Thank you so much for an absolutely fabulous mini-series! I have used ON1 for about a year (processing probably 200,000 images or so) and I learned so much from this and your blending mini-series that I just went back and re-processed about 250 5-star images and they all improved tremendously because of what I learned here. I love the way you explain things and that you walk through the controls and then give examples of real life uses for the tools. I can't count the number of "AHA" moments I had while watching your videos. If I had only worked through your mini-series when I first got ON1 :). I think that your mini-series should be included with ON1, they are that helpful. So, thank you again for all the help. Now, off to scour UA-cam for other ON1 videos by you :)
Cool, Charles. I have an ongoing playlist as well. As new videos are added to the series, you'll see them collected here: ua-cam.com/play/PLTShOn29ZxjOnsCmAkYkq1CBX_qwyto8a.html
This is a really useful series (writing this in retrospect). I am learning so much more about masking, never did know about the depths and intricasies of masking. Thanks very much, Scott.
Thank you Scott been on a long Road Trip Out West and out of pocket. How great to return to this series. Looking forward also to yr. comments on upcoming version of ON 1 to be purchased via your connection. TKS
Good humor on the black mask conceals and the cut out (white revels). Gets the point across well. Hope the picture does not come to mind every time I use "masks". Will watch all of the series so will be on the lookout for the next one.
Really enjoying this mini series on masking Scott - you do a great job of presenting what at times is quite complex material. I'm gradually getting into 2023 but am finding some of the AI masks to be not that precise so this series is a must see for me. Best wishes from the UK.
Thanks Simon. And yes, the "classic" masking tools continue to play a role in 2023. AI masks are cool, can jump start things and sometimes be all you need. Other times, we need to go 'old school'
I will finally be able to master the masks... ;-) Thanks. I really appreciate your videos which teach me a lot. As a French speaker, I must tell you that I manage to follow your explanations well. it's always a pleasure and a real opportunity to follow your videos. Thank you for your work and your explanations. especially for on1 photoraw. I will follow the series of videos ;-) Big thanks
Awesome series, thanks! BTW This August makes seven years I've been a sub to your channel (ie, I think it was August 2015 when I started following your efforts, and we even did a 1/1 remotely). Anyway, keep up the great work!
Hi Marty ... wow ... that probably makes you subscriber #4 or something like that! And I remember our remote session ... years before the "Zoom revolution" too. :)
Thanks for watching, Luigi. ON1 or Neo ... it depends on what you need and your editing style. In my opinion, ON1 is a richer editor with more control, Neo leaves more to the AI. Masking tools are stronger in ON1. If you need asset management, choose ON1 over Neo.
Thank you Scott, I’m really looking forward to the masking series. When you ultimately get to luminosity masks, one area I’m particularly interested in is how ON1 masking compares, or can emulate, the TK8 masking plugin for camera raw etc. it seems that TK8 gives very fine control v ON1 which is a little “blunt” perhaps.
Thanks for the video :) not a masking question, but how do you reset just 1 photo to the beginning (without messing with any other photos) in on1? Is it the x icon or the circle with arrow icon? Thanks in advance!
Thank you Scott, I am a long time user of ON1 and I have to admit that with out your guidance and training the software will be good but not as useful as you make it.
Remains very relevant. The masking tools have been consolidated in 2024 (so no more faces vs. locals vs. mask) and the options are in a floating masking window in 2024. The functions and how each tool works is consistent.
nice basic view on masking in on1. I am wondering if I can do something similar to what I see in Lightroom where I set up a sky mask, and an inverted duplicate then save them as a preset so that I can run them against any landscape type of image. With on1 I can create a sky mask then copy it, and create another adjustment with the inverted copy but I don’t know if I can create a preset that will run both on an image?
Hi Ed ... as you saw in the video, you can save masks with presets in ON1. However, Sky masks are not conducive to presets. A Sky mask saved in a preset is not 'recomputed' when applied to a different image. The mask shape will be whatever shape the sky was in the image used to create the preset. Luminosity and Color Range masks saved in presets *are* 'recomputed' based on the target image. Those mask types lend themselves well to presets.
Problem with this video - once it hits the 4:45 spot in the video you can't rewind or fast forward. No matter where you click the timeline in the video it snaps back to the 4:45 spot.🙁
Hi Chuck ... that's certainly an odd one ... I just tried scrubbing on the timeline after crossing the 4:45 spot and things seem to be working. Maybe a temporary glitch?
I've been using ON1 as my primary photo software for about five years and I'm fairly comfortable with masks. But already in 'Masking 101', I've learned several new things, not the least being that one can make custom keyboard shortcuts in ON1! Very much looking forward to more revelations in this series. BTW, do you have a formal teaching qualification? Your 'lessons' have the structure, logic and pace that I used to strive for in my technical college teaching days. Thank you Scott and Cheers from DownUnder 🦘

Thanks very much, Jim. I'm happy the series helped you make even better images. Have fun!
Came back and rewatched this - created a seperate playlist for this series.

Hope your trip was great, Merle. Enjoy!
Thank you, Mask Man. I'm a very seasoned On1 user but I always learn something from your videos. Count me among your fans. Best regards. Tonto.
I appreciate that!

If you prefer, you can think of Batman instead of Zorro :)
That's wonderful news. As an On1 user I look forward to watch your next videos. Thank you Scott for your initiative.
Thanks, Shlomo. I hope you enjoy the series.
I just switched from Luminar Neo to ON1 and am enjoying your videos. Thanks!
Cool, thanks!

As usual well thought out and presented- looking for ward to the series
Thanks, Steven. I hope you enjoy them.
Your best video yet, thank you.
Wow, thanks!
Good overview. Looking forward to the series.
Thanks, Harry. More to come.
Excellent introduction into masks Scott. Looking forward to the coming tutorials.
Regards Daniel
Thanks, Daniel. More to come!
Import to know how to apply different masks and what affects the whole stack. Good job as usual!
Thanks as always for watching Jim!
I consider myself at the intermediate level on masks. So I'm looking forward to you pushing me beyond that. Always enjoy your videos.
Awesome! And thank you, Danny.
Great, Scott! Thanks.
No worries!
I will finally be able to master the masks... ;-)
Thanks.

Thank you, Jean-Benoit. And I guarantee your English is *far* superior to my French. :)
Cool! Looking forward! Thanks Scott.
You bet!

Wow amazing video, i got one quick question what would you recommend on1 or luminar neo.

Hi Edward ... I've never used TK8 so I won't do a direct comparison. I will show what you can do in ON1.

You can use Settings > Reset All Settings to clear all Develop, Effects, etc. settings.
Thank you Scott, I am a long time user of ON1 and I have to admit that with out your guidance and training the software will be good but not as useful as you make it.
Great to hear, Henry! I hope you enjoy the series.
Does the newer 2024 version significantly change anything within this course, or is it still mostly relevant?
Remains very relevant. The masking tools have been consolidated in 2024 (so no more faces vs. locals vs. mask) and the options are in a floating masking window in 2024. The functions and how each tool works is consistent.
Should be an easy background remover.

Hi Rob, thanks for watching. No, I'm not accredited or have any formal training as a teacher ... although thank you for the lovely complement.
