      @@natureaquariumsusa This looks awesome. How well do the house plants uptake ammonia/nitrite/nitrate from the water column?

      @natureaquariumsusa  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi great question. So it’s taken me about two months of figuring out the dosing of fertz because of the terrestrial plants strong nutrient uptake. I would say if you have submerged aquatic plants keep up with the fertilizer. If you have no aquatic c plants continue dosing but at a much lower level to compliment the nitrate/phosphate in the tank from waste and feeding. Remember the terrestrial plants still need potassium and other elements

      Yes. I will. This big tank will get frequent updates on the many systems and items on it. Just filmed an update on it. Will be out in a couple of weeks. Thank you for watching

    Nice. I have one on my tank, it works well. I went up quite high and had to get a stronger pump.

      That’s awesome. Yeah it all depends on what plants you put in. Some plants all they want is a trickle while others want to be submerged

    How effective have the plants been with ammonia/nutient uptake and would it allow you to have smaller water changes or more fish to the aquarium?

    • @natureaquariumsusa
      @natureaquariumsusa  5 місяців тому

      Hi. So the ammonia should always be handled by properly size filtration so you should be running at 0 NH3. All of that should be converted to NO3 for plants uptake. This system did have an impact on my fertilization in which I had to adjust my fertilizing to compensate for the terrestrial plants. In other words they were stripping out some of the fertz from the display and caused algae. Now that I have it dialed in both plants are doing well. In a fish only tank (no plants in display tank) I would watch the ammonia and phosphate levels and dose a complimentary fertilizer to supplement the plants on the system above. They should be able to help keep your tank cleaner and handle a descent bio load only if you have the proper sized filter.

      Thank you! Let’s say you have the plants dialed in, can you only do water changes if nitrates are some number, say 70ppm? Or better off on a weekly cadence anyway? Looking to set up a discus tank and have some decent reef keeping chops. First foray into fresh.

      Ahh ok. Been doing discus for a long time. So weekly water changes are super important in the first 2 years. For several reasons:
      One you need to feed them several times a day for proper growth
      Two the alphas release hormones to stunt the other ones. Water changes flush that.
      Discus need to be over crowded in a large tank. They have have a strong social structure so about 9 in a 90 gal tank is a good start. 85f should be the minimum temperature for them. Their immune systems are exothermic and need that high temp. Hybrid discus don’t care about acidic water like wild ones so tap water is fine.
