Do you have any videos talking about "energy transfer from the legs"? The way I see a lot of people talk about 'powering the shot from the legs' is just nonsense from a physics perspective. Your body needs to propel the ball towards the rim at somewhere around 6m/s (depending on release angle). In order to do that, the contact point (your hand) needs to be moving faster than that relative to the ground. The only way for your legs to contribute is by accelerating your whole body upwards. That's the only 'energy' they can transfer. The muscles in your legs push against the ground and move your hips in the opposite direction. If your legs move your body quickly enough you'll leave the ground, and the faster they move you the higher you'll jump. If your body isn't moving your legs didn't do anything, and if your body isn't moving quickly your legs didn't do much. If you have a 'hitch' in your shot you lose the upwards momentum that your legs are adding to your body, and you have to make up for that by accelerating the ball faster relative to your body with your arms. In order to shoot accurately from distance the tolerances are very low, so if you sometimes use that momentum but not always you won't be accurate. But a lot of people are saying "shoot from your legs", or "the power should come from your legs". This is obviously untrue. If you could entirely 'shoot from your legs' you would be able to jump into the net. Your legs can't propel the ball faster than they propel your whole body, because all your legs can do is move your body.
This is spot on. Power comes from the dip. It needs to be synced properly and when I use my methods to help shooters, the shot becomes effortless and they can shoot from farther back
Just get the ball to the same spot head in a relatively straight up and down motion. A lot do these players are just plain inflexible and long. The generally lack of coordination longer people have, in addition to being extremely immobile from now stretching deeply and maintaining muscle strength in plyometric positions. After loosened up from stretching at prior times to said movements (at least wait some hours), now trying to build strength in those improperly moving muscles with weighted exercises that practice proper timing of him hinges, wrist flexes, shoulder movements, etc. is important. Check out the work at squat university and by legal shooter. It’s important that your body is actually healthy, strong in flexing movements, and ready to go.
the thing that makes kd so succesful bringing the ball up from the left half of his body, one thing, he is left eye dominant. its really only advantagous for right domanant eye players to bring the ball up from the going to there left so they can protect the ball a bit. but mikal never needed to add that to his game
I also have longer arms so I at least understand the struggle of these players. The energy transfer just never feels natural enough. I remember back when I was young I could shoot a step back 3 but would air ball a normal 3 because stepping back helps put my body in better rhythm
Looking back at this video now is funny 😂 may have been a little to early for this. Bridges has looked really really good the second half of the Boston game and through the entire pacers game. Y’all looked at him through the first half of the FIRST game of the season. That’s crazy.
Coach, ever since you said in a video, "keeping the ball in line with the rim," my makes have noticeably gone up. How does Mikal even know the ball is in line with the rim, from way up there? 🤔 Lol
Tatum also lands closer to his starting point rather than flinging his legs forward like he does so often in his shots. It's like he got a 4 point play once and decided to just always fling his legs out.
Should do a breakdown on long armed, rangy players who improved their jump shots and shooting significantly. Tatum just needed some tweaks to help his shot, bridges somehow destroyed his.
Pretty obvious that the trend in recent years is to get the ball off quicker, with a higher release point, and from behind the head. To make it less easy to block. Makes perfect sense fora player who can pull it off. Not so much for those who can't.
Well, luckily that is not the trend. Shooting from behind the head is completely suboptimal. Keeping the ball in front of the face the whole time is the way to be way more accurate. You almost never see a 3pt shot blocked for a reason
If you put 10,000 hours into a shot, it should become just muscle memory. I'd still advise not shooting a very awkward off-balance slingshot motion jumper, just try to emulate an actual good shooter and stick with that for your 10k hours of practice. (for reference, 10k hours is about 5 years of practice, considering you have some time off and have sessions of 8 hours a day, which is a realistic thing for NBA players to achieve)
Great question. I'd say the set point has to be at least chin height, but in a 1 motion shot, the ball doesn't ever pause there anyway so it almost doesn't matter
The big difference is, Kyle Anderson is an extremely effective player in every way. He is a slow shooter, his motions can be delayed, which throws people off, but a good all round player that can do a little bit of everything with a very strong sizable body.
It doesnt matter anything with enough repititon will become natural most people don't even think about half of the shi it takes to have a " fundamental" jumpshot in the seconds it takes to shoot a ball over a defender.
Curious how [specifically] in Kyle Andersons case, how does such a hitch like that wind up even happening?? Like is it a purposeful incorporation of some sort? Is it just an inherent uncomfortability that occurs while in the process of integrating a new shot form, almost like getting a case of "the yips" ?? It just seems odd to me being that high up in the pro level, shooting thousands(+) of shots in his life, and being trained by the highest echelon of professionals how to that could happen...
Thoughts on college/pro players changing their shot ?? I think once you get to a certain age your jumper shouldn’t be touched. Shooting is muscle memory and rhythm. Over analyzing technique ends up hurting players confidence.
Honestly, you saying there's not a change in Chet's jumper surprised me. To me it looked like he was more pushing the ball out in the 2024-25 in-game clip vs casting it in the clip from last year. It just looked more jarring and like.. forced to me? I'm unsure how to describe it. It's extremely similar looking still, don't get me wrong, but it just looks.. a small bit off to me.
@@carlod5818 That's not what I said. Reread my comment. I said in the IN-GAME clip, it still looks slightly different, as if he IS actually just pushing the ball out as compared to his last year shot.

I have no idea why he changed it
Coach, ever since you said in a video, "keeping the ball in line with the rim," my makes have noticeably gone up. How does Mikal even know the ball is in line with the rim, from way up there? 🤔 Lol
With Mika I think it’s probably a comfortability thing more than anything otherwise it doesn’t really make sense for him to have made any adjustments.
Tatum also lands closer to his starting point rather than flinging his legs forward like he does so often in his shots. It's like he got a 4 point play once and decided to just always fling his legs out.
Dont a lot of people in this video use the same shooting coach? The same guy who tried fixing fulz's jumper?
Should do a breakdown on long armed, rangy players who improved their jump shots and shooting significantly. Tatum just needed some tweaks to help his shot, bridges somehow destroyed his.
Tatums shot worked pretty well today
Why aren't we slandering Cam Payne's shot 🤣
Pretty obvious that the trend in recent years is to get the ball off quicker, with a higher release point, and from behind the head. To make it less easy to block. Makes perfect sense fora player who can pull it off. Not so much for those who can't.
Well, luckily that is not the trend. Shooting from behind the head is completely suboptimal. Keeping the ball in front of the face the whole time is the way to be way more accurate. You almost never see a 3pt shot blocked for a reason
I think all of these jumpers worked really well in practice, but they require you to focus 100% which isnt possible in game.
That's why shooting at an elite level is 70% mental.
0:52 such a beautiful shot! What happened?
So the formula is… to get traded to the Golden state and learn the art of shooting from the best trainers and the best shooter ever
Yup
My question is if you shot at your chest should you raise your set point. At what high should you raise your set point.
Do you do shot break downs for subscribers?
Great question. I'd say the set point has to be at least chin height, but in a 1 motion shot, the ball doesn't ever pause there anyway so it almost doesn't matter
Shot base: Robert Parish
Release 1: Rashard Lewis
Release 2: Manute Bol
15/85
Release speed: very fast
Visual cue: jump
For my 2k people
💀
showing clips of janky shooting motions in the background is a genius way to run ads
tatum changes his perfectly. its gorgeous. same lower body stuff but the release and arc is stunning now.
It looks like they're trying to mimic Batum's quick and high shot release
Zero elbow angle for Bridges is also changing his percentage.
Kyle Anderson has the same thing the Markelle Fultz had his rookie season which is why his jumper changed so much
The big difference is, Kyle Anderson is an extremely effective player in every way. He is a slow shooter, his motions can be delayed, which throws people off, but a good all round player that can do a little bit of everything with a very strong sizable body.
@@pinobluevogel6458 I meant thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), but your right about the all around game
Also for Fultz, his shot in college was much better then in NBA
You're going to argue with Tim L about shooting I agree with you on Bridges
Tatum's jumper looked pretty good tonight to me.
Its insane to me that someone with Kyle Andersons jumpshot can 1 make it to the NBA without and 2 not have had a coach step in and completely fix it.
I've seen a few good, professional level golfers remodel their golf swing and I have to ask myself - why?
It doesnt matter anything with enough repititon will become natural most people don't even think about half of the shi it takes to have a " fundamental" jumpshot in the seconds it takes to shoot a ball over a defender.
The biggest sin about shooting is if the arms are faster than the under body, it's hard to shoot with your under body but that's the way to go.
calling out Legler "not quite understanding it" is brave lol. He's not exactly a commentator talking out of his behind.
Oh, I think Tiger Woods showed us it's perfectly fine to alter mechanics throughout your career. Bridges just needs someone else 👋 to help him
Damn good video!
Honestly, you saying there's not a change in Chet's jumper surprised me. To me it looked like he was more pushing the ball out in the 2024-25 in-game clip vs casting it in the clip from last year. It just looked more jarring and like.. forced to me? I'm unsure how to describe it. It's extremely similar looking still, don't get me wrong, but it just looks.. a small bit off to me.
he said chet didnt change his shot, just the video of him doing drills is a different form
@@carlod5818 That's not what I said. Reread my comment. I said in the IN-GAME clip, it still looks slightly different, as if he IS actually just pushing the ball out as compared to his last year shot.
NBA shooting coaches seem like they have a losing record. There’s some good cases like Lonzo Ball & Deandre Jordan’s free throws, but so many mess up a good thing
I’m just pissed he decided to change it when he gets to the Knicks. Like dude if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. He’s trying to “fix” something and now his jump shot is broke
I cringe seeing these awful forms slowly coming out over the past few years and these "fixes" haven't really helped lately. These unorthodox shooting forms are hurting the player's consistency.
Crazy thing is cam Payne jumpshot looking worse then mines
Only 3 games but so far Tatum has been filthy from deep on high volume. 17/35 to start
Yikes I am so glad Houston didn't trade for Mikal.
What's a good video to learn good modern shot form?
Check my video on secrets to Steph curry shot and I have another secrets to NBA jump shot that has 5 million views. It's a little old but there is some good stuff in it. And u can also go on ExpertX, find my account at Coach Nick, and send in video of your shot and I'll analyze it for you...
The only reason to change a shot is to better the flow of motion and or speed it up. This did neither idk wtf the shooting coach is doing
i also noticed that kyle anderson shot become more smooth. bridges shooting form is cooked 💀
Bridges messing around with the Jokic jumper
Glad to see I’m not just imagining things when I see Tatums shot. Looked good tonight against the Knicks. Not much changed. They all need to work on starting the arm swing from the belly button
Bingo
a good shooter like Larry Bird didnt need a shooting form
Welp. Tatum seems fine LOL. 8-11 from three.
Bridges did ok too
Comparing anyone to KD is crazy lol
Is Bill Cartright Mikal Bridges' shooting coach???
Why is he in the Three point contest shooting 35.7%3PT for that Season 3:41
Currently watching the Celtics vs the Knicks, so far Bridges has shot all bricks and Tatum is raining down threes as a sniper. The Knicks are messing up their defensive coverages though, all of Tatums shots are lightly or not at all contested.
Knicks defense was atrocious. But I also think the Celtics are impossible to guard. And they didn't even have KP out there
@@bballbreakdown Agreed on the first part, not completely convinced on the second one. Mikal was trying to guard Tatum through screens, but they should have just switched it, kept maybe himself and OG on Tatum at all times since he was so hot.
Clearly the lineup wasn't ready at all to handle the most spaced out offense in the league. Normally a team doesn't shoot this well though, this was pretty far outside of the norm, even for the Celtics.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, always love your videos, coach Nick!
Fire the coach who talked him into changing his shot
How come so many bad shooting coaches are still in the league in 2024?
I feel like He learned that form form someone with short arms.
Wow wtfff happened to Kyle Andersons shot???
Tatums shot has always been funky.
Bridges shot looks a bit strange due to having long arms, if he was to wait a split second longer and let the ball come to him, his arms wouldn’t be out so far in front of him and would help remove the 2 motion horrid looking form he’s got now.
It was better his rookie season
Saying Timmy Legs doesn't know what he is talking about when discussing jumpshots is insane.
Mikal bridges jumper look like KD's own with some Tatum😂😂
If Bridges gets tired and ends up jumping two inches less late in the game all of his shots are going to front rim in the fourth quarter!!!!!!
kyle anderson having 2 setshots is actually insane
A dip, a hitch, and two motion? It's giving Markelle Fultz 2.0
It pisses me off that these NBA Trainers and NBA skill guys do this to these players. Add Johnny Davis, and Kyle Anderson to this list too. But Im also putting a little blame on the players too cause if I got thus far with the Jumper I have now what am I changing about my jumper? mikal Bridges is a 38% 3pt shooter so tell me what he needs to change about his jumpshot?
Bro looked at bill cartwright and said to himself: mmm i wanna be like him. 😂😂😂
Man got the jokic jumper
