    Loved this! I've only started cooking split peas since when I'm here in Mauritius, but my interpretations of the Mauritian cuisine have not been very faithful until now... I'm always missing a spice or going my own route - but tonight I'm going grocery shopping and I'll make sure to have every ingredient for this recipe as I want to replicate it exactly. Thank you! XOXO

      francesca Ⓥ di leandro hey Francesca, hope you are doing well. If you stock up on the basics, you should be good to go. I think I might have to do a video on the basic Mauritian spices. In my cupboard, I pretty much have garam masala, curry powder (a few different types), cumin, turmeric, paprika, cinnamon, fennel seeds, chili flakes and powder, bay leaves, dried curry leaves, coriander seeds and a couple more that are not specifically Mauritian but that I like to use.

    Adding brinjal (eggplant) is a great idea to our traditional dal! Sometimes I add spinach, but adding fried brinjal sounds lovely. Now I know what to do the next time I make dal :D

    Do you not do the last part of the recipe in your country ? We in Trinidad and Tobago call it chawk . We sautee cumin seeds and cut up garlic pieces and put that in the finished pot of dhall .

    I love this soup but I altered the recipe. I have made it a few times and I find that adding 3/4 tsp of Amchor ( dried mango) gives it an even better layer of flavor to the pallet .

    +Ana Moldavan I cannot seem to be able to reply to you directly because of your google settings so I hope the tagging works.
    Neither my boyfriend nor I like the taste of onions and garlic and anything in the onion-garlic family (spring onions, garlic greens, chives). We find them far too pungent. And also we are quite sensitive to them. They give us headaches, restlessness and we have difficulty finding sleep every time we eat onion or garlic. So, we just avoid them. If we are eating out, we sometimes have a little if they are in the meals but I do not cook with them. The only time I do eat a little garlic is when I am sick or I feel a little cold coming. It is quite effective then.

    Another delicious looking recipe!!! But I plan on tasting it~ XD might try this next week :D but without the oil when "frying" the eggplant :3

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  9 років тому

      Ran Dom You can totally adjust it to your liking. I sometimes cook with a little oil just for the taste. And for eggplants I find the texture is better when cooked in this way. But feel free to adapt to suit your needs. :)

    Love your channel! May i ask why don’t you like to use garlic and onion? Curious because i hear that’s it’s not good for us, so i was wondering if that was your same reasoning

      Nick T Yes it will work with green split peas. You will get a slightly different texture and the taste will be different too but still nice.

    r u teaching us how to cut ginger ? so much time ....

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  8 років тому +9

      Something that may be obvious to some people does not necessarily come easy for somebody else. If you've grown up watching your mum cook, then many things may seem natural to you. But some people are complete beginners. I've had people asking me questions about how to do basic things like peeling a mango. So, there is a first time for everything (whether that first time may be at a very young age or later). That is why we take the time to do videos (free for anyone to access) that teach the basic things for beginners as well. Some encouragement would be nice. This is one of the many things that this channel aims for. At least we have done something and put it out there. Have a nice day!

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie  8 років тому +2

      Also, I have showed how to cut the ginger here because it needs to be finely cut or minced for this recipe. Other recipes may call for larger pieces of ginger.
