Production Rotary Motorcycles - Suzuki RE5 and the Nortons
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 січ 2019
- Let's talk about rotary or wankel engine powered bikes, as rare as they are. I single out the Suzuki RE5 because it's easily the most produced rotary bike having come from one of the big 4 Japanese firms. I also touch on the Norton family of rotary bikes because they were the last run of wankel powered bikes ever.

Always the moral huh
@@Theillestrator1050 I'll be that guy just for you 😂
no one wants to see you on your Grom! hahaha =P
@@JustMusicAndStuff Lol, The Grom Army
First video of yours that I've watched. Good job, love the commentary.
Great video as always Illest, love seeing these limited-run niche machines get the recognition they deserve. Well researched and well presented, love your work.
Thanks for sticking around and commenting, its motivation
See, this is the kind of content I'm (and i speak for most) digging for. Keep it coming! thanks!!
Nicely done!👏 I can totally watch your vids like this all day man...
Your essays are really something special. Thank you
guy,ur in a class all ur own.thanx for all ur hard work man.
Thank god another video. Love these types from you!
Fascinating information, footage and images! Thanks so much!
Thank you for THE VERY BEST explanation of rotary engines and how they work. I finally get it now. Great, great video. Fascinating stuff. I had no idea anyone tried rotary bikes.
DUDE!!!!! You produce great content. KEEP IT COMING!!!! Thank you!
Gosh man, I love your videos. Such a great balance between informative and entertaining
I love your video's, thanks.......always informative, always humerus.
Thank you, glad you enjoy the content
Your talented bro. You always hit the perfect balance between being funny and informative.
Such great research! I had a fdrx7 I could never get to run so I went mad researching that engine.
That was 20 years ago, but on craigslist recently there was a rotary Suzuki bike found at an estate sale, I was blown away.
You are easily one of the best motovloggers to watch and enjoy. Thank you.
How much did they want for it?
Another great episode. Happy new year!
I know all about these bikes and rotary engines but still watched the video. Keep it up!
Yes. Again You nailed another topic. Your History Videos are just Always extremely. Entertaining
I love these videos. Wonderful production
I'm giving this video a preemptive 👍 before I even finish the video because I KNOW this will be another great video. Keep up the amazing content!
Much appreciated man lol
Excellent review!! 💪
Well done and informative. Thank you
Just about the best explanation of rotaries I've ever seen and funny with in. Excellent job.
The racing Norton rotary had real one moment of glory, when Steve Hislop's 'White Charger' Norton beat Carl Fogarty, on a Yamaha OWO1, by seven seconds in the 37 mile long Isle of Man 1992 Senior TT race, despite Forgarty setting a lap record that went unbeaten for seven years. If ever there was a bike race that should be a movie..
Shame the videos like this one don’t get tons of views. In my opinion they are your best ones. Your storytelling is above and beyond. Keep em coming our way.
Finally, another super informative video! 😍
Thanks for watching
Awesome video man, enjoyed it.
Very nice video 👌. Very well done. Thank you.
Very cool vid bro I really enjoyed it
So happy I found your channel
I'm happy you're here!
What a superb video. Loved it
Of all the videos on youtube. Your history videos are my favorite. I dont understand how you don't have more subs.
Thank you, perhaps in due time lol
Good Job all around! I remember the Suzuki's back in the day but this video filled in a lot of blanks. I had no idea of the Norton. Thanks! Never too old to learn new things!
I guess that was the crux of the Norton, They didn't build enough for people to know about them! lol
@@Theillestrator1050 I enjoy all your videos. You are a very gifted young man. You are way beyond your years. Stay on track. Life will be good to you.
Another great video!!!....Keep up the good work!!
Many thanks - a fascinating video to watch.
Good job.Great vid!
dude, you are very good. keep it up like this, wish you to get big.
Great presentation!
I've never had things explained to me in such as simple way by such a funny dude, been following you since "the problem with japanese bikes" vid, love your stuff man, keep it up!
LOVE FROM THE UK
Another great Illestrator vid!
Felix was a genius love seeing v8 guys jaws drop when a little 13bpp smokes them on the strip.
That was a lot of fun. Educationally enough to keep my attention and turned out so arbitrary (I know now I'll never own a Mazda) that I can laugh and forget it all. What a ride! Thank you very much, sir!
enjoyed the video keep em coming
Flaming hot dorito lmao
Had to make a dorito joke at some point lol
I've been threw 2 rx-7, first and second gen. I'm glad you grazed threw this cuz it's a rarity that the bikes get mentioned. Your presentations are always enjoyed by me!
You had two RX-7s? Wow can i be like you when I grow up? XD
This was great. I learned something new.
Thanks :D
Thank YOU for watching ☺
love the explanation of everything.
Rotary is actually a great choice for a motorcycle. They already get such good mpg that the inefficiency isn't such a big deal, but the light weight, high power and simplicity are nice.
History was always my favorite , bravo sir ty for this lesson 👏👏👏
I got to ride an RE-5; it was very very heavy. It was still cool because it was what it was. Thanks for the video!
Great Video.
Great vid man!
What would I give for that Norton F1! Always been in my top three favourite bikes.
Great video. Keep up the good work
Great Video. Well done in every respect. New Sub. Keep up the great work.
Good job guys.
This channel is highly underrated man. You should have a million subs like some of the other bike channels do. In due time.
Here's hoping...
before we go full electric, i would love to see an era of supercharged motorcycles.
The H2 enters the room: ....from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸
Great science and history lesson
Great stuff Ti - the Wankel always sounded like a good idea IMO. It seems fairly simple in principle although I think tricky in practice (seals/emissions)
Damn, the Illestrator back at it again with the 10/10 video
Great content as usual, dude.
Good video thanks
Excellent. Simply excellent.
And I was thinking today I might want to sell my Wankle RX-8 in the spring. Another great video! I can see you are not wasting your new found free time.
Getting tired of the maintenance?
HA! No... I like working on Japanese machinery in that they go together relative straight forward. It is the gas and the smell of no cat and premix. It smells horrible! Talking of which ever look at a YSR50? Figure you could do another video about something that is or once was in the garage. Let's go 3 for 3! Great video!! Like always :)
@@Theillestrator1050
Great video! My dad had an rx-8, it was a really awesome car and the sound rotary engines makes is epic, but like you said in the video the oil these engines go through is insane.
I tried my best to avoid the low blow that is a bunch of apex seal jokes lol
Haha right, that and the amount of fuel these engines tend to burn through.
Perfect timing!
I got to see a Hercules at a vintage motorcycle meetup a couple months ago. shame the guy couldn't get it to start, but it was neat to look at!
Uploaded right when I’m about to drive to work *LETS GET IT*
Workin dat late shift!
Hell yea, we gotta get that cash
Love the voice over for norton
Seen these racing , with the original guys who raced them , from day one ,, in the uk about 10 yrs ago round Mallory park circuit ,, they were quick and made some serious unique sound. Cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Thank you again.
Nice video
Cool vid! I owned 3 original Mazda R-100's, 1970/1971. I made two go beyond 77k miles, one went to 110k before I screwed up and overheated it with an aftermarket fan kit. With those 10A engines, I just changed the oil religiously, kept the oil level up, and let it warm up slow in the morning. CORRECTION: The Mazda 4-rotor race car that won LeMans is a 787.
Amazing!
Great job once again! Love these videos. Can you do one on the vfr or v-four? Hahaha, I'm biased. Love my interceptor.
Good video dude. Plenty of good information without getting into the weeds and making it boring...
Quality vid
Nicely done video. I can live without rotary bikes but I MISS my 2 strokes!
I won't even lie to you, there was a period of time where I was looking at buying this pristine RD350 in the Bronx because it sat on craigslist for months. Really wanted a summer two stroke.
@@Theillestrator1050
THAT's the one to get. RZ even better. Unless you are in Canada. They got the 500s.
@@upsidedowndog1256 as a kid we had a green rd400 that was scary fast mid70s model than later I had 3 rz350's and half a dozen banshees...great memories...from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸
@@billallen4793
I got to ride an RZ350 one time and then the owner had a bad crash on it. I was going to bid on one at an auction many years later but it didn't run and the bidding started out over $1500.
@@upsidedowndog1256 they are incredible around town hooligan bikes had one black and yellow and two of the red/white I can't remember if they had a little bit of blue or not...I sold the last one in 91 or 92ish... no fun on the highway with semi's because you'd get blown all over the road because they were so light...I wish they would have made an rz using the fzr400 aluminum frame now that would be a great town/track bike...from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸
Very good video, technically spot on too, not easy to do.
Chief! You've got the touch! I love these types of videos... especially when you push them out. You could be an instructor, or teacher... put out 1hr, or 2hr instructional videos; and follow up with an in-class lecture. You've really got a knack for presenting the material in a way that's humorous, interesting and informative. If I could give your vids 10 thumbs up, I would!
Keep 'em coming!
Thank you thank you 😁, gotta keep everyone focused
@@Theillestrator1050
Just keep doing what you do, mate! Follow your heart! We love it. 🍺😋👍
I’ve seen a couple rotary Norton’s up close. They’re pretty cool.
Good video..
great vid 7 awesome commentary mate! my last bike was a worked ZX12R putting out 198hp at the wheel & i always wondered how a bike would be with a mazda 12A or 13B but as you say in your video, cooling is an issue.. noy to mention fuel burn.. after all, big HP means big fuel & big air =)
A rotor is a piston the instead of going up and down or sideways. It spin on a centric that produces about the same power of conventional piston engines.
this was great.
Thanks for watching!
I love ur vidz bro. Deadass b
MAKE YOUR OWN ALREADY
Great content, I didn't know about the heat issues. I had always wondered why the Wankle wasn't used for Auxiliary Power Units since the power/weight ratio was so high.
12:30 I know he's speaking English, but I can't understand a word of it. I guess there's English, and then there's "English" English.
You seem fun, without being obnoxious. Thanks.
Great video. I wanted that Norton so bad. I still have the sales brochure I got back around 1985. I had never seen any other pictures or video of it until now. Plus you woke me out of my RX-7 quad rotor compound turbocharged dream state. My fallback position is mountain bikes. "Cheap", fun, simple.
Not sure how you can be happy with mountain bikes after fast cars and motorcycles... Maybe add a bike motor kit, and gear it down to 20-25 MPH for maximum torque? :)
@@barking.dog.productions1777 It's kind of hard to put into words. Flying through a forest between the trees is really fun. And bikes now are incredible. My next build is $12k. 23 pounds of fun. Minimal risk. No DMV. No insurance. Quiet, simple. I spent so many years racing cars. I just sold my Porsche 928 GT. I wore out the roads.
@@Gkuljian Yeah, good quality bicycles are unbelievably expensive. Bike motor kits are around $200 for top of the line 4 stroke. That and a cheap MB from wally world would be a lot of fun ($100+) Ive got two that I am putting together now. One is a WWI military motorcycle replica for the street. When I want to get serious about off road I have the Honda XR250R.
@@barking.dog.productions1777 This has got me excited. I was going to link to their site, but it looks like over the last couple of days they've gone out of business. ua-cam.com/video/CTmuawNFp8Q/v-deo.html
Here we go baby
Aren't you supposed to say "first"? Lmao
Learn something new everyday.
I know this video is old but this is my first of yours and I love it... Quick question, have you heard of the Crighton CR700W?
Nice video! But didn´t you forget the Van Veen OCR 1000 !
Excellent video about rotary engines made even better by containing footage of a Kawasaki KX500!!!!!!
Somebody has done their homework. Nice job.
Also: GASOLINE AND BALLS
Without context, I just pictured balls slathered in gasoline and now I need an adult...
This video deserves 100k views at least...
Lets gooooo boii
Mr. Illestrator,
I have thoroughly enjoyed your documentary pieces since you've been making them. In fact, I pass over the riding videos (no offense) in order to see the more informative content. You have a nice way of intelligently and informatively conveying moto history. If only the UA-cam algorithm had a better way of defining your content. Perhaps a separate channel would be better for the documentaries. Just a thought.
Let me know if you'd like to go for a ride in the Spring.
I have a line on 500cc Norton rotary engines used in the first Predator UAV prototypes... Old machining teacher has 5 of them stashed away said he might sell one to me.
love the Vin diesel impersonation :)
Great video, really explains why rotary engines arent really a good fit for bikes
Si know a guy with 3 RE5's. He rides one every day and is doing complete restorations on the other two. He swears it's the best bike engine e vet made !
