exist. And as someone who ran around LA navigating, networking getting in sessions and other spots, when it comes to dealing with many artists, so called a&r’s labels etc etc the fact is they helped in creating this problem. And let’s be honest, the so called producer or beatmaker of today are really just session musicians at this point. And then you also got so called producers sending a beat to another so called producer and this may happen 4 or 5 times before it lands in an artists hand.. which is honestly wack af!!! And the current splits are bullshit. And you are right the money is way too low. They actually convinced us it’s okay to give every aspect of music away for free. And that has to end. The game needs a complete makeover. Thankfully I left LA and that nonsense behind cause playing by industry rules aint it. I also got that book and need to reread it. Hope I can find it on my garage. But you are tight about much. Thanks for another great video as always. peace & blessings 🫡
Dont forget that producers are expected to do many more things then then just the thing that is actually production. Production is simply laying midi and audio into a sequence for a end product. Here are all the things that are not production but are additional skills and or tasks a producer often does, Singing, songwriting, Engineering, sound design, play a instrument, marketing, management. This gentleman says its your responsibility to get musicians to record and thats real producing however I disagree if someone just used a sound library or Fiver or splice and that audio was used and adequate then that is still real producing. Where the audio source comes from, all that matters is the end production.
Commercial aspects of business involved for producers need a clarify their own agreements. The producer can start by itemizing their requirements for the production. Deal with this by the artist first before committing to a project.
Yep. Or, this can be done by the producer being responsible and keeping a tally of what the budget shouldn’t go over on their end and submit the invoice with he producer agreement at the end of the process.
Hi Casey. BMI has a new Home page. Very difficult to decipher. Can you make a tutorial (or a New Course to purchase) step by step how to secure Song Composer 100% Royalties, and Publisher LLC Registration and 100% Royalties on BMI and ASACP?. There is the Direct Deposit on their site, but no disclosure of guarantee on Royalties, or is this Assumed to be the case. Appears like the Industry is not transparent anymore. Thanks Your 60 Day Course is Excellent. Any Up-Dates forth coming in your Course?
This is because ppl starting using the terms interchangeably….. a writer of a tv show is not the producer. It’s really simple lol. A producer produces… with the elements of the production
He's talking about BMI's 200% scale. I don't listen to him on everything cause most people in management or promotions don't operate on the inner workings of the business.
You mean a producer who finds a beat because he has found a singer he wants to market, vs a beat maker with a finished product, since a person can just put there music on youtube,, if you do it that way a record company will ask you to take it down if they like it, , I dont know ,

hiphop is like that! they are the only ones!
@@larrytan73 Nah bro. I do mainly R&B and I can tell you - There's been a huge change in artists' mindsets lol.
Fantastic info!! I remember handling these budgets to make sure everyone is taken care of!! I still handle it like the old days!! No one leaves the room until we all sign off on splits etc.
Yeah man!

this is good to know because my artist is his own producer and we are all about doing things right way
Yep you’ve got to if you want to grow.

Yes I can do this and yes there will be updates.
Truth😢
Trickle Down. 😂
Unfortunately some folks are just too stubborn... At the end of the day Its Called Music Business but some remain so ignorant.
This I great information, and the book by KASHIF is a real Gold mine ❤. Thank you Young Lion 🦁 💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥
I keep trying to tell people about that book!
Preach
Most of them don’t care about none of this. They just want to rent out beats with horrible contracts on beat stars to as many artist as they can lol
You’re right but I gotta still put this out for those that want to go past that stage.
This is because ppl starting using the terms interchangeably….. a writer of a tv show is not the producer. It’s really simple lol. A producer produces… with the elements of the production
Most artists didn’t graduate high school. How they know more than producers? 😮
The argument for the last 20 years lol.
It's not really something to argue about. There are actual rules, roles, definitions. People have just abandoned them (rules, roles, definitions).
You're absolutely right.
Are you from RVA?
It’s great Tok mow alt his info as an aspiring music producer but how do I get hired ?
What bout this 200 percent of each song Esso from Bag Fuel podcast talking about?🤷🏾♂️
